(STAFF PHOTO-WAYNE GAYLORD) McHenry Girls Tennis Team In Losing Streak On Sept. 19, the McHenry girls hosted Libertyville under cloudy weather. Despite fine playing the McHenry girls lost 7-0. Then on Sept. 24, the McHenry girls again were the host team against Dundee under fair weather. Again despite fine playing they lost 7- 0 On Oct. 2, the experienced Waukegan girls hosted and beat McHenry by a score of 7-0. The McHenry girls then went to Crystal Lake. Fine playing by Dawn Ewald helped her in beating her opponent 8-5. But regardless of their fine playing, McHenry lost by a score of 6-1. On Wednesday, Oct. 10, a cold wind, a noisy band, and the Girls' Tennis team from Crown anxiously awaited the McHenry Girls. Beginning the meet was Dawn Ewald, a senior playing 1st singles. Also playing 1st doubles, Helen Ericksen and Carol Brynarski, 1-6, 1-6 and 2nd doubles, Calinda Leonard and Monica Kosta, 1-6, 2-6. However, Dawn was the only one who could chalk up a vic tory when she defeated her opponent 6-0, 6-1. This seemed to set the pace for the team. Steaming behind her, playing 2nd singles, was Brenda Ryan, a sophomore. Being evenly matched with her opponent, Brenda played a tireless game from sunlight to dusk. However, on account of darkness, the two were forced to play to 5 points because of a tie. The long battle ended up with Brenda on the losing end with 5-3 being the final score. Her effort and enthusiasm only encouraged the rest of the McHenry team. Showing good sportsmanship and skills were: 3rd singles: Joan Lingeman 0-8 3rd doubles: Liz Lang and Janet Owen 2-8 4th doubles. Karen Anderson and Virginia Wilsman 4-6 Unable to attend the meet was Vicki Bazan, Kathy Pohlman, Stephanie Pitel and Dianna Unger. Took a whole day off from work to tour into Wisconsin with the Winkels. Saw the sights at the Horicon Wild Game Refuge where Canada geese flew and honked their way in from the north by the thousands. In the distance it looked like clouds moving in. It's a sight to behold. Trees with their fall leaves were beautiful. Traffic was light and a peaceful air hovered over small towns where nobody seemed to be in a hurry. That's our speed! On the way home we stopped at Holy Hill where we prayed for the likes o' some (no names mentioned). Of course, we picked up a little nourishment along the way to keep up our strength. All in all a wonderful day. We've insured cars since grandpa's time So we've become pretty good at it. That's why we're one of Illinois' three largest auto insurers--with a reputation for fast settlement and rates you'll find hard to beat. Many adult drivers with good driving records can save 10% or more when they qualify with Country Mutual. And cut that by as much as 10% more by staying claims-free. Country Mutual--one of the Country Com panies. We're a little different than most insurance people. Skiing did not become popular in U.S. until the chair lift was developed. UPENDED WAR HAWK- Rick Freund (31) puts a good tackle on the North Chicago runner in the first quarter of the McHenry game against the North Chicago Warhawks. Although the McHenry defense was tough most of the time, lapses caused the Hawks to score and the McHenry offense was not able to come through. North Chicago won 13-2. (PL AINDE ALER PHOTO) North Chicago Defeats Then, home - and there's no place like home. On Friday, we had a visit from another old, tried and true friend - Harold "Zeke" Bacon. He and Charlotte are taking off for Tucson, Arizona. Our visit was all too short. But, old friends understand the unsaid words. Somebody's at it again. Received a letter thanking us for our order. Never heard of the firm. And never wear the product they are sending - pantyhose! Can't wait. It was a long sit, but we watched the final game of the World Series this Sunday af ternoon. As all the world knows, the Oakland Athletics put it all together in the final two games and won the big prize. The American League was superior. We like Yogi Berra and his Mets, but have no worry about them eating during the long winter. Forest tied for first place with 72 points apiece. The Warriors were the first team to have five men finish, but because of their high finishes managed only to tie for third. They however brought back four individual medals, more than any other school in the meet. Bill Santino as expected won the meet in record time over the Thunderbird Golf Course at Barrington in 14:33. Some people never learn live -- others, never live learn. By Dick Rabbitt The Warhawks of North Chicago handed the Warriors their fifth loss of the season Saturday by a score of 13 to 2. Again penalties at the wrong time proved costly to the Warriors. A 53 yd pass play was nullified by a penalty, and a 5 yd touchdown run was also nullified by a penalty. The offensive blocking was not as sharp as in previous games and as a result the Warriors couldn't get a sustained drive under way. The defense did an adequate job in holding Hanna, the fine Warhawk halfback, to 57 yds rushing in 13 carries. The Warriors kicked off to the Warhawks 33. After a first down, the Warriors dug in and forced N.C. to punt to the McHenry 23. Three plays resulted in 4 yds and the Warriors punted to N.C. 46. On the first play Bob Eppel recovered a N.C. fumble on the 49. Freund ran to the 41, but a penalty set the Warriors back. They punted to the 19, where the Warhawks started a march, picking up four first downs before being forced to kick. From the 27 McCafferty hit Klapperich with a halfback pass, and the speedster ran to the N.C. 20 before being knocked out of bounds. An offside penalty nullified this 53 yd play. Hanna intercepted a pass on the Warrior 23. But the locals dug in and held on the 15. McCafferty and Freund made a 1st down on the 26. Klapperich and Freund carried to the 43. Three incomplete passes forced the Warriors to punt to the 11. On the first play Bob Dobbertin tackled Jakatis for a safety and with 3:13 remaining in the half the Warriors led 2 to 0. Taking the kickoff Freund returned to midfield, but a penalty set the Warriors back Miiininiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiirriiiiiiiiiniiiiiiiitiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiirtiiimiiiiiiiiiiiiiiaiiiii CALL JOAN STULL 385-5418 DORIS ANDREAS 385-4518 % % % i * * * * * * } I KNOW YOUR AREA-ROYAL WELCOME DOES IT BEST ^ w 'Q % \P WML WELCOME K0ENEMANN Country Made Sausages, Hams and Bacon IGERMAN IMPORTS AND CHEESES I A. After the kickoff the Warriors tried 3 passes which all were incomplete as the half ended. During the early stages of the third period both teams ex changed punts. Midway in the period Tom Long recovered a N.C. fumble on the Warrior 35. George Hansen made 10 yds off tackle. This gain plus a 15 yd penalty on the Warhawks put the ball in N.C. territory. Freund went to the 22 for a 1st down. Then the big fullback bullied his way to the 10 for another 1st down. Randy McCafferty (who did a fine job for the injured Bob Staley) then hit Freund with a 10 yd T.D. pass. However, an pffside penalty nullified the score. Another penalty put the ball back on the 21 as the 3rd period ended. On the first play of the final quarter McCafferty's pass was intercepted. The Warriors held and forced N.C. to punt. Both teams had the ball several times without putting on a drive. Late in the game N.C. got the ball on the Warrior 42. A completed pass for a first down on the 27. Hanna went to the 16 for another first down. Barrett, the N.C. fullback, went to the 4, and with time running out Jakatis went in for the final score. His kick for the P.A.T. was good and N.C. won 13 to 2. The Warrior offense was not as good as it has been in previous games. They managed only 99 yds on the ground and 53 in the air, and lost 13 to 2. On the other hand they gained over 200 yds against Barrington last week and lost 46 to 0. This is what makes high school football a most interesting sport. You never know what is going to happen during a game. I'm sure that the fans who saw the game were disappointed in the outcome, but let's not get down on the team. Remember Friday night another big one here at home against the Cardunals from Dundee. Let's really get out and give these young gentlemen our support.
