Home economists for Toot- sie Roll have developed some tempting new recipe ideas to please the most discriminat ing cookie lovers. When packed in an unusual con tainer that has been trim med with bits of ribbon and holly, Crispy Holiday Fruit Bars and Vanilla Sugar Stars become a special gift you'll be proud to give. CRISPY HOLIDAY FRUIT RARS l/2 stick (Vi cup) butter 4 cups miniature marsh-. mallows 1 cup Tootsie Rolls cut in Vfc-inch pieces 1 cup mixed candied fruits 8 cups crisp rice cereal l/2 cup candied cherries 1 cup candied pineapple pieces Melt butter and Tootsie Roll pieces in 3-quart sauce pan, stirring constantly. Add marshmallows and continue stirring until melted and syrupy. Stir in crisp rice cereal and the one cup mixed candied fruits. Toss until thoroughly coated. Press mixture into a well-buttered 13 x 11 inch pan. Chill until firm. Cut into squares. Lift out of pan with spatula. Deco rate each square with a poinsettia design using can died cherry for the flower center and candied pine apple pieces as petals. Yield: 24 to 30 bars. VANILLA SUGAR STARS 1 standard recipe for rolled vanilla sugar cookies OR 1 package of refrigerated dough sugar cookies V3 cup milk 2 tablespoons butter 3 large Tootsie Rolls (1^4-ounce size cut in %-inch pieces 3 to 3V& cups confectioners' sugar teaspoon vanilla Prepare cookie dough and cut with star cutters. Bake according to your recipe or package directions. Let cool on baking sheet, then re move to wire rack to cool thoroughly. In a two-quart sauce pan, melt Tootsie Rolls with milk and butter until smooth, stirring constantly. Remove from heat and gradually beat in confectioners' sugar until icing is stiff enough to be forced through a pastry bag and hold its shape. Use only enough sugar to get a stiff consistency. Using a pastry bag with icing points, decorate cookies with rosettes. Yield: 1 Vi cups frosting, enough to decorate 4 dozen Vanilla Sugar Stars. PARTY TIME Having a Christmas party for the children? Try baking cookies with little gum drops in them. A sure fire way to start any party. JEWELED ORNAMENTS Old jewelry such as gold chains, earrings, pins are ideal decorations for make- it-yourself Christmas orna ments. Plastic foam balls, covered with paper or mate rial can be decorated with the jewelry.
