c PUBLIC PULSE Plaindealer invites public to uae this col as an expression of views on subjects of neral interest in our munhy. Our only re- S%»st is that writers lim- It themselves t#> 300 words "or less - signature, full address and phone num- 1 'bar. we ask too, that one individual not write on the samd subject more than once each month. We re serve the right to delete any material which we ^ consider libelous or in ob- i jectional taste.) Announce Free Meal Policy In District 12 VOICES DISSENT 'To the Editor: <*"It was with sorrow and singer that I read on the front pfcge of Friday's (Sept. 7) Plaindealer of Clint Claypool's resignation from the High School board (District 156). It is Spoor commentary, indeed, on at least a part of our com munity, to think that an honorable man cannot execute his duties as he sees them without being subjected to personal ridicule. "As a school board member Clint has been a representative of me and the rest of this town and as such, in my opinion, should be both responsive and responsible to me and all McHenry citizens. Here within our community is a unit of government, not unlike our state or national government, v^herein each representative is elected in good faith and is charged with operating a multi- million dollar business with efficiency and common sense. Whether or not I always agree with my Senator or Congressman, I feel I have the right to tell him so, and, I ex pect him to be available and open to my comments. I feel the same way with my school board members. And, if my Representative is not in accord with his fellow Congressmen I expect him to have the courage to say so without having per sonal ridicule directed at him and his family and friends (Shades of Mafia and Hitler!). Again, my expectations are the same regarding school board members. "To lift a phrase from Clint's quote in the Plaindealer regarding money - "it's not out of your pocket" - I not only disagree, I contradict. Any money spent by the board comes out of my pocket and every other taxpayer's in our community. It doesn't grow on trees or filter through the air as tdust. Every taxpayer gives a fpart of his sweat to put the imoney in the hands of the board land, in turn, rightfully should texpect sound fiscal management of said money. "Although Clint may have felt like a voice crying out in the darkness for the past four and a half years I would fervently hope that he would give it much thought and consider running for the board again at the next election in Spring. Where there is no dissent can we really feel secure that our interests are being served? "Sincerely, "Elizabeth Nolan" FOOTBALL CONDUCT •.'Dear Editor: "Friday night football games ^gre truly a disgrace due to [Students' behavior during (games. It is true that the 'Majority of the students do go the games to watch, but still ,lhe minority is what hurts and U will always be so as long as 'games are being played at •flights. rijt "There are enough seats for .everybody. Every student admitted to the games must be made aware of this fact. The •School or school board must cfjass a regulation prohibiting parents from dropping off their &ids at the field without a (guardian or chaperone. This might sound ridiculous but something must be done to ^gyoid the embarrassment of ^bearing profanity and seeing uncalled for performances during the course of the game, ci "If we can't stop this type of thappening, then I suggest that < McHenry's football teams must play all their games in the afternoon. < "Bill Fuiava" Johnsburg School District 12 has announced a free meal policy for school children unable to pay ihe full price of meals served in schools under the National School Lunch program. Illinois statutes require all public schools to provide free lunches to children from families whose income is at or below the established guidelines. Local school of ficials have adopted the following family size-income criteria for use in determining eligibility: Family size, one, family income free meals, $2,740; two, 3,600, three, 4,460, four, 5,310; five, 6,100; six, 6,890; seven, 7,600; eight, 8,310; nine, 8,960; ten, 9,600; eleven, 10,240; twelve, 10,880 each additional family member 640. Children from families whose income is at or below those shown are eligible for free meals. In addition, families not meeting ^his criteria, but with other unusual expenses due to unusually high medical ex penses, shelter costs in excess of 30 per cent of income, special education expenses due to the mental or physical condition of a child, and diseaster or casualty losses are urged to apply. They may do so by filling in the application forms available at the nurse's office in each school. The information provided on the application will be confidential and will be used only for the purpose of deter mining eligibility. Applications may be submitted any time during the school year. Under the provision of the policy, the school nurse will review applications and determine eligibility. If a parent is dissatisfied with the ruling of the official, he may make a request either orally or in writing to Dr. D. Andreas, superintendent, whose address is 2117 W. Church St., McHenry, 111. 60050 for a hearing to appeal the decision. Hearing procedures are outlined in the policy. A complete copy of the policy is on file in each school and in the office of the superintendent, where it may be reviewed by any interested party. Scoff Holds Treasurer May Succeed Self Attorney General William J. Scott has held that county Treasurers, though elected under the old Illinois Con stitution, can now succeed themselves in office. Scott issued that official opinion to State's Attorney Randolph A. Comba of Bureau county. Here and There In Business Harlan Dam, 2813 Bay View lane, McHenry, has been ap pointed a member of the Civic Campaign committee of Commonwealth Edison com pany. The committee consists of a corps of employees who will conduct the annual Crusade of Mercy at all of the utility's generating stations, division headquarters and other installations during the month of September. Dam is co-chairman of the committee which will solicit pledges from fellow employes in the Nor thern division. Elect Officers, Announce Future Easter Seal Plans PAGE 20 - PLAINDEALER - FRIDAY, SEPTbivittL.. -- • Rally Day At Bible Church When St. Paul preached in Antioch, it was a thriving prosperous city of 400,000 people, known the world around. Now, it is a dusty, miserable village. Reason? Wars, earthquakes, floods and less aggressive people. ̂ Under the former Con stitution of 1870, Tresurers could not serve a second con secutive term. Scott advised, however, that the new Illinois Constitution contains no such prohibition and he noted: "It has been held that the adoption of a new Constitution repeals and supersedes all the provisions of the older Con stitution not continued in force by the new instrument . ." Mrs. Dolly Sterling of Crystal Lake was elected president of the McHenry County Easter Seal board at the annual dinner meeting at Crystal Lake Country club Saturday night. Mrs. Sterling, a long time member of the Easter Seal society, has been chairman and a member of the most active committees of the board and is a past president of Easter Seal auxiliary. She succeeds Ken neth Decker of Woodstock. Her assisting officers are David Booth, Crystal Lake; Dr. B.B. Neuchiller, Dr. John R. Tambone and John Eggum, Woodstock, all vice-presidents; Mrs. Margaret Kistler, Har vard, recording secretary; Mrs. Evelyn Fischer, Wood s t o c k , c o r r e s p o n d i n g secretary; and Ray Wolf, Woodstock, treasurer. Among chairmen and co- chairmen announced include Elmer Stange and Charles Peterson of McHenry. Mrs. Kay Button, president of Easter Seal auxiliary, presented a check to Kenneth Decker for $1,600 for use by the Easter Seal board. The check was from proceeds of a golf outing of which Mrs. John Eggum was chairman. Mrs. Button noted that an estimated $40,000 had been earned and turned over to the Board in nine years. She gave special thanks to Mrs. Chester Gould for organizing the auxiliary. She announced the re-sale of household items and clothing to be held at the village hall at Lake wood. Crystal Lake, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sept. 14 and from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sept. 15. James Gray, executive director of the state Easter Seal Society, at Springfield, an nounced the 1973 Easter Seal society of Illinois meeting at Ramada Inn, Elgin, Oct. 19 and 20. He emphasized that Chester Gould, creator of the Dick Tracy comic strip and his wife, Edna, of Woodstock will be honored guests at the State President's dinner meeting Oct. 19. A tour of the Woodstock Easter Seal Therapy Center in Woodstock will be included in the Oct. 19 meeting. This tour said Gray, will give Easter Seal people of the state an op portunity to see one of the "most active Easter Seal Therapy centers in the state, in operation, also the expansion of the building now in progress." Railroad Tracks To Be Improved Near Village Announcement was made Monday that new railroad tracks, ties and planks will be installed starting the week of S e p t . 1 7 , n e c e s s i t a t i n g t h e closing of McCullom Lake road. Through traffic will need to b£ re-routed for four or five days. Details of the improvement were given Township Highway C o m m i s s i o n e r C l a r e n c e Regner by R.R Ruch, road- master for the Chicago and Northwestern Transportation Co. The road district last week completed and blacktopped the approach to the crossing, raising the grade 3'* feet. This provides a safer crossing at the railroad tracks. McCullom Lake, from Rt. 31 to west of the village limits will receive a 2-inch matt surface of blacktop after the railroad crossing is completed. The contract for this project was let Aug. 21, awarded to Curran Contractors, low bid der.
