Warrior Cagers Open Against DeKalb In King Kong Tourney Bonds are-for vacations. PAGE 9 - PLA1NPEALER-FR1DAY. NOVEMBER 16, 1973 SPORTS CORNER By Dick Rahbitt Coach Ken Ludwig's McHenry high Warriors open the season on Friday, Nov. 23 at 3 p.m. They will play DeKalb high school in the 11th annual King Kara tournament. Coach Ludwig is starting his 7th year at the helm of the Warriors. In that time his teams have won 68 and lost 74. The last four years his record has been 64 wins and 36 defeats. Last year the Warriors were 18 and 9, and finished in a 3rd place tie in the North Suburban. They took second in the Kankakee* Holiday Tourney, losing in the championship game to Bradley in three overtimes. They also won the Antioch Regional for the second year in a row. In talking with Coach Ludwig he says the teams assets are: 1. Lot of competition for starting positions. (10 to 12 boys) 2. Better than average shooting. 3. Better than average quickness, this should help with the pressure defense, which has been the key to recent Warrior success. 4. Good size, for once he has 7 boys over 6'2". 5. A winning tradition and good attitude. On the other hand he also lists some liabilities which are as follows: 1. Replacing All Conference and All Area players Mark Bentz and Roger Ludwig. Mark played football for Harper Jr., College, but is foregoing basketball. Roger is a possible starter at Olney Jr., College in Olney, 111., which took third place in the National Jr., College tournament last year. 2. Lack of experience, only 3 lettermen returning. 3. Better rebounding, which means more aggressiveness. 4. More team discipline in running patterns. Steve Himpelmann is the only returning regular let termen. He is definitely an All Conference candidate, and Coach Ludwig says "Steve should be one of the better guards in the area". Dan Camasta and Roger Wanta are the other lettermen, and they are also possible All Con ference selections. Steve Buss, Mike Cajthaml, Kerry Decker, and Dave Lawson, all seniors, have been impressive in the early workouts. Juniors who have looked good so far in the early pre-season practices are: Kenne Ludwig, Joe Meyer, Tom Stark, and Ron Stine. These boys played as sophomores last year on a team that won 9 and lost 14. However, they won 5 of their last 6 games. Steve Koerber -a 6'4" sophomore, also has looked impressive. Getting off to a good start will be one of the keys to a suc cessful season. Coach Ludwig thinks that the team will get better as the season progresses. He thinks that with the overall balance of the conference, the Warriors have a shot at the title. He lists Zion Benton, Libertyville, North Chicago, and Lake Forest along with the Warriors as the top teams in the conference.
