Jim Morris remained as chief of the squad while Steve Johnson of Island Lake is the assistant chief. George (Bob) Wilson was elected captain and the members voted Sharon Hunt of Griswold Lake Hills the secretary of the squad. There are twenty active members in the Lake Region Rescue Squad. The members from Holiday Hills are Roger Thietje, Bill Abbink, Joe Maras, and Bob and Carol Wilson, each of these folks passed a course on rescue procedures and first aid. So far everything has been run ning smoothly for the Rescue squad and ipembers are hopeful that the situation will continue. These folks spend many hours cleaning and maintaining the equipment, besides their rescue duties. We are all grateful for their dedication to this needed community service. BIRTHDAY PARTY Linda Thietje had a very busy October and November with all the birthday parties in her family. Linda's daughter, Karen, celebrated her ninth birthday on Nov. 4. It was an exciting affair since Karen invited many of her friends to help her celebrate. She received many nice gifts from her guests, who were; Michelle Campbell, Gina Tannert, Debby and Julie Bartkus, Laura and Lynn Kathan, Ann Stackhouse, Beth Siattia, Kim Hamilton, Suzy Bielsky, Diana Owgg, Debby Wiles, Gina Koeppen, Sherry Hill, and Val pnf° The party was huge success, as the girls played games, listened to records, and devoured cake and ice cream. Linda would like to thank Val Tannert and Kim Kathan for their help in ensuring the party a success. VACATION TRIP Our family just returned from two weeks in sunny Arizona. Only the sun forgot to shine most of the time plus it rained. We didn't let the weather hamper our activities though. We drove the scenic route, through the Rockies. As misfortune layed in our path, we were unabie to secure a motel room after the first day's driving until we traveled eighty miles further than we had planned. Being late November, we felt there should be an abundance of motel rooms available. Unfortunately for us, we arrived in Colorado the night before hunting season began and every motel within an eighty mile radius was filled. There is nothing more magnificient than the early morning sighting of the Rocky mountains! We drove through Colorado Springs at sunrise, and the mountains came alive with color at the first crack of dawn. This being our first trip to Colorado, took the scenic route straight through the mountains. We were extremely fortunate in that the weather was clear and crisp for the entire drive. We stopped at the Royal Gorge bridge, which is the highest bridge in the world. It's mainly a tourist attraction as it spans the Arkansas River some 1000 ft. below. Someday we'll have to take the Santa Fe train from Denver to Seattle, as ̂ our ̂ fabulous I* SALE! Route 120 McHenm, Illinois that train travels through the gorge. Without a doubt Colorado is one of the most beautiful states in this country. Naturally, the only snow we encountered was in Arizona. We had to drive through one of the season's worst storms in Flagstaff. We finally arrived in Phoenix for a two week visit with my mother, Mary Eatherly, and my sister, Cathy, arid her husband, Skeet Winthrop. My sister surprized us by delivering her first baby a month premature. The baby, a girl, whom they named, Kai, was born Nov. 19, the day we arrived in Phoenix. Little Kai only weighed in at 4 lbs. 7 oz. so we had to wait for over a week before we were able to see her. We<planned several side trips to visit friends in Phoenix and all over Arizona, but the cold rainy weather and the energy crisis curtailed much of our activities. Instead we spent most of the time catching up on the three years it had been since our last visit. We did manage a trip to Old Tucson, which is strictly a Hollywood type western town constructed for movie making. It's fun to visit, especially for the kids, since the Old Tucson players perform a shoot-out for their dally audiences. The same day we drove down to Mexico to do some bargain shopping. Two days before time to return home the weather broke and Arizona's sun again ap peared and the warmth returned. We had a wonderful time, as always, but vacations are always too short and the drive home too long.
