Miss Elliott is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Glenn Elliott of 4410 W. Ponca, McHenry. Mr. Rodenkirch's parents are Mr. and Mrs. Hilary G. Rodenkireh of 1209 N. Park, McHenry. The polar bear is often seen swimming easily, 200 miles from the nearest land. The booklets that are for sale are a part of the fund raising efforts of the Family Service and Mental Health Clinic for McHenry County. Eleven coupons in the booklet representing restaurants, golf courses,' and movie theatres are used usually on the basis of buying either one meal, a round of golf or one ticket to the movies and in return, the booklet holder receives one meal, round of golf or ticket free. Anyone wishing to purchase a "Let Us Entertain You" booklet may do so at any of the clinic offices in McHenry, Cary, Crystal Lake or Wood­ stock. They may also be purchased from Dr. Peter Griesbach, the Rev. Joseph Kulak, Mrs. John Nolan or Dr. Robert Stein in McHenry or Talutha Tesmer, Spring Grove. Persons may also reserve a booklet by calling the clinic at 385-6400. dfiilxlxsn l ^Ufizabiz Offtxincj 9oz ^January 12-13 A Wicked Queen, Seven Helpful Dwarfs and Prince Good-hearted are coming to life in a Children's Theater production, "Snow White and The Seven Dwarfs in the Black Forest," which is in its final stages of rehearsal. This show will be presented Jan. 12 and 13 by West campus drama class in the auditorium at West cam­ pus. Because of the demand for tickets, the director and cast have decided to have an extra performance Jan. 12 at 2 p.m. which will be a matinee Saturday afternoon. The evening performances will be Saturday and Sunday evenings, Jan. 12 and 13, at 7:30 p.m. in the auditorium. All members of the drama class are selling tickets. Women Of ---- ---- The Moose The meeting of McHenry Women of the Moose, No. 1348, was called to order by Chaplain Monique Kopp, with twenty-six present. Balloting was held and was favorable. Enrollment was held for Diana Cusker and Sandra Berry. A Christmas party and ex­ change of gifts was enjoyed. Because of the next meeting falling on the holiday, the next two meetings will be on Jan. 15- 22. The attendance award was not claimed; the special award was won by Dorothy Belshaw and Marge Granath. J "Contemporary Com­ munications and Values" is the theme for the forty-third Church and Community in­ stitute scheduled Jan. 14-15 at the Illini Union, University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign campus. The Institute is a non- denominational effort by many Illinois churches and the U. Of I. Cooperative Extension Service to provide continuing education and in-service training for pastors and lay men and women. Subjects to be discussed include: trends in com­ munication; freedom of the press-the first amendment and government; changing values and responsibilities; (the What's New? Twice Told Tales FORTY YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of Jan. 4, 1934) Mrs. Henry Sompel, 69, died at her home in Johnsburg Tuesday morning after a long illness. The Wieland factory at Spring Grove has discontinued business, after being operated by Arthur May for the past twenty-seven years. The milk which has been handled there will be hauled to Ringwood, Genoa City and a part of it will be trucked to Chicago. Depositors in the West McHenry State Bank are now guaranteed up to the sum of $2,500 through the bank's qualification in the new Federal Deposit Insurance corporation. The Federal Deposit Insurance corporation is a new branch of government service by which all banks which have qualified are in­ sured up to $2,500 for each deposit. A watch night party was enjoyed by members .of the pinochle club and their invited guests at the home of Dr. and Mrs. C.W. Klontz. A chicken dinner was served after which games, music and cards were enjoyed. At a meeting held Sunday the Altar and Rosary Sodality elected the following officers. President Mrs. Jack Walsh, .First Vice-President Mrs. Mary F Powers, Second Vice- President, Mrs. E.R. Sutton, Secretary Mrs. Herman Schaefer, Treasurer, Mildred Kinsala. Mrs. John Thompfcbn and daughter, Mildred, returned from a visit at Terra Haute, Ind. Miss Mildred left Wed­ nesday to continue her studies at DeKalb Teachers college. TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of Jan. 6, 1949) The first death of the new year in McHenry was that of Or ten James Crane, 43, who died Jan. 1 at the Waukegan Sanitarium where he had been a patient for many months. Mr. and Mrs. Leo Meyer and family have moved from the Boger home on Waukegan street to the Henry F. Schaefer place on the same street, recently purchased by Joseph M. Freund. The large number of 510 babies were registered as making their entrance into the world at the Woodstock hospital during 1948 breaking the record set in 1947 when 505 births were recorded. Mr. and Mrs. Henry M. Weber of Riverside drive an­ nounce the engagement of their daughter, Jean, to Bernard N. Kennebeck of Johnsburg. Mr. and Mrs. Frank Gans returned on Monday from a 6,000 mile, three week trip to Florida. During their travels they visited at the Florida Motor Court at Gainsville, Fla., operated by the H.S. Carlson, pastor, will be celebrated by the congregation Sunday, Jan. 9. TEN YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of Jan. 9, 1964) Miss Clara Stoffel, second only to Peter M. Justen in years of business service to the McHenry community, retired on Jan. 1. She had been a part of the insurance firm of Stoffel and Reihansperger since September of 1916. Her retirement brought to an end forty-seven years of loyal and efficient " service to the firm started bjLher father, the late Simon Stoffel, in 1884, when he travelled by bicycle to write insurance policies. McHenry County has been allotted $30,494 as its share of the Motor Fuel Tax paid into the state treasury during December. A Chicago couple, Mr. and Mrs. David Stromberg, are the parents of a son born New Year's Day, Jan. 1 at the McHenry hospital. St. John the Baptist Catholic church was the setting for a beautiful winter wedding Jan. 4 when Miss Clarene Freund became the bride of Mr. Robeft L. Peisert. Rev. Fr. Weideman officiated at the double ring ceremony. Kenneth Betts of McHenry reported to county deputies this week that a break-in and vandalism had occurred in two Wonder Lake homes Where he had been working for a Savings and Loan association in Chicago. Holidays are a part of the cultural heritage that reflect the values held by society. By learning about holidays, children learn important social understandings, attitudes and skills. The second grade classes at Edgebrook school chose Christmas Around the World as the theme of their studies for this holiday season. Activities included viewing of filmstrips and listening to stories of other countries telling various folklore. The children learned that their favorite Christmas character, Santa Claus, was known as Pere Noel in France (Father Christmas) and in Switzerland is called St. Nicholas. The final activity which was the highlight of the week was the presentation of Mrs. Poirier and Mrs. Hjarpe. Mrs. Poirier told of the customs of Germany and brought many interesting decorations commonly used. They also listened to German Christmas carols. Mrs. Hjarpe explained the Swedish Christmas customs and displayed their Christmas articles, as well as taught various phrases in Swedish. The activity the children most enjoyed was the decorating and eating of Swedish and German Christ­ mas cookies.
