V PAGE « - PLA1NDEALER-FRIDAY. DECEMBER 2*. 197 5 SPORTS Bradley Nips Warriors 56-55 In Tournament EARL WALSH' So I Hear SPORTS EDITOR J "Brenda" handed us a box at the Plaindealer Christmas party and said we had to open it and read the card It was from Clyde Blackwell, with this added: "The little white socks did not seem to help them win Well! Shall we try a different tactic" How about trying Danny Devil and his hoo-doo on the opposing team9" Danny Devil was in the box, but may be worn out before the baseball season starts People like to play with the little devil. Saw Coach Ludwig's team beat Crown last Friday night. Seems like a long time ago It wasn't a game to rave about. But, we won. Crown was cold at the start, but had the spirit to stay in the game right to the end. They used a Zone defense very ef fectively. Dick Rabbitt told you about some of the subs who came off the bench to give a good ac count of themselves Perhaps the highlight of the game came, with six minutes to go, when one of the officials made our cheerleaders sit down. Then he had to set down the visiting darlings. The old meanie! Some people do. Some overdo. Walter Harbecke read our note about "Beautiful Down town Volo" and wants some mention about the Johnsburg loop. Next it will be Barreville. Not a creature was stirring Christmas night around the City of McHenry. Rain put the kibosh on the beauty of the landscape. People must have been all tired out so turned out the lights and went to bed. Santa forgot the socks, but did bring a nice necktie that won't have to be exchanged. w Blake came outMrf bowling retirement to roll a 188 game last week. We'll be watching for a 200 game and 500 series. You can tell it is the day AFTER Christmas. You can find a parking place. Doggone! John and Dorothy Weichmann were in to say hello and we were out to lunch - a long lunch Federal income tax forms arrived in the mail today. Somebody said they are sim plified. Must look again. Guess that's right. Says here you can round off cents to whole dollars. By Dick Rabbitt The Bradley Boilermakers again defeated the McHenry Warriors in a thrilling game, 56 to 55, in the first round of the Kankakee holiday tournament. Last year these same two teams met in the finals and Bradley won in a triple over time 61 to 57. Bradley jumped off to a quick 4 to 0 lead, before Him- pelmann's three point play at 5:50 got the Warriors on the board. At 3:45 of the period Steve Buss put the Warriors ahead 9 to 8 for their only lead of the game. Bradley managed to catch the locals napping on a couple of fast breaks and went ahead at the quarter 19 to 14. In the second quarter the Warriors fell behind 21 to 15 when Buss again canned two quick baskets to bring the score to 21-19. Wanta's two free throws tied the game at 21 all, but then Bradley hit on three quick baskets and pulled away to a 32 to 27 half time lead. The opening minutes of the third period were all Bradley and it looked as if the game might become a rout. They increased their lead 41 to 31 with 5 minutes remaining in the period. With Koerber, Him- pelmann, Buss and Kaspryzk all getting baskets the Warriors narrowed the margin to 47 to 41 going into the final 8 minutes. During the final period Ben Himpelmann had the hot hand getting 10 of his 19 points during this time. The Warriors pecked away at the Bradley lead at the halfway point trailed by 2, 49 to 47 At 0:55 Staric's free throw brought the score 56-55 Bradley. At 20 seconds the Warriors had a call go against them giving Bradley the ball, and down went the hopes of the Warriors. But with 2 seconds remaining the Warriors got the ball at midcourt. A play was set up and Camasta's shot at the buzzer did just roll off the rim, and Bradley was the winner 56 to 55. It seemed like in the early stages of the game the Warriors had the tourney jit ters. They had numerous turnovers during the first half of the game. Steve Buss was playing under the weather with the flu bug. The young sparkplug of the Warriors did an excellent job in the second half holding Kronst scoreless. He had 14 points during the first half. The officiating was something to behold. Sitting in press row the comments were not complimentary toward the officials. It was the opinion of many that the hometown Bradley got the better of the officiating and one Kankakee sportscaster remarked to me "I want Bradley to win, but I hate to see them win on this kind of officiating". Once again the Warriors left their mark at Kankakee. Last year they became the favorites of the crowd because of their hustle and fine play, and this year was no different. Their gallant bid to overcome overwhelming odds will long be remembered in Kankakee. Lesi we be fair, the Warriors did manage to make only 11 out of 19 freethrows, while Bradley made 18 out of 25. This makes the second tournament win for the tankers in the past several weeks. They previously won the Stevenson Invitational early in December. With a 7 man squad and scoring in all 10 events the "Warriors" had to overcome what would be considered impossible odds. But they fought off the challenges of Lake Forest and Wheeling and hung on for a narrow victory. The Warriors set two new records and managed to pick up another first place on their way to the title. The 200 Medley Relay team of Scott Topp, Mark Koerber, Jon Sek, and Randy Watkins set a new record in the fine time of 1:49.1. (STAFF PHOTO-WAYNE GAYLORD) Finding Security In Retirement During the working years it is important to consider the level of monthly income a couple will need five or ten years after they retire -- not the amount they can comfortably get by on during the first year of retirement. For too many retired persons the golden years quickly become tarnished after four or five years into re tirement because of inflation. Des pite periodic increases in Social Security benefits, the perennial increases in the cost of living put too many fixed-income retirees on a relentless economic treadmill. Social Security benefits often help recipiehts to just about catch up with the advances in the cost of living, but to get ahead of the cost of living is very rare with just Social Security. Inflation has taken its effect in just the past decade. In 1962 sir loin steaks were generally avail able for 68 cents a pound. What do you pay for sirloin steaks today? Although steak prices have al most tripled over the last decade, average retirement income - in cluding Social Security benefits - have only climbed about 75 per cent during that same period. Planning is so important, but it is important to realize that we live in a flexible economy and the cost of living today might be rad ically different than the costs in 10 more years. A well-planned family financial program during the working years may help to assure that the sirloins need not stop when you reach age 65.
