ENTERTAIN CHILDREN Thirty-six children and seven adults from the Woodstock Children's home were en tertained by the McHenry Sno- bus Snowmobile Club, Sunday, Jan. 13. The eventful afternoon was held at the Polar Pairs Clubhouse, located on the Breezy Lawn Farm in Spring G r o v e . F o r t y - t h r e e snowmobiles were made available by club members for the children (accompanied by an adult) to drive. Refresh ments were served throughout the afternoon for all present. The children of the Sno-bugs club voted to have this outing for the less fortunate children, in lieu of their own annual Christmas party. Canned Laughter One of the sorriest fea tures of commercial televi sion is the constant, phony sound of canned laughter on so many productions. So- called comedies are loaded with this fakery--and at the most feeble effort at humor, laughter fills the air. The "smart" people who produce these shows, and sell them miraculously to sponsors, use taped laughter (no live audience) to con vince the gullible this fare is humorous, technicians dubbing in laughter on the sound track and relying on the Pavlovian reaction of n o t - t o o - b r i g h t A m e r i c a n viewers. From Mrs. Francis Eaton, West Springeld, PA: I remember back to when I was a little girl and my Mom used to scrub our clothes on the scrub board. All but the over all -- they were 'set in a round tub on the back porch in soap and water. My Mom had a stick that looked like it had a funnel turned upside down on the one end and it had holes in it. We called it a plunger. Everytime someone went by it, they were supposed to plunge it up and down 25 times. Needless to say, we children didn't bv the back porch too much. Thke . stock . ln^merica. But my Mom, God bless her, always had food on the table. We grew our own things and can ned them for the winter. What a wonderful aroma came out of the kitchen at canning time -- and home made bread fresh out of the oven! I remember our oleo was white and came in a plastic bag with the orange dot in the middle. We had to squeeze that bag to break the dot and if you squeezed it long enough, you had yellow oleo. (Ssnd contributions to thift column to His Old Timor, Box 63*, Frankfort, Ky. 40*01.)
