It was the final score of the game as the Warriors captured the victory in the conference opener against the strong Zee-Bees. The win also gives the Warriors a tie for first place honors in the North Suburban Conference. Friday the team travels to Lake Forest and Saturday home game against Antioch. When Zion went ahead 69-68 there were only 11 seconds left on the clock if we didn't lose count in the excitement. Then Roger Wanta was fouled and up to the line where he sank his first shot. The visitors called time out. With time back in, Roger sank his second shot for a 70-69 lead. But, the game wasn't over! Zion's Mack sank a shot as the game ended, but McHenry had won by a mere whisker. The ref had signalled at the buzzer. Make no mistake. The Zeebees are one heckuva good team. They will be in the thick of the race. They have size, speed and balance. The home team outscored Zion 18-11 from the free throw line. Those 1-pointers win a lot of ball games. We imagine the films on the game will be given a good look this week. Our boys nearly gave the game away in the last three minutes. A few earlier mistakes will also get attention. There was bedlam as the game ended. It was a great win for Coach Ken Ludwig, his able assistant El Partenheimer, the team and the crowd. That kind of basketball should pack the gym this season. Congratulations, fellows. You showed conditioning, spirit and the will to win. Met "Bobby" May Saturday morning and she asked, "Where were YOU last night?" We wuz there. Up in the balcony with our star reporter and now famous cheerleader, Dick Rabbitt. When things looked bad near the end, Djtk stood up and led the students in a resounding cheer thatfmust have reached the boys *>n the floor. Not many sport's fans have seen more basketball games than "Bobby". Of course, she doesn't get excited. Not much. We get so many ads from places who offer a weekend of horseback riding, swimming, golf, hikes, skiing and tennis. The next one will get our pic ture in return. That should get our name off the list. City Sights -- "Torchy" Krause and Harry Dean heading down Green St., for their morning coffee. You can tell which one is "Torchy". He wears a cap. By Dick Rabbitt Someone forgot to tell Coach Ludwig and his Warrior's that they were playing the top rated team in the area last Friday night. The supposed to lay down, play dead lads from McHenry, arose to the occasion and defeated the mighty ZeeBees 70 to 69. They jumped off to a quick 6 to 0 lead and extended it to a 24- 12 first quarter advantage, and then hung on for the victory. Steve Himplemann's 12 pts. in the quarter matched the entire output of the ZeeBees. This was a good Zion ball club, with 4 regulars back from last year's team that lost to New Trier East in the Sec tional. But they were outhustled, outplayed and outcoached by a determined bunch of Warriors and their coaching staff. Tom Stark got the locals on the board real quick, and with Himplemann and Koerber following suit, the Warriors were off and running. With 2 minutes remaining in the period the Warriors had a 22 to 8 advantage, but the ZeeBees closed the gap to a 24 to 12 first quarter ending that left Warrior fans spellbound. During the second period the teams matched baskets and the Warriors led at the intermission 38 to 28. Steve Buss, senior guard for the Warriors, did an excellent job of guarding Brian Colbert during the first two periods. Colbert, the leading scorer with a 30 pt. average, was held to 1 basket by Buss in the first 16 minutes. CLOSE THE GAP - In the third period the ZeeBees began to close the gap, the rebounding with the bigger foes began to make its toll and the score going into the final quarter was 56 to 50 with the Warriors still on top. The final 8 minutes was as fine as basketball as you will see anywhere. The Warriors extended their lead to 61 to 50 with 5:45 remaining and even went ahead 62 to 51 with 5:30 left Then Colbert got hot and hit a few from about 15 feet, and with 1:57 remaining the Warriors led by 1, 64 to 63. The Warriors hit a cold streak, but the ZeeBees in their zest to gain control of the ball fouled. With 23 seconds remaining the ZeeBees went ahead for the first time in the game 69 to 68. Doug Hiaat sank two free throws that put them ahead. Not to be denied however the Warriors roared back, setting the play up for the last shot. With 11 seconds remaining Roger Wanta was fouled. He calmly dropped in the first free throw to tie the game at 69 all. Zion called timeout, this was of course to give Roger time to think about his next free throw. He did just that and again dropped the ball through the net for the lead. Zion came down the floor and had a couple There is talk of bringing back the two dollar bill. You are getting in the big leagues. of shots, but the horn sounded just before Mack's shot went in, and the Warriors came away with a big win. NO UPSET It was a big win for the Warriors. You will never convince them that it was an upset. Coach Ludwig had nothing but praise for his gutty bunch of Warriors. In a hoarse whisper in the locker room he told his squad "Back of my mind I knew we could win". The shooting of Himplemann was again outstanding. He woundup with a game high of 26 pts. Tom Stark did a great job on the boards, and chipped in with 17 pts. Roger Wanta played his best game of the season, and looks as if he has his confidence back to really help the team. Steve Buss's defense, and his ball handling with Himplemann to break the Zion press was a big factor. Steve Koerber, the young sophomore who improves with every game. The maneuver by Coach Ludwig to put Koerber guarding Danny Mack Zion's big center was a deciding factor. In talking with Coach Moe Tharp after the game, he had nothing but praise for McHenry. He stated "maybe we were too overconfident, and we were surely out played." He also chipped in with this remark "I didn't think Ludwig would put a sophomore to guard Mack". All I can say to this is to Coach Tharp, "when ydu play the Warriors anything can happen". Dan Camasta chipped in with 2 pts., and Kerry Decker's two free throws came at the right time. And what about that Warrior cheering section. The rafters were shaking all night. The cheerleaders and Warrior fans have to take a bow for the spirit shown last Friday night. It's a double header weekend coming up. Lake Forest there on Friday, and back here at Buckner gym on Saturday 1L will be Antioch. The scores were 89 to 83. Lack of depth again proved the downfall of the swimmers. Due to a new ruling this year teams can enter more in dividuals, and more than one relay team.
