Market 1'lace Lay Institute Planned By Several Churches VI JOHN BENSON Approximately 150 people are expected to attend the McHenry Lay Institute for Evangelism held at the First Baptist church in McHenry from Oct. 24 through 28. The cost for the week of training covers admission to five lectures and five seminars and a complete manual for each one registered. The lec­ tures are designed to explain how one can experience a vital, meaningful Christian life. Communicating the Christian life effectively to others will be discussed in practical seminar sessions for men, women and youth. Fourteen pastors and laymen are sponsoring the Lay In­ stitute for Evangelism. John Benson of Wonder Lake, Executive committee chair­ man, is heading the planning committee. The Rev. Virgle L. Chappell, pastor of the First Baptist church of McHenry, is chairman of the pastors' committee. Other committee members are Vera Jones, Ozetta Campbell, Lester Thomas, Bret Jackson, Robert Fish, Alice Dominick, Ken Short, Kibby Benson, Lee Chappell and Kay Hensley. The following churches, to date, are planning to par­ ticipate; First Baptist of McHenry, Chain O Lakes Covenant, Calvary baptist of Woodstock, and the United Methodist of McHenry. The Lay division of Campus Crusade for Christ In­ ternational will conduct the Lay Institute for Evangelism, campus Crusade is an in- terdemoninational student and lay Christian movement. Thousands of church members have been trained in Lay Institutes for Evangelism in cities throughout this country and other countries in recent years. Bakalis said he has informed Illinois school districts of new guidelines his office will use to determine whether a school is operating sufficiently during a given day to qualify for state aid The new regulation was spurred primarily by confusion during the past several years among district officials over the effect of teacher strikes on state aid payments. The guidelines apply, however, to any situation which might cause a school to reduce its instructional programs. Bakalis said "the new definition of what constitutes a full instructional day for state aid purposes is fair not only to teachers and administrators, but is also fair to the taxpayer and especially the student." "It will also mean," he said, "that district officials will not have to operate in the dark for extended periods over the impact of a reduction of school services upon the state aid." Bakalis' guidelines specify that a school shall be considered in operation if at least 51 per cent of the students are in at­ tendance and instruction programs are being offered at all grade levels. The programs that are conducted must be adequate and meet in­ structional standards as set out in the state education office's recognition and supervision guidelines. If a school district fails to meet either of these two criteria, for whatever reason, it will be penalized one per cent of its annual state aid claim each day. The penalty is provided for by the state school code and the only exceptions are school closings which result from acts of God, as determined by the state superintendent. During school strikes and Other occasions which either force a school to close or to operate on a reduced basis, teams of professional evaluators from the state office visit schools to monitor programs. This year, Bakalis has promised he will notify districts of the findings of the visitation teams early enough to allow a district to make up for lost days by adding school days to its calendar. Chappell, Pastor First Baptist Church, McHenry SANCTIFYING A HOME To sanctify is "to be separate, to set apart" (Young's Analytical Concordance). Webster's Collegiate Dictionary adds, "to hallow, to impute sacredness". An interesting verse of scripture is found in the Apostle Paul's first letter to the Corinthians; "for the un­ believing husband is sanctified by the wife, and the unbelieving wife is sanctified by the husband; else were your children unclean; but now they are holy" (I Corinthians 7:14). This verse of scripture from the Bible refers to a situation where only one parent of a family is Christian. This verse expresses the privilege and responsibility of the believing partner. The believing parent is to "sanctify" the unbelieving mate. Notice, by definition of sanctify, that nothing on the earth is holy until it is made holy by God or man. Man himself sanctifies his church and his holy articles as he presents them to God. He who wishes to establish a place of worship, buys a piece of land, declares it holy, and builds an altar upon it. It is now dedicated and presented to God. The Apostle instructs the believing parent to present his unsaved mate to God. Rather than surrendering him to the world, he is to be claimed for Jesus Christ. Even though the non-believer may live an anti-Christian life, the believing partner is to continue "Sanc­ tifying" him and presenting him to God. It is believed by this pastor that a believing wife can claim her non-believing husband for Jesus Christ by continually in her heart, holding him before God. Of course, only the sanctified can sanctify. Only the obedient surrendered, holy believer can effectively sanctify his partner. The Bible says we are to "present our bodies a living sacrifice, holy acceptable unto God" (Romans 12:1). Weare to "sanctify the Lord God in our hearts ... (1 Peter 3:15). But we must remember, the Christian is already sanctified. (Romans 15:15; 1 Corinthians 1:2). "What know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which you have of God, but ye are not your own" (1 Corinthians 6:19). God says the believing partner is already sanctified. We should agree with Him and live a sanctified holy life. We are to live before the non-believing mate a life consistent with the Biblical teaching. We are to sanctify (present to God as already holy) the unbelieving mate. Agree that he belongs to God. Agree that God loves him. Pray for him. Peter almost promises that the unbelieving partner will become a believer. (1 Peter 3:1): "Wives, fit in with your husbands' plans; for then if they refuse to listen when you talk to them about the Lord, they will be won by your respectful, pure behavior. Your godly lives will speak to them better than any words " (Living Bible).
