(PL AINDE ALER PHOTO) SPOBTS Warriois Split Weekend Tilts; Lose To Mundelein, Beat Marian By Dick Rabbitt The McHenry High Warriors split a pair of weekend games, losing to Mundelein Friday night by a score of 65 to 63, and defeating Marian Central on Saturday night 71 to 66. In the Mundelein game, the Warriors trailed after the first period. During the 2nd and 3rd quarters they played perhaps the best basketball of the season as they raced to a 59 to 38 lead at the end of the third period. During the last 8 minutes the Warriors could do nothing right, while the Mustangs could do no wrong. Mundelein came on with a rush, shooting at a 74 percent clip during this time. The Warriors on the .other hand were shooting aK 10 percent, hitting 1 out of lo^ffsogithe field and 2 of 12 from the ftee-throw line. The defeat knocked\ the Warriors into a 3 way tie foa the North Suburban with Liber ty ville and Dundee. MARIAN GAME On Saturday night before the largest crowd of the season the Warriors defeated their friendly rivals from Marian by a score of 71 to 66. Both teams started out as cold as the weather outside. In the first 4 minutes Koerber's basket was the only score of the game. At the 4 minute mark Tonyan's 10 footer put Marian on the board, and the teams began to get the feel of the game. Dan Camasta's three baskets paved the way to a Warrior 14 to 8 first quarter lead. With Koerber and An derson each exchanging a pair of baskets and Stark's free throws the Warriors increased their lead to 22 to 12 with 5:30 remaining. Marian came on with a rush of 9 straight points. Murphy's jumper, and May's free throw got them going. Moerschbaecher's 15 footer and Murphy again plus Anderson's two free throws and the score was 22 to 21. It was at this point that Marian received a jolt as Anderson with 3:57 remaining in the 2nd period fouled out of Frosh Wrestlers Tie Mundelein 30-30 Coach Bill Hutchinson's freshmen wrestlers tied Mundelein freshmen 30 to 30. Later in the period Murphy's two free throws put Marian ahead for the first time 27-26, but Him- pelmann came right back to put the Warriors in the lead again 28 to 27. The half ended with the Warriors leading 33 to 32. After the intermission the Warriors seemed to put things together as they dominated the third period. With Wanta, Himpelmann and Koerber all scoring, the Warriors jumped out to a 49 to 38 lead with 1:10 remaining. Koerber then made a turn around jump shot, and with 3 seconds remaining ^Wagner's two free throws for Marian made the score 51 to 40. As the buzzer sounded Steve BUss literally pitched a 50 footer that hit the bullseye and the Warriors led at the end of three periods 53 to 40. The "Canes" were not going down without a fight. A1 May their fine center began to take over. Having been playing since the first period with 4 fouls, he took charge of the Marian offense. With his 10 foot turnaround jumpers and Jackson hitting from the out side Marian began to close the gap. With 3:15 remaining Bill Moerschbaecher tied the game at 63 all. Koerber took ad vantage of the foul trouble that May was in, and began to go for the basket, getting 3 baskets, and with Himpelmann's three point play with 50 seconds remaining the game was out of reach. Jackson's free throw made it 71 to 66 for the Warriors. As usual both cheering sections made a lot of noise. The bantering back and forth was in good nature and fun. The game was an exciting one for both teams. Warrior fans were thinking when Marian began to close the gap in the final period, that it would be shades of the previous nite at Mundelein when they blew a 21 pt lead. On the other hand Marian fans were hoping for a big comeback win. Marian was playing under a handicap from early in the game. Sam Anderson their fine forward fouled out midway in the second quarter, However, Jackson, his replacement, did an outstanding job picking up 17 pts. A1 May had 4 fouls early in the game and stuck it out until 2 seconds remained in the game. The turning point was when the Warriors went into their zone press and forced Marian into several key turnovers, and when Koerber began to drive on May for the basket. Koerber hit a season high of 20 pts, and is improving with every game. Marian has a fine club that has improved as the season progressed. They can shoot, and their free throw accuracy is something to behold. They have size, and a fair amount of speed. The Warriors must remember that basketball is a 4 quarter game not three. They seem to get a big lead and then have a letdown. Two tough games this weekend Dundee and Barrington. Let's hope the Warriors decide to play a good fast 4 quarters in each of the games. So was his wife, "Vi", at the Warrior-Marian Central basketball game here Saturday night. It was a cold night, but a large crowd turned out to see this game that all good fans call a natural. We suspect the severe weather kept some away. The Warriors finally won it 71-66 after a shaky start, one point lead at half time, 53-40 edge at the end of three quarters - then a real scare before the final gun. It looked like they might blow it. The Hurricanes of Marian are plenty big, rugged and determined. Some teams going into the last period with a 13 point deficit would fold up their tents and silently steal away. Instead, this gang came on like a hurricane. Credit must go to the Warriors for coming through when the chips were down in the last few minutes. Their work was cut out for them and they accomplished what they had to do. There was too much whistle tootin' in the game for our taste. But, that's nothing. There always is -- Fans on both sides were plenty excited. In the time honored custom, they hooted when fouls went against their own team and thought it was just right when the opposition got the whistle. So I Hear SPORTS EDIT0RJ Would you believe? Ray McGee and Hugh Fanning braved the weather to see the game. They must be rugged for fellows past middle age. Patti Frett came up to our loft to see us during the half time rest. Told her we could see her mother, Mrs. Moer schbaecher, across the way saying Hail Marys. Patti didn't think so, but with a son playing for Marian we wouldn't blame Mom. Our mother used to get out the rosary beads when Notre > Dame was playing. Both teams played games Friday night. Many, coaches are against games two nights in a row. The cold start that these teams got off to made us think they have a point. We love those bouncy little cheerleaders, but wish they would time their yells to finish before a player shoots a free throw. They are still talking about that 50-foot buzzer shot that Steve Buss sank - one of those once in a lifetime heave-ho, let- er-fly shots. A ragged game turned into a thriller for the crowd. This series is bound to continue by popular demand. Yeah--we were stupid in picking Minnesota to win the super bowl game. That Miami team was a perfect machine. Maybe some day we will pick a winner in sports. We added "in sports" sinee Bob Adams Forfeiting three matches for a total of 18 points was just too much to overcome and the* "Rassling Warriors" went down to defeat to Mundelein vhere on Friday night 38 to 11. The JV squad also lost to the Mundelein JV's 36 to 25. Brett Decker led the scoring with 13 pts as Coach Collins used his 18 man squad in the game. thinks we picked one winner even if our wife didn't. Guess when we pick on those Cub fans we will have to be kind to Jim Freund at the popular Longhorn restaurant. His hospitality overcomes us. Mrs. Alfred (Eleanore) Miller thought we wrote that filling stations don't give service since the gas shortage. What we wrote was that we don't "expect" service. So she decided to keep feeding us at the American Legion Home on Rotary meeting days. It may be hard to put up with Edward Blake after his letter to the Trib sports section last week telling how the Miami Dolphins would smother the Vikings. Last week we goofed.
