(STAFF PHOTO-WAYNE GAYLORD) SPORTS Listening to WKRS, we heard an ad referring to "Beautiful Downtown Volo". Volo was beautiful to an Old Timer like us when they had a blacksmith shop, Ed Lusk's grocery store and Joe Lenzen's garage. Real small town at mosphere. We love those Christmas cards--sit down and read them with care and enjoyment. Anybody seen Arnold Rauen? Which reminds us -- all those parties have caused us to miss Lawrence Welk two weeks in a row. (Eddie Bimbo, who is a changed man since Santo went South, turned on the Welk show for us Sunday night as Dick Wimmer treated us to a holiday "Butterfly"). Leo Heimer feeds aquirrels. Coach Ludwig has his team off to a good start. Thanks to an invitation from EARL| WALSH So I Hear SPORTS EDITORJ Mary Ann Wiles, we sepnt an enjoyable Saturday night at the McHenry Viscounts Award Banquet at the American Legion Home. Had no idea that banquet would be so well attended. Mothers, fathers, boys, girls and many interested persons were there for a good time-- and one heckeva good meal. Those gals know how. One of the best tests of a good cook is the gravy she (or he) can make. This was tops. Manager John Schujtz did a bang-up job as MC for the program. Said he was nervous. We don't believe it. He slides those little remarks in real good. Watching and listening to that group of young people and seeing the interest their parents show gives one extra pride and confidence in our community. It is commendable to see men and women taking an interest in activities of young people, teaching and leading the way. We congratulate them and appreciate their efforts. Now we hear that Antioch clobbered our Warrior basketball team Saturday night in a non-conference game. The time has come to start a new winning streak. At Lake Forest Friday night the Warriors started off slow, letting the Scouts jump off to a quick 6 to 0 lead. But with Stark, Koerber and Wanta getting baskets the Warriors battled back and led at the quarter 16 to 14. With Buss and Himpelmann directing the attack the Warriors managed to stay ahead and the Warriors led at the intermission 30 to 24. In the third period the Warrior's press proved to be the downfall of the Scouts. Numerous turnovers by the Scouts led the Warriors to in crease their lead to 40 to 30 at the end of the period. During the final stanza both teams had 16 pts and the Warriors won their second conference game 56 to 46. The win enables them to share the lead with Liber tyville, each with a 2 and 0 record. Defense and good shooting were the key to the Warrior victory. They shot 49 percent from the field, and forced the Scouts into 20 turnovers. The press was most effective, and kept Lake Forest off balance most of the evening. During the first half the Warriors, after again trailing 6 to 0 and 10 to 2, regained their composure and forged ahead 18 to 15 at the end of the first period. Midway in the second quarter the Warriors led 29 to 20, but just couldn't seem to put the Sequoits away, but did manage to lead at the half 31 to 25. During the first half the Warriors were tough on defense and their rebounding was helped by the outstanding play of sophomore Steve Koerber. During the early stages of the third period the Warriors in creased their lead to 37 to 29, but then Stark left the game with 4 fouls. With Stark resting on the bench, the Warrior's hope sagged, as Antioch began to control the boards and finally went ahead 45 to 43 at the buzzer. The last period was all An tioch, the Warrior defense time and time again gave Andrews easy shots, and the taller Sequoits really began to dominate the game and won going away 73 to 59. The Warriors were beaten by a good ball club. The hard fought game of Friday night took its toll on the Warriors. They just couldn't battle the bigger Antioch team for four quarters. With Stark on the bench with foul trouble, the Warriors just couldn't seem to rebound. Well next Friday Crown comes to town for another important North Suburban Conference game. Hope to see all you fans at the game.
