It is being built to meet rapid growth in the Crystal Lake area, according to Edwards. He said the current Crystal Lake population of 16,000 is expected to grow to 30,000 in five years. A ratio of four beds per 1,000 people is considered adequate to serve the health needs of a community. f Exact location for the 100,000 square-foot facility has not been announced pending finalization of negotiatiens for 40 or more acres of land-land which is currently vacant. Approval for the project was given by the 19-membefr Sherman hospital board of managers which would manage the new facility as well as the Elgin hospital. Physicians on the medical staff at Crystal Lake would also be members of the medical staff at Sherman hospital. Harold W. Salmon, executive director said, "Hospital per sonnel totaling 250 would be hired to work at the Crystal Lake facility, while Elgin's Sherman hospital would maintain its personnel of 1,200. You may not have to use it --but it's nice to know you've got it. SCORPION STINGER *74 See-test ride-the '74 Stingers at ADAMS REPAIR SHOP 3102 N. CHAPEL HILL RD. McHENRY 385-0434 given its support for the project," Salmon said. Salmon said the Crystal Lake facility would have, in addition to the beds for short-term care, a clinical laboratory, operating rooms, an emergency depart ment, and maternity and pediatric nursing units. For such things as routine blood testing, open heart surgery, major trauma cases, and other major illness, Elgin's Sherman hospital would be used. "Such an arrangement will result in economy of operation and high quality patient care," Salmon said. The decision to move into Crystal Lake came upon request of the Crystal Lake Hospital association, made up of twenty members, and headed by David Blahnik, president. CLHA has been talking with Sherman hospital about such a plan since 1955, but expansion and im provements at the 420-bed Elgin facility caused Sherman hospital to hold off on the new hospital plans until this vear. The Sherman Hospital board of manager's resolution to become involved in the Crystal Lake hospital project set forth . a number of conditions, among which is the raising of at least $1.5 million by the people of Crystal Lake. This, the resolution savs, will go along with $400,000 in a trust fund held by the Home State bank of Crystal Lake earmarked for rf. Crystal Lake hospital. The remaining funds will be borrowed. Once the hospital becomes a reality, CLHA will have representatives appointed to the Sherman hospital board of managers. The agreement also calls for the Women's auxiliary of Sherman hospital to organize a Crystal Lake branch of the auxiliary. It further says CLHA has been asked to obtain an agreement with McHenry County college in Crystal Lake to establish an associate degree nursing program. Before the hospital can become a reality, approval from a number of organizations must be obtained. Simon said the project will be reviewed by the Fox Valley Hospital Planning council and the Comprehensive Health Planning Association for McHenry County. Next step is review by Operation Healh of Aurora and then the State Comprehensive Health Planning association. Finally, with the approval of the Illinois Licensing board, a temporary permit will be issued to begin initial phases of the project.
