Md., which is about a 40 minute drive from Washington, D C., where mother and daughter spent a lot of time sight-seeing. Rkhard Ktley To Play "Cervantes" At Auditorium On its way to Broadway, a new play, "Cervantes", written by Norman Corwin and starring Richard Kiley, makes a one-performance stop at the Auditorium theatre, Chicago, Saturday evening, Dec. 1. Though there have been many theatrical works built on or around Cervantes' immortal character, Don Quixote, one has dealt primarily with the life of the writer. For the first time on the stage, one meets Cer vantes in various stages of his checkered life. Richard Kiley, who had won a Tony award for his dual role of Don Quixote and Cervantes in "Man of LaMancha", was a Iftost logical choice for the leading role in "Cervantes". Indeed, there are those who say that Richard Kiley identifies with Cervantes and Quixote as RexHarrison identifies with Henry Higgins. Reliev ing the pain of dental work has progressed greatly since the No- vocainless days of early dentistry. Now. a new gadget has been cre ated to reduce patient apprehen sion even more. It's a gas ma chine that produces a feeling of well-being or euphoria. A loose-fitting mask is placed over the patient's nose, and a measured concentration of ni trous oxide and oxygen is admin istered to him. The patient re mains conscious while the dentist works on his teeth. He can keep his eyes open, if he wishes: ans wer the dentist's questions: and follow his instructions -- all with out feeling a twinge of pain. When the dental work is com pleted. pure oxygen is provided for three to five minutes to com pletely eliminate the nitrous ox ide from the lungs. Several million doses of the gas mixture have been adminis tered to patients of all ages, from senior citizens down to toddlers, and no deaths or dangerous com plications have been reported. As one dentist comments: "That's not gadgetry, that's pro gress." Brain pacemakers ... A 50- year-old man, unable to bend his knee since age three, recently walked for the first time without a cane. This victim of a spastic condition is the recipient of a "brain pacemaker," a battery- powered device that can allevi ate certain types of involuntary movement disorders. Developed by Irving S. Cooper, M.D., director of neurological sur gery at St. Barnabas Hospital for Chronic Disease, the Bronx, New York, the pacemaker produces its therapeutic effect by stimulating the cerebellum, the part of the brain that controls body move ment. An antenna implanted in the chest stimulates electrodes originating from a mesh plate lo cated inside the cerebellum. The wearer can turn the pacemaker on and off with a pocket size transmitter carried outside the body. In preliminary results on 12 patients with spastic conditions, Dr. Cooper reports that stimula tion of the brain by the pace maker has "lessened spasticity or reflex spasms" in seven of ten patients and has produced moder ate but incomplete relief of ex treme body tension in two others.
