S55555EBGJXX5xT^^^^5n5 Community Calendar PRIZE JACK-O-LANTERN ~ Teddy Fitipatrick, left, a patient at McHenry hospital, was the happy recipient of a prize-winning Halloween jack-o-lantern this week. Den mother, Mrs. Darlene Navarroli, and her 5-year-old daughter, Andrea, presented the pumpkin in the name of Den 5, Cub Scout Pack 162, which had won first prize for its entry at the Oct. 25 pack meeting. The boys who worked on the jack-o-lantern were Mike Bauml, Larry Kenyon, Mark Knaack, Brian Landis, Tony Navarroli and Bobby Schaeffer, all from McHenry. Pastor Concludes Fond Memories Of Travels (by Father Wm. O. Hanner) As we left the Sault Ste. Marie we changed our original plans to come home through lower Michigan and instead came back along the north shore of Lake Superior through Thunder bay. Thunder bay used to be the twin cities of Port Arthur and Fort William. From the Soo north, the road to Wawa (Wild Goose), runs through provincial and national Canadian parks. It is rich in beauty at any season of the year. There is one stretch of about fifty miles with no gas station. The north shore of the lake is the very oldest geological rock in the world. This section runs on into Quebec and the Laurentian mountains and hills. Geologists tell us this area is about 2 billion years old. No life of any form was on the earth at that time. Life had not even begun. Gigantic volcanos belched layers of lava so thick they sank beneath their own weight. Geologically this is how the basin of Lake Superior was formed. During the glacial and ice ages the ice blocked the exit of water from the lake and it was 550 feet deeper than it is today. The whole area is rich in minerals. Palisades mark a good many areas along the route so there are lots of waterfalls both in Canada and in the United States. After we got back into the U.S. we paused in the Sawtooth mountains along the shores of Lake Superior where the U.S. National Park service has marked roads through the woods where color is the best. We took time out to do the Moose trail over the old logging Heartbreak ridge. Beautiful it is, too. Beside the waterfalls and the leaves there are historical sights and sites. Old portages and forts abound. There are places where mines once were profitable. There are historical buildings. There are places where groups of people settled who came from a common land or area to the new West of the U.S. In Hurley, Wis., on the border between Michigan and Wisconsin, you can go into a bakery and get a pasty. The Welsh miners took them into the mine for lunch. They brought the idea to our land. A pasty is a piece of pie crust, generally round. They lay it flat, put meat and vegetables and seasoning in generous amounts, fold it over, crimp it and bake it. It comes out hot, juicy nourishing and delec table. We have often bought them for a picnic lunch around the Michigan-Wisconsin state line. It was at Hurley we stopped for breakfast. I tried to get something besides canned fruit juices. Remember when you could get freshly hulled orange juice (not frozen or canned). I asked for a half a grapefruit. This was in a major motel chain restaurant. My request sent the waitress off to the kitchen where a long whispered conversation ensued. After OPEN ALL NITE MON.thru FRI. 11 pm to 10 am starting Oct. 29th closed for lunches BREAKFAST served anytime -Featuring- Homemade Soups And Chili Special $150 Everynite * LAMPLIGHTER CAFE 3313 W. Elm St. awhile she returned and shyly announced - "We ain't got no grapefruit." All along the way home through Wisconsin there were ponds and lakes with clear, clear water. In them were reflections of blue sky and the color of the trees. No breath stirred. The forest floor and the wayside parks were carpeted with new fallen leaves. After Tomahawk we were back in mid-Wisconsin. It was also getting northern Ulinoisy again. Everywhere there are new junior colleges. We passed a whole technical institute with the proclaimed object that for a reason d'etre it educated for employment. Not a bad idea? Huh? When we travel I get so tired of roadhouses and restaurants that advertise steaks and chops and chicken. Mile after mile this is what is offered. The prices now are getting to be $5 to $7.50 for such fare. Too much. I was therefore delighted in Wausau to find a clean, fine restaurant, well known in its locality where we had lunch. It consisted of beef dumpling soup, baked beans (home baked), hot German potato salad with a sour sauce, really good weiners (with the baked beans), and stuffed sweet cabbage; lunch for two plus tip, $4.85. It is possible to use your imagination in a menu. Such an eating place famished travelers will seek out. When we know of such an act of heaven we get there early - I have, in previous articles, described such restaurants at the Soo in Canada, Meridian and Ocean Springs, Mississippi, Areola, 111., and there are some in our own state at Geneva, Galena, Port Byron and Canton. Well, folks, we are back home now for awhile and there will be no more articles for a bit. The Bishop has put me temporarily in charge of Belvidere. They are without a rector.
