In addition, two ruling elders, Keith Durkin and Orval Lucier, were re-installed to another term of service. This is the first time, and probably the only time , in Reverend Mclntyre's ministry, that he has had an opportunity to or dain such a large number of elders. The explanation behind this event is that the church has combined the Board of Deacons with the Session to form a Unicameral board. This means that the church is governed by one larger body rather than two separate boards. This is ex pected to facilitate better POET'S CORNER THE CHRISTMAS SPIRIT Some say the Christmas Spirit is lacking, And commercialism has taken its place. That idea has little backing, As long as there's a human race. Families still gather together. Many miles do not hold them apart. The love and warmth of earlier years Is renewed within the heart. At Christmas more people are generous. They give without thought of reward. A feeling of brotherhood floods the soul, And faith in God is restored. Hearts open wide to the needy. Goodies are gladly shared. Kind thoughts for the poor and lonely Shows them that somebody cared. Christmas is a time of magic. 'Tis heard in the tinkle of bells. In the children's happy voices The Spirit of Christmas dwells. The birth of the infant Jesus Makes the Christmas Spirit true. The magic of H» great love ^ •• Brings the Christmas Spirit anew. Faith Presbyterian church is the first Presbyterian church in Illinois to change to this type of organization; however, it has been shown to be successful in other states. During the ordination, the Rev. Mclntyre was assisted by Don Henderlong, one of the current ruling elders. It is also notable, and unusual, that the new board consists of six women and three teen-agers- two groups commonly ignored by the church. Following the impressive ceremony, the United Presbyterian Women served refreshments at a reception for the new elders and the entire congregation. The Bible Speaks Virgje L. Chappell, Pastoi First Baptist Church, McHenry NEEDED GIFTS Most of us will be faced with the difficult decision of what to do with Christmas gifts which we neither wanted nor needed. This is a sad situation considering there are those who would seek only those ^ery needed things for Christmas. Most of the older generation can remember when their Christmas consisted almost entirely of receiving needed clothing or similar necessities of life. There are probably more families of this group in our community today than we realize. Jesus said, "Don't worry about things - food, drink and clothes. For you already have life and a body - and they are far more im portant than what you eat and wear. Look at the birds! They don't worry about what to eat - they don't need to sow or reap or store up food - for your heavenly Father feeds them. And you are far more valuable to him than they are" (Matthew 6:25-26 LB). A word of encouragement to those who seek necessities of life for their families for Christmas, is that Jesus Christ promised He would meet the needs of those who belong to Him. In fact, the Biblical teaching is that more than basic needs will be provided to those who are faithful to Him. The Psalmist observed, "Even strong young lions sometimes go hungry, but those of us who reverence the Lord will never lack any good thing" (Psalm 34:10 LB) Is it possible that one can place confidence in the provision of the Lord? We may believe God's love is upon our friend or neighbor and therefore His provision also, but this is often difficult to believe concerning ourselves. Again, the Psalmist states in confidence and personal observation that God will provide for all who place their faith in Him. "I have been young and now I am old. And in all my years, I have never seen the Lord forsake a man who loves him; nor have I seen the children of the godly go hungry. Instead, the godly are able to be generous with their gifts and loans to others, and their children are a blessing' (Psalm 37:25-26 LB). Perhaps the most disheartening thing to God about human beings is their blind acceptance of His blessings and selfish ingratitude. It is so easy to receive what comes our way with at titudes which must grieve the Lord. Attitudes of "luck", "I ear ned," "I deserved," and the like are hardly in keeping with the Biblical teaching. "But whatever is good and perfect comes to us from God, the Creator of all light, and he shines forever without change or shadow" (James 1:17 LB). Why not ask God for what we need, give thanks to God for what we receive, and have confidence that God, in His Unique Person, cares for me. "If you will humble yourselves under the mighty hand of God, in his good time He will lift you up. Let Him have all your worries and cares, for He is always thinking about you and watching everything that concerns you" (I Peter 5:6 LB). S. L. RUGGER0, M.D., S.C.
