A cat's curiosity carnget him into trouble around the house. He may get shut in a dark closet or literally left out on the ijmb of a tree from which he can't get down. He may even get into trouble over such a simple seemingly harmless object as a child's toy. Toys made of rubber and polythene shaped to resemble snakes, Crabs, spiders, etc., will attract the interest of your cat. He might even succeed in eating the soft toy which could cause him to have digestive problems. Scratching to sharpen their claws is a basic instinct in cats, and you should accept the fact Jhat they will and must scratch. This does not mean, however, that you must resign yourself to having your furniture ruined. ; There are two things you can ido. First, if yours is an indoor cat, have his nails trimmed "regularly. Your veterinarian will show you how to do this •correctly with a professional jiail clipper. Outdoor cats, Should never have their claws clipped because they may need 4hem for self-defense. > Secondly, provide your cat >ith a scratching post. Whether its nails are clipped or not your •cat will still have this basic xlrive to sharpen its claws. So a Scratching post is a necessary ;and worthwhile investment. •There are many good ones on Ithe market - some equipped ,*with a catnip toy to entice your ^at. Or you may provide a log of "wood cut lengthwise and laid on ;the floor. After the bark is worn !off, you can upholster it with a ;piece of canvas. Whatever type •of scratching post you provide, :be sure it is heavy and long ^enough (or high enough) for the *cat to stretch out full length "while exercising. ; STRAY CATS (for adoption) ' Staying at 459-9426 are four I five week old kittens.
