With the talk of cutting back on heating this winter to con serve heating oil, many people are wondering how they can do their part and remain com fortable during the cold months ahead. Commonwealth Edison suggests using a humidifier to make you more' comfortable this winter. Just as humidity in summer makes you feel warmer, it relieves the too-dry feeling in winter and helps make you feel warmer with less heat from your furnace. Experts have long advocated the use of humidifiers during winter months to alleviate dry skin and other discomforts associated with the cold, dry air. With the use of a humidifier the heating system's ther mostat can be set lower and you'll still feel warmer in spite of the reduced temperature. The Association of Home Appliance Manufacturers has prepared a handy chart to help you determine how much moisture to add to your home. To use the guide; 1. Measure the square feet of space in the home or apartment 2. Determine if the structure is tightly insulated, normal or loosely constructed 3. Select the amount of moisture, in gallons per 24 hours, to be added, and 4. Check this figure against the AHAM-certified humidity output for over 100 models erf McHenry, speeding 60 in a 40 m.p.h. zone. The chart stresses the im portance of carefully deter mining the type of construction of the structure since more humidity is retained in a tightly construction building than in one which permits the entry of large amounts of cold, dry outdoor air. A tightly constructed home is one with good insulation and vapor barriers, tightly fitting storm doors and windows, and complete weatherstripping. Also, if there is a fireplace, it should be provided with a damper that can be closed when not in use. A tightly constructed home needs less humidity to maintain desired comfort levels. Loosely constructed homes are subject to frigid air in filtration due to the many openings in the windows and doors. These homes require more humidity to maintain required comfort levels. They also require more heat. Upgrading the quality of insulation will help in the conservation of heating oils this winter.
