STAFF PHOTO-WAYNE GAYLORD PETCtMR GOT A Per For yqO PETS THAT NEED A HOME OR AR^ LOOKING FOR THEIR MASTER An ambitious and successful project has been undertaken at East campus under the direction of Miss Barbara Meding, a teacher at the school. The "strictly volunteer" program involves ap proximately sixty-four students who spend their free time working at three local schools as well as with the Headstart program. According to Miss Meding, "The main objective of the program is to allow students to gain education outside the walls of the school and to learn about, and relate to people." Students also get an op portunity to work with young boys and girls by tutoring math and reading as well as leading reveiws and small group sessions. At Landmark and Edgebrook schools, students work with children in different grade levels. At the Junior high school, boys in the volunteer program participate in the boys' physical education program. Through participation in these volunteer projects, students get the opportunity to help others and develop social skills by working with all age groups, Miss Meding said. These service-oriented ac tivities encourage the student to develop a sense of respon sibility in his work and produce many self-rewarding ex periences for the individual. The program is conducted under the Future Teachers of America (FTA). Though most of the students involved will not go on to become teachers, Miss Meding felt the experience gained would be valuable no matter what occupation was selected. Students participating in the program are Frank Anderson, Deb Alderman, Karen An derson, Mary Andrews, Cindy Barnes, Mary Bassi, Brenda Bauer, Tammie Bieschke, Pat Bell, Bob Buenzli, Pat Byrne, Sue Cable, Mary Jean Deja, Tori Donorski, Linda Filin, Jack Flanagan, Jan Flasch and Karen Freund. Unless you feel prepared to find homes for all these kittens, it is wise to consider having her spayed. Many veterinarians feel that the ideal age for spaying is at about four or five months, that is, before the first seasonal period. If you would like your pet to have a litter or two, the operation can still be safely performed at a later age. Neutering a male cat is a very simple operation and may be performed any time after the age of eight or nine months. A mature, unaltered torn has an almost uncontrollable desire to roam and fight, and his sanitary box will always have a strong odor. Males also frequently develop the habit of spaying the wall or furniture .and this is an almost impossible smell to deodorize. The altered cat's disposition will remain sweet, his playfulness will not be affected and he will not get fat and sluggish unless you coax him to overeat.
