From The Farm PAGEJO-PLAINDEALER-WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 14, 1973 ' • ~ from wind and water erosion. The greatest danger of erosion occurs on soybean ground. Plowing soybean fields in the fall removes what little residue remains and increases the chances of wind and water erosion. To protect soybean-stubble fields, either delay all tillage until spring or just "rough up" the surface with a chisel plow. Chiselled soybean-stubble fields will resist wind and water erosion as long as the surface Q remains rough. However, in fields with three-percent slopes longer than 150 feet, it's best to chisel plow on the contour to minimize chances of water erosion. Fall plowing corn fields presents less risk, although a bare soil surface is more subject to erosion than one protected by corn stalks. 19*1.« I. As Ji^on°lctrc Clarence Burman, Crystal Lake, was our McHenry county cooperator in producing the University of Illinois soybean varieties in 1973. Here is the yield data from the Burman farm. Varieties are listed from the earliest variety to the latest. Chippewa 26.7 bushels per acre; Hark 30.0; Harosoy 63- 35.0; Beeson 29.2 and Williams 34.2 bushels per acre. The DeKalb experimental field soybean variety yields are not available at this time. FALL NITROGEN Deciding whether to apply nitrogen in the fall always involves weighing many fac tors. But this year-in the face of potential fertilizer shortages and possible higher prices next spring -- the decision is even more complicated. Harvest is progressing rapidly and -- unlike last year -- many farmers will have the opportunity to get anhydrous ammonia applied this fall. Farmers know that time will be at a premium next spring and whatever they can get done now will relieve the crush then. But they also know there are some good economic and en vironmental reasons for waiting until next spring to apply nitrogen. Both the economic and en vironmental considerations are based on the chance that at least part of the ammonia nitrogen applied this fall will be converted to the nitrate form that is soluble and subject to loss through leaching or de nitrification. Nitrogen that is lost may also contaminate underground and surface water supplies. That's why specialists recommend applying about 15 percent more nitrogen in the fall than the amount needed for spring or sidedress applications. MAKE EXTRA TIME COUNT Take advantage of good fall weather to get a head start on your 1974 cropping program. Don't go overboard on fall plowing. Be sure the time you gain isn't offset bv soil losses Tax Relief Deadline May Be Extended State Rep. Cal Skinner, Jr. (R-Crystal Lake) and J. David Jones (R-Springfield) in troduced House Bill 1 in the fifth special session called Thursday by Speaker W. Robert Blair and Senate President William Harris. The bill would extend the Nov. 15 filing deadline for property tax relief for senior citizens and for the disabled indefinitely. "It is not the intention of any state Legislator to cheat any senior citizen or disabled person out of property tax relief they have coming," Skinner said. "We realize that the process of communicating the availability of this relief has been imperfect, even though my office and that of Rep. Jones has processed hundreds of applications. "Thus far, only about $19 of the $29 million appropriated for the program has been distributed. For that reason, I am confident that our bill ex tending the deadline will pass," he said. The day the bill was in troduced, the House advanced it to the floor without reference to committee. Skinner and the House Revenue committee have also requested detailed information from the Department of Revenue on how much money it would cost to liberalize the Circuit Breaker Property Tax Relief program. An answer is expected in the near future. The program was proposed by former Governor Richard B. Ogilvie and applies to homeowners, renters and nursing home residents over 65 years of age and to those disabled according to Social Security. "Anyone who meets these qualifications and earns less than $10,000 a year from all sources should apply for relief," said Skinner. Applications for relief may be obtained from Skinner's office at No. 8 Crystal Lake Plaza, Crystal Lake. Newspapers; Magazines 9 A.M. - 5 P.M. A standard practice is to wash out the anhydrous ammonia before filling the tank with propane. Several cases of fish kills have been reported when wash water from an anhydrous ammonia tank got into a stream. It only takes three parts per million of NH3 to kill some fish. And a fish kill, no matter how few or what type of fish are killed, carries an automatic Q. My daughter was married in August. Can I still claim her as a dependent for 1973? fine if discovered. The best method of disposing of this wash water is to spray or sprinkle it back on the land. INCOME AVERAGING You should investigate the possibility of averaging in come, if your income in 1973 increased substantially over previous years. Income averaging is not automatic but must be elected by filing schedule G income tax form. Income averaging rules have been liberalized and more farmers now have an op portunity for cutting their taxes. You can use income averaging if your income for 1973 is at least $3,000 more than 120 percent of your average taxable income for the years 1969 through 1972. Your averagable income for 1973 can include net capital gains and the income from sale of items received by gift or bequest. These items were not allowed prior to 1970. A large sale of livestock, a farm, or in some cases, machinery, often causes a farmer's income to be sub stantially increased. A. Yes, under the following circumstances: 1) if she does not file a joint return with her husband for 1973; 2) if you furnish more than one-half of her total support for 1973; and 3) if she has gross income of less than $750 for the year. The $750 rule doesn't apply if she is under 19 at the end of the year or a full-time student during some part of each of five months of 1973. Q. Next January, I plan to give my nephew a new car as a wedding gift. The car is valued at more than $3,000, and I know I'll have to file a federal gift tax return. If I make the gift in January, will I have a whole year before I have to file a return? A. No. A federal gift tax re turn (Form 709) is due by the 15th day of the second month following the close of the cal endar quarter in which a gift is made. Thus, in the case of a gift made in January, Febru ary or March of 1974, a return is due by May 15, 1974. Q. Are there any limits on how much interest I can deduct on a loan to purchase investment property ? A. Yes, but the limitation generally would not affect the average taxpayer. For tax years beginning after 1971, there is a limit of $26,000 ($12,500 for married persons filing separate returns) on the deduction of interest paid on a loan to rnrchase or carry property held for investment, For more details, see IRS Pub lication 550, "Tax Information on Investment Income and Ex penses." It's available free from your nearest Internal Revenue office. Chopped ripe olives or sweet pickles blended with minced ham may be served in a mound on a lettuce leaf for an appetizer.
