The McHenry County College basketball team will buy that statement and were a happy group this past Saturday night, Jan. 5, as they defeated Highland Community College of Freeport 86 to 77. Jim Bushert had his finest game of the year against Highland as he dropped in 9 field goals and an equal number of free throws for 27 counters. Wittmus, Blazier*' and Groskinsky each con tributed 18 points to the well balanced attack. Once again the Scots started very slowly, making only one field goal in the first four minutes of play. They trailed by as many as 10 points mid way through the first half but then they began to hit the hoop. They caught their opponents just before the half and took a narrow 37 to 36 lead to the locker room. Returning to the court MCC got a hot hand and jumped in front by 10 points never again to be headed. MCC posted their best shooting percentage of the year as they connected on 35 of 67 field goal attempts for a 52 percent mark. Dale Groskinsky led the way to a 38 to 26 rebound advantage as pulled down 12 off the boards. This week the Scots have a busy schedule. They traveled to Mayfair in Chicago on Tuesday Jan. 8 and (hen journey to Madison to take on the U. of Wisconsin freshmen squadron on Wednesday, the ninth. Saturday afternoon, Jan. 12, they will play host to Oakton in a 2 p.m. contest at the Crystal Lake fieldhouse. This is the last session the club plans for this season unless enough requests are made for another. The classes will be held Saturday and Sunday, Jan. 19 and 20 from 12:00-6:00 in Rich mond. A fee will be charged. Anyone who is 10 years or 10 months of age is invited to attend. ^ These classes make the child familiar with his snowmobile. Remember way back when only about six people in McHenry had to file income tax returns - and their names were posted on the bulletin board in the Post Office? EARL WALSH So I Hear SPORTS EDITORJ Coach Bud Grant of the Minnesota Vikings is no dummy. He grasped onto tffe shabby treatment his team is getting - "Junior High School dressing room," practicing on a high school field and driving 10 miles to get there. It gives him a great chance to fire up his team. We said the Vikings would win and the local experts have let it be known that we are plain stupid. So -- We visited Mabel Powers some months ago, had a great visit and learned, she was a readetfof this column nonsense. .HARVARD ™S;' FAMILY ENTERTAINMENT PROGRAM NOW SHOWING - JANUARY 11th thru JANUARY 17th Doors Open 6:50 - Cartoon at 7:00 - Feature at 7:10 Only! She lived to the great age of 90 years. A grand person. And we well remember her late sister, Mrs. Thomas F. Bolger - another lovable, Christian woman. It is rewarding to have known them. And we lost a neighbor this week, Mrs. Severina Unti. She was the greatest gardener this side of the earth. It won't seem right to look across the yard next summer and not see her in that garden. As Grandma Freund used to say, "She has gone to a better place." Patti Frett, who makes up this page, has informed us that Marian Central's basketball team will beat the Warriors Saturday night. Of course, having a brother on the Marian team may have some influence on our gal Patti. Whoever wins will have a crowd of rooters cheering them on the way. Don't miss it. Clearing snow from sidewalks is a big topic of discussion these days. Some business places catch h-- because they let it pile up, freeze and make it tough for their customers. That's not to say that people in residential areas dofft get their special blessings. At our house we have a very fine young man who does a great job with his snow shovel. ButS>f course he can't get to it until after school. We always think back to the days in McHenry when George Meyers was out early to clear the walks with his horse-drawn plow. McHenry was ahead of the times. Maybe those horse and buggy days weren't so bad. Warriors Entertain Marian Central Tomorrow Night how it operates and the rules for driving. Also included are simple safety precautions and basic first aid. These two class days are a must for those who wish to get their Wisconsin certification which is required of anyone 12 years of age who wants to drive a snowmobile in Wisconsin. June Buchert, 678-6331, or Gayl Cunningham, 678-6531, will take your reservations and answer questions. Please call by Jan. 14. Parents are encouffj&ged to sit in on the classes. HARMONY CLUB Well, snowmobilers we have had a couple of weeks of wonderful weather for snowmobiling. COLD? Yes, but when dressed for it and planned rides so that you can stop and warm up at good intervals it's wonderful. Now we need to do a little dance. Not too much but just enough to fill in those trails and make good riding again instead of bumptiy bump.. Remember Jan. 19 the By Dick Rabbitt After traveling to Mundelein to play a North Suburban Conference game tonight, Coach Ken Ludwig's. "Warriors" play host to Marian tomorrow night at West Campus gym. The sophomore game will get under way at 6:30 with the varsity game to follow. This will be the third meeting between the two schools. Three years ago in the Elgin Regional, Marian defeated the Warriors in three overtimes, in what many consider to be the most outstanding game ever played in regional history. Last year in Woodstock the Warriors evened the series with a 84 to 52 win. This series with Marian is beginning to have the makings of a friendly rivalry. It has a lot of local flavor, as a number of the Marian squad reside in McHenry or the surrounding area. Last weekend the "Canes" split their games. They defeated Marmion of Aurora 62 to 52, and lost to St. Francis oi Wheaton in a tough game 67 to 66. f They play in the West Dvision of the Suburban Catholic Conference, and at present have a 3 and 3 record, with an overall record of 5 wins and 6 defeats. Leading the "Canes" is senior center 6'4" A1 May of Spring Grove. He is helped in the front line by two local lads Bill Moerschbaecher, and Sam Anderson. Rounding out the starting five for Coach Bud Grover are Jackson, and Murphy of Woodstock. Marian is an improved ball club, and will be out to avenge last year's setback. On the other hand the Warriors will be out to take the lead in the series if at all possible. It looks as if it is going to be a great game. I suggest you get to the gym early for a seat. Last year in Woodstock there was standing room only. Hope to see all you good basketball fans at the game. Hll special dance at the VFW. Tickets are available from any Harmony Snowmobile Club member.
