Mt CHKfef IN peep... evert ROOM sew/ce an uNuejep NUM&ER. Last Thursday was the date of the 15th annual banquet of the Belvidere Pitch and Hit Club. A letter came from Fred Schulte, former big leaguer and the pride of Belvidere. This was an event we looked forward to attending with Joe Frett in the past. Now, Joe is gone and we didn't think of attending. It was a nice sur prise and sort of a tear jerker to think that our old friend's son, Wally, called to invite us. From the moment Dan Palmer pulled into our driveway until our return the whole evening was great. The guest speaker was Terry Forster, youthful but established left handed pitcher for the White Sox. Terry did real well and has a future in the banquet circuit as well as on the mound. Big, broad shouldered Terry, with a million dollar smile, is one of the finest young men we have ever met. There were stories, humor and good fellowship all the way. Roland Hemond, General Manager of the Sox, and Terry let it be known that the Sox will win the pennant AND the World Series in '74. So I Hear _SP0RTS EDITOR J Win Patriot Relays . •4nr|.< At this point we haven't read Dick Rabbitt's report on the Warrior basketball team victory over Grant high, but a 66-49 victory looks good for a starter. Must mark down Friday night to attend the game against Zion-Benton. The ball has started to bounce and fans will want to look at the current team in action. George Kinsala came over to our table to chat at the McHenry Country Club the other night and was in a happy mood. As always. George was entranced with the fireplace, decorations and general atmosphere as he dined. We both agreed there is nothing like a wood-burning fireplace. But, you can't have everything. . ' George was a trophy winnner way back when at the local club, a natural athlete and all around guy. He likes to come home to McHenry. Doesn't everybody? The time isn't here, but the list is out and McHenry is shown as one of the 1974 Class AA basketball tournament centers. By Dick Rabbitt Coach Mike Shanahan's fast improving McHenry High swimmers won the Annual Patriot Relays last Friday night at Stevenson High School. It has been a long hard struggle the past several years, but patience and hard work has finally paid off for the coaches and the team. This is the first trophy ever won by the swimming team, and you can bet now that they have the taste of victory it won't be the last one they will put in the trophy case. In the 9 events the Warriors won 4 and placed 2nd in two. The 200 yd Free Style Relay team of Randy Watkins, Randy Elvera Justen is sure that spring is here. She has for- sythias in blossom. She saw a robin. Saw a man wearing a straw hat. And, she swatted a mosquito. It will take a lot of those white flakes out of the sky to convince Elvera that spring hasn't arrived. Kinda late Sunday night, but we just squeezed in the West Campus auditorium for the McHenry Choral Club annual Christmas program. Great local talent again this year. The stage, decoration and costumes were, truly outstanding. We used to argue with Director Adele (Our Brenda) because the program was too long some years in the past. Our comment this year when she sold us tickets was, "Our trouble is - we like it better each year." STARK SCORES TWO- Junior Forward Tom Stark scores two of his total of 13 points as McHenry beat Grant last Friday night 66-49. In the first regular season game, the Warriors see-sawed back and forth with the Grant Bulldogs of Fox Lake. In the final quarter, the Warriors pulled away from Grant and went on to win by 15 points. High scorer for the night was Ben Himpelmann, scoring 31 points, most of them coming in a hot second half. The Warriors open the home season this Friday at West Campus against Zion-Benton. (PL AINDE ALER PHOTO) SPORTS Warrior's 4th Quarter Spurt Beats Grant Five 66 to 49 By Dick Rabbitt Putting together a tenacious defense and 17 pts by Steve Himpelmann during the 4th period last Friday evening enabled the Warriors to defeat Grant 66 to 49. That along with a 7 minute rhubarb, let everyone forget that it was a nip and tuck game for three periods with Grant leading 42 to 40 going into the final quarter. Himpelmann wound up with 31 pts for the game's high scorer. The game started out slow with neither team being able to hit the basket. Midway in the period Wanta got the locals on the scoreboard, but they trailed 14 to 10 at the quarter. With 6:10 remaining in the second quarter Steve Buss' basket put the Warriors ahead for the first time. It was short lived however, as Grant Scored seconds later to regain the lead. The Warriors managed to close the gap to 1 at halftime, trailing 26 to 25. During the third period the teams matched baskets for the entire quarter, with Him pelmann warming up for his final push, by hitting 5 for 5 during the period for 10 pts. With 6:15 remaining in the game Himpelmann's 15 footer put the Warriors ahead to stay. RHUBARB CONFUSES FANS With 4:40 remaining, Stark was fouled by a Grant player. This was followed by a technical foul being called on the Grant player. Following a timeout, Himpelmann shot the free throws, and when it was determined that Stark was the player fouled, the rhubarb followed. Both coaches, of ficials and players were gathered around the scorer's bench to determine what was to take place. The result was, which is the rule, Himpelmann was assessed a technical foul for shooting Stark's free throws. Stark missed his two, Himpelmann made the free throw on the Grant technical, and Marsh countered a free throw on Himpelmann's technical. With order restored the Warriors, leading 51 to 45, put on their famous man to man full court press. So effective was this press that 4 times Grant couldn't get the ball in play in the allotted 5 seconds. ATHLETES AWAY Three Beloit college cross country runners received honors following the close of the season. Most Valuable Runner Award went to Sean Hartnett of Brookfield, who turned in the best five-mile time for the season with a 26:12, and Alex Thomas of McHenry, 111., whose four-mile time of 20:42 was the season's best. Alex, Class of 1977, is the son of Mr. and Mrs. WilliaAi Thomas of 710 Center street. Hartnett also shared the Most Improved Atfard with Brent MacDermot 7of Beloit. I I --M---- With Himpelmann's hot shooting and the rebounding of Stark, Koerber, and Decker, who replaced Wanta who had fouled out, the Warriors ex tended their lead to a final 66 to 49 win. The Warriors showed a lot of improvement. Sophomore Steve Koefber handles himself real well and should get each game. Stark and Wt showed better rebounding strength, the ball handling of Steve Buss and Danny Camasta kept the offense going, and the sensational shooting of <{5teve Himpelmann in the second half was really something, jfeld to 4 in the first half, the senior guard hit for 27 in the second half, 17 of them in the last period. Kerry Decker and Dave Lawson, although they didn't score, did a fine job in the all important defense and rebounding. This week the Warriors will have their work cut out for them. They host the ZeeBees Friday night, and the word is out that Zion is the team to beat in the North Suburban this year.
