TJke Wotxy Clinic Mildred has probably 2,000,000 other Americans in the same boat with her. And on her troubled "sea" she can visualize 2,000,000 diabetics in similar "boats," plus maybe 10.000,000 chronic arthritics, etc. But Mildred can also help reduce her attacks by the psychological therapy outlined below. By - George W. Crane, Ph. D., M.D. CASE L-516: Mildred R., aged 47, has a problem that bothers almost 2,000,000 other teen-agers and oldsters. "Dr. Crane," she began, "I have suffered from epilepsy ever since I was in high school. "My doctors tell me my case is petit mal, for I merely black out for a few seconds but don't fall to the floor in convulsions. "My latest doctor has put me on some new medicine, though I used phenobarbital for many years. "Now I break out in red welts all over my body, so is this due to the medical site effects of the new drug? "I also notice that undue excitement and tension seem to throw me into an attack. So how can 1 reduce the likelihood of a blackout?" ALLERGY AILMENTS The usual epileptic case is called "idiopathic". That means it seems to occur without any known organic irritation and thus is a spon taneous explosion of energy in the brain. But epilepsy is also regarded as being an allergy phenomenon and thus is a cousin of hay fever, migraine, eczema, asthma, etc. Our medical use of sedative or tranquilizer drugs is also predicated on the idea that if we can keep the brain's energy below that explosive level, then the patient will not blackout or have a grand mal convulsion. You epileptics need not feel unduly miserable because you happen to have an ailment that may hang on throughout most of your life. For it helps one's morale to realize that there are a lot of other people in the same boat. At present, we thus have probably 2,000,000 diabetics who must also stab themselves each morning with a needle to take a shot of insulin or swallow a tablet to keep their blood sugar level in the normal range. And millions of Americans suffer from arthritis, so they keep trying one drug after another to obtain relief. Millions of other Americans must likewise take digitalis for their hearts, or other drugs for their asthma, hay fever or anemia. In fact, console your ego by realizing that few people remain perfectly healthy all their lives. But epileptics now have The Law Serves You Illinois Law Not Like Texas In Handling Paternity Cases A U.S. Supreme court ruling concerning the rights of illegitimate children is not expected to affect Qlino^s Jaw and practice in paternity cases to any great extent, according to the Illinois State Bar association. The Supreme court recently reversed a Texas court decision which had ^excused "the biological fathCT" from any obligation to support his illegitimate offsprings Pointing out that Texas law requires natural fathers to support tt^eir legitimate children, the high court said that Texas could not constitutionally deprive illegitimate children of the benefits "accorded children generally" by the laws of that state. Under Illinois law, the ISBA said, there is no question that the father of an illegitimate child can be required to con tribute to the support of the child if his paternity is legally established by his own acknowledgment of it or by court action. The mother or other party acting on behalf of the child may file an action against the alleged father within two years of the child# birth or within two years of'the father's last written and sworn acknowledgment of paternity or oral acknowledgment in open court or within two years of a support payment made in accordance with such acknowledgment. Ordinarily, once an Illinois court determines paternity, a support order is entered which remains in effect until the child is 18 years old. If anything, the ISBA said, the Supreme court decision may tend to strengthen any demands which may be made under Illinois law, upon alleged fathers, for the care and sup port of their illegitimate children. The bar group noted that Illinois law makes parents liable for the support, care and welfare of their offspring and a divorced parent is sometimes required to pay the educational Lose Water Bloat with A Natural "Water Pill" NEW OORINIL.a natural "water pill" can help you lose excess weight, uncomfortable body bloat (puffiness in ankles, arms, stomach) due to excess water retention. 0DRINII is a mild diuretic compound-contains natural herbs in a tablet that is gentle and fast acting. The Supreme court observed in its opinion that the rights of the illegitimate child are meaningless unless paternity can be established. However, it said, the "lurking problems" of proving paternity must not be made "into an impenetrable barrier that works to shield other invidious discrimination" against the illegitimate child. The ISBA said the high court's ruling will affect any state which, like Texas, im poses a support obligation upon the father of a legitimate child without imposing the same responsibility upon the father of an illegitimate child. fl<( « ss t<. »;,an\ i.t'U drugs that are t < Ipf111. so the vast niaj<>rit\ can lead normal, happ\ lives. Occasionally, a new drug will cause some unpleasant medical side effects, as apparently is true in Mildred's case. In that event, we medics shift to a different medicine. Actually, it seems almost every new drug, regardless of how harmless it may be to most people, will cause allergic effects in some patients, for a few folks can't even tolerate a single aspirin tablet! In addition to drug aid to epileptics, we also urge psychological tranquilizers, such as the "Compliment Club," Bible reading and ac tivity in your neighborhood church. For such devices turn your attention outward and thus reduce your tendency to grow agitated about your "innards". Joining the "Compliment Club" also makes you more popular - and banishes undue shyness, as well as stage fright, thtife helping hold your brain tension below that explosive level. So send for the "Compliment Club" booklet, enclosing a long stamped, return envelope, plus 20 cents, and become a fullfledged member. (Always write to Dr. Crane in care of this newspaper, en closing a long stamped, ad dressed envelope and 20 cents to cover typing and printing costs when you send for one of His booklets.) Light Outdoor Living Room The same kipd of attention and skill you have always given to the lighting in > your living room should be applied, now, to another area of family life. Gardens, patios, and apart ment and tOwnhouse terraces are actually outdoor "living rooms" ... and the right kind of lighting is essential if they are going to be enjoyed to their fullest. The American Association of Nurserymen makes some suggestions for your lighting plants which may make you happier with the results of your efforts. The lighting fixtures must be designed for outside use, of course, with necessary weather protection built in, but <he wide variety of suitable materials available lets you be almost unlimited in your decorative plans. You will probably be best satisfied with the results if one or two lights are placed to shine down on the planted area you wish to feature, the nursery experts say, with a few more lights arranged low down in the borders. Perhaps another light may be placed in the branches or at the foot of a tree. You And Your Pet PAGE 1» - PLAIXDEALER - FRIDAY, AUGUST 17,1#73 By Raymond A. Minor, D.V.M. Manager of Veterinary Service Norden Laboratories When a dog begins frothing around the mouth, it usually triggers fear among people who are not familiar with a dog's ways. Frothing, unaccompanied by other disorders, generally is no cause for alarm. But you should understand the important relationship between frothing and fits. Frathing in itself is not an ailment. Motion sickness may bring it on - even a short car ride. Occasionally, frothing at the mouth may occur during teething of a young puppy or following administration of a bitter-tasting medicine. Close observation of the dog is best until the frothing has subsided. If the condition was triggered by a minor cause, the frothing should terminate on its own. Whatever the circumstances, it is best to consult your veterinarian for an accurate diagnosis and treatment. A word of caution: Frothing usually precedes a fit and carf be indicative of a serious disorder. If this is the case, you should let the dog alone until the fit has terminated, and consult your veterinarian af terward. Puppy fits are sometimes caused by normal teething or by worms. They may also result from fright or a sudden noise, from too much sun, from a lack of water and from faulty feeding. In several diseases, such as distemper, fits are almost always present. The fit may last for only a few moments. The dog will begin barking excitedly, stiffen and stare glassy-eyed. His jaws will clamp tight and sometimes he will cut his tongue ~ flecking blood upon the froth that is usually present. The dog may stagger and fall down while his legs will con tinue to push and pump. If the dog is unconscious or when the fit has subsided, The important point to keep in mind in setting the location of the lights is that you want to illuminate the gifts of nature which grow in and around your party place, or your place to play, or your quiet place out* doors. Keep in mind tha| nobody wants light shining ill "his eyes; keep the focus on th® trees and plants. Experiment until you're happy with the effect. One other suggestion--for your convenience: all the lights should be controlled by a single switch located at a spot that is handy for you, probably near the patio or garden door. The services of a good electrician to install the cables is a smart and inexpensive investment. You can also place him in a crate or box, making sure it is a place where he won't injure himself. When the dog regains con sciousness and is able to swallow, give him a sedative prescribed by your veterinarian. The fit, whether mild or severe, should be followed up by a complete physical checkup. Remember, the fit is not a disease itself; but it is a certain sign that something is wrong that needs immediate attention. It is a good practice, when taking your dog to the veterinarian for his regular vaccinations, to get ap propriate medication and have it on hand for such emergen cies. Dr. Minor regrets that he is unable to personally answer letters from pet owners. He suggests that readers consult their own veterinarians when their pets have problems. From The Farm SOYBEAN INSECTS Green Cloverworms can be found in some fields. These green worms with white stripes are the ones that spring by arching their bodies when disturbed. They also run very rapidly. They eat the soybean foliage. At present, most of these worms are small, but worms with the eggs of parasitic flies on their back are not common. A fungus disease that kills these worms will not be seen unless we havg a rainfall and high humidity. Normally, 6 worms per foot of row are considered damaging. We will reduce that to 3 to 4 this year. Hold plants over the middle of the row and shake them vigorously. Count the worms on the ground. If the beans are between early blossom and early pod fill, a loss of 40 to 5 percent of the leaf surface was economic at prices of a few years ago. Perhaps we can reduce that figure for 1973. If much foliage loss is occurring from insect feeding, you may want to apply carbaryl or malathion to control the leaf-feeding soybean insects, particularly if the beans are between early blossom and early pod fill. * TONS AND TONS - Literally thousands of pounds or performing pachyderms in a quick rehearsal of the long mount, popular feature of the Clyde Beatty-Cole Bros, circus coming to Crystal Lake on Sunday, Aug. 19, at Manor and Three Oaks road under the auspices of The Lake Region Y's Men's club.
