Warriors 4th In King Kong Cage Tournament PAGE !l - PLAINDEALER-WEDNESDAY. NOVEMBER 28 . 1973 By Dick Rabbitt Coach Ken Ludwig's McHenry high Warriors opened their 1973-74 season by finishing 4th in the King Korn Tour nament held in Sycamore. Defeat DeKalb In Double Overtime In the first game the spunky Warriors rallied from a 11 point deficit to tie DeKalb in regulation time. The first three quarters of this game was a typical first game. Numerous mistakes were made on the part of both teams. Trailing 41 to 30 as the final period began the Warriors began to show some finesse. Putting on the famous "Warrior" press, they gradually crept up on the Barbs. Danny Camasta's free throw with seconds remaining put the game in overtime at 48 all. During the first overtime each team enjoyed a 2 pt lead, but as the horn sounded again they were tied up at 54 all. Iri the second overtime the Warriors were not to be denied. Koerber and Stark took charge and put McHenry ahead. However, the outcome was not finally decided until Steve Buss' clutch freethrow iced the game and the Warriors won 62 to 58. Lose To Kaneland In Semi-Finals On Saturday afternoon the Warriors lost to Kaneland 77 to 70. Starting out fast the Warriors, with Wanta, Koer ber, Buss and Himpelmann all hitting, they led 20 to 16 at the quarter. During the 2nd period Himpelmann's hot hand (he had 5 baskets) pushed the Warriors to a 43 to 30 halftime lead. With 3 minutes remaining in the 3rd period the Warriors led 57 to 40, and then the roof caved in on them. The Knights ran up 15 straight points to close the gap to 57 to 55 at the quarter. With some questionable calls by the of ficials, Kaneland was able to score 7 pts before the Warriors could get their hands on the ball. It makes you wonder sometimes about the of ficiating. In the 4th period Tom Healy, fine Kaneland guard, took charge and hit for 9 pts (he had 29 for the game) and kept the Knights ahead for a 77 to 70 win.
