It will hurt a little, but it's worth it. No matter how old we are, life requires cour age. And we show our greatest courage when we are terribly afraid but fight on through the fear. Moral courage is sometimes much harder than the physical kind, but whenever we stand up for what our God-given conscience tells us is right, regardless of sneering opposition, we win a shin ing victory . . . and we keep our self-respect. It is never too late to start living courageously. If you are facing a life situation that is draining your courage, why not pray about it in church tomorrow? The Christian Gospels assure us, without a shad ow of a doubt, that strength will be given us whenever we need it and as much as we need. Remem ber that life is not a lonely battle. MARGARET O'NEEL Clerk of the Court (Publ Oct. 19-26- Nov. 2„ 1973) /k > The Bible Speaks • Virgfe L. Chappell, Pastoi First Baptist Church, McHenry WHY DID THE HOLY SPIRIT COME? The disciples were sorrowful. They had great expectations concerning the Messiah. They had determined without a doubt that Jesus of Nazareth was that coming Messiah. The witness of John the Baptist, the witness of the miracles of Jesus himself, and the witness of the Father (John 5:31 ff) had convinced the disciples that Jesus was the One prophesied of in the Scriptures. But now he told them it was necessary for him to die and leave them. "Nevertheless I tell you the truth; It is expedient for you that I go away: for if I go not away, the Comforter will not come unto you; but if I depart, I will send him unto you. (John 16:7). Jesus Christ explained that the Comforter (Holy Spirit - see John 16:3) could come and indwell (John 14:16-17) within the believer only after Jesus had returned to the Father. We find the work of the Holy Spirit is to glorify Christ Jesus (John 16:14). "He shall Glorify me," said Jesus. One could not be indifferent to Jesus Christ and be indwelt by the Holy Spirit. An indication of the presence of the Holy Spirit within a person is his own attraction to Jesus and to the things of God. "He shall guide you into all truth," said Jesus of the Holy Spirit (John 16:13). Jesus had taught his disciples, "I am the truth" (John 14:6). "You shall know the truth and the truth shall make you free" (John 8:32). The revelation of Truth (Jesus Christ) to the individual by the Holy Spirit liberates that person and makes him free! New life is the gift of the Holy Spirit. Jesus said, "Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God" (John 3:5). After receiving the Holy Spirit, it is through His work that we are able to live the abundant life (John 10:10; Acts 1:8). It is im possible for the individual to live the abundant life in his own power. It is only as the Holy Spirit is allowed to take over in a person's life that he can even approach the full life which Jesus intended for him to have. "The Father will give the Holy Spirit to those who ask Him" (Luke 11:13). If the Holy Spirit is not indwelt within the individual he does not belong to Christ. (Romans 8:9). Just as we would ask our earthly fathers for good gifts, we are to ask our heavenly Father for the gift of His Holy Spirit. V. LEE CHAPPELL church's day care center finances. Chappell is married to the former Joanne Reed of McHenry and has two children.
