Formerly, many people either had to write to the Internal Revenue Service for help, pay for a long-distance call or travel to their local Internal Revenue office. Under the new system, everyone's telephone is now linked, toll free, to a staff of trained tax experts. For Northern Illinois residents the number to call depends on where you live. If you live in the city of Chicago the number to call is 435-1040. If you live outside the city limits of Chicago and your telephone area code is 312 the nuYnber to call is 800-972-5400. If your telephone area code is 815 and your phone number would be listed in the Joliet Region telephone directory the number to call is also 800-972- 5400. All other Northern Illinois residents in telephone area codes 815 and 309 should dial 800-252-2921. Mr. Beck advised taxpayers in order to get the most benefit from their call they should prepare their questions in advance, have reference papers nearby the phone and have a pencil and paper handy. THE LAW SERVES YOU Beer, Wine And Jury Duty For Today's Youth Young men and women now have two new privileges and responsibilities thanks to state 1 legislators during last year's session of the Illinois General Assembly. Eighteen, 19 and 20-year-old residents are eligible for jury duty for the first time in Illinois Following a period as manager of the clothlqg department of Montg Ward and a stint with the Army, Mann returned to B< and Stovall in June, 1970. A graduate of McHenry high school, Mann moved to Woodstock in the same year that he married the former Penny Jensen of Woodstock, in 1965, and now resides there with his family. .fjVL Born and raised in Marengo ,f and a graduate of Marengo j high school, McNeese served, with the U.S. Air Force and came to the Woodstock store m 'i ril 1968 -au.lt McNeese moved to Wood- . stock in 1970, and he and his wife, the former Gretchep.; Saladin of Woodstock,^ presently reside with their,., family, also in Woodstock. The McHenry store is located x at 1214 N. Giee street and is , under the management ofs Jerry Freund, a local resident.' j 3 Pictured above is Jerry Freund, manager of the new McHenry Beard and Stovall. (formerly White's Men's Shop) was purchased this autumn by Richard Mann and Terry McNeese, owners of a similarly named Woodstock establish ment. Originally from New York, Mann moved from there at an early age, coming to McHenry county in 1950 and to Stovall in 1963. New Name, Ownership For McHenry Store Both the name and the ownership of a longtime McHenry clothing store have changed. Beard & Stovall history. This is a new responsibility which is not to be taken lightly and one which is essential to the democratic backbone of our nation. Young men and women have been asking for some time now to have a broader voice in affairs of state and this law gives them an opportunity to do just that. The second new privilege which legislators granted young men and women, aged 19 and 20, is the right to purchase beer and wine. However, this new statute may have been modified by local ordinances and youths are advised by the Illinois State Bar Association to check their local liquor laws before partaking of these alcoholic beverages. Another warning should be made. This new law applies only to the purchase of beer and wine. 19 and 20 year olds who attempt to purchase any other type of liquor are subject to arrest and conviction of a misdemeanor. And of course, with any new privilege goes a corresponding responsibility. Abuse of this privilege can possibly mean that it will be taken away. We learn in youth, and un derstand, in age. Steagall Urges Farmers To Save Fuel In All Forms ^ "Every farmer must do whdt^ he can to save fuel in every form in every way possible,",. asserts Stanley Steagal}, . general manager of McHenry : FS. '! McHenry FS is the farmer- ; owned cooperative providing farm supplies throughout McHenry and Walworth ' counties and is the major,'/ source of energy fpr agricultural users. Steagall's declaration is part , of a report to farmers on the',, energy outlook, as he asserts: "We do not know exactly how ? much fuel McHenry FS will be getting in the coming months, j We do know it will be less than we had in 1973. "Everyone must save fuel ' and since we don't know how much we will receive, we can't ! say how much farmers shouLf) j conserve, but I urge every farmer to conserve all he can. Steagall offered these J specific ways farmers (and , others) can conserve fuel: 1. Don't idle engines un-, necessarily. 2. Don't do unnecessary - driving. 3. Don't use fuel for recreation vehicles. "We will be conserving all the fuel we can in our own use at McHenry FS," continued Steagall. "Give us as much lead time as you can pn orders, because we'll be delivering wfteri we have a fuel truck load to go to the country. "Also, your salesman may" visit your farm less often and he will depend on the phone more to keep in touch." ĉ j-nd <̂ Ljou cStiH <zNzsA Co/uilfr- _ <cA/[aLf(jE (Ian, cMzljfi.
