FEBRUARY 1.1874 After Walt Freund phoned us this week and told about all the great prospects the White Sox have for the coming season, we were more convinced than ever that this is our year. Walt has two combinations of outfielders, mixing right and left handed batters and all have the speed of a deer. EARL WALSH So I Hear SPORTS EDITOR J Pitching? That was our •concern. But, not any more. 'When Walt got through naming "them, oar worries faded away. We both agree that the Sox gave up too many good young players in the Ron Santo deal. Right away Muhammad Ali and Joe Frazier start talking about a rematch. There's gold in that square ring. Never dreamed we would i consider it such a privilege to 4 pay a gas station attendant our hard earned cash for a few ; gallons of gasoline. I / ~ Was a time when we used to put the cars up on jacks for the winter. May be doing it again but not on account of the-roads. A candidate who promises us two cars in every garage is in for trouble. A promise to keep one on the road will get our vote. a Private one night saw another soldier passing and called out, "Hey, buddy, give me a light." The other soldier stopped and held out a lighted match. Raising his eyes to speak his thanks for the favor, the first soldier saw the star of a brigadier general and at once apologized, "I beg your pardon, sir. I didn't mean any disrespect. 1 didn't notice you were a general." "That's all right," replied the general, "but you should thank God that I wasn't a second 1 lieutenant.H * ** V- * lTrjjp £ " t * % ' "ft | Those amazing Ten Pin Queens have some fancy games listed again this week. Take a gander at that top score: N. Shulda, 202-571. Don't challenge them, men. Look what happened in the tennis ranks. Mrs. Howard (Mary Sutton) Wesson brought joy to our camp when she gave us a group picture of men and boys taken beside old St. Patrick's Church on Court St., maybe 50 years ago. We recognize most of them, but may have to get some young sprout like Cousin Melvin to identify a few. Want to write xtywn all the names. Anna Frisby, a grand old girl of nearly 92 years, passed away this week. How well we remember visiting their home on John St., many times with our grandma. EDWARD Lullie Carlson, B. Carlson, T. Chovaneck Leetzow ~ By Dick Rabbitt The McHenry high "Warriors" of Coach Ken Ludwig hope to rebound from last week's loss to Libertyville when they travel to North Chicago and engage the "Warhawks" on Friday night. The North Chicago five of Coach Larry Hanzel are one game behind the Warriors in the North Suburban, and would like nothing better than to beat the Warriors at the Warhawk gym. , Coach Hanzel in his 12th season at the helm of the -Warhawks has four returning lettermen from last year's squad which posted a 9 and 14 record. Marty Sztosak, 6'5" senior center, is the mainstay of the Warhawks. Mike Weakley, a 6'4 " senior forward, Stan Jakatis at 5'10" along with the football speedster Emmanuel Hanna a 5'8" guard are the lettermen returning. 6'5" sophomore Del Yarbrough rounds out the starting five. North Chicago is big and rough, and the Warriors will have their hands full reboun ding with the taller "Hawks". The "Warriors" have shaken off the Libertyville defeat. That is past history, and they have been working hard this week to overcome their lack of offense against the "Cats". On Saturday night the "Warriors" will* travel to Kaneland and try to avenge a defeat they suffered in the King Korn ^ Tournament in November. If you recall the Warriors lost a 17 point lead and went down to defeat at the hands of the Knights. Kaneland was the runnerup in the State Class A tournament last year, and the Warriors would like nothing better than to hang a loss on the Knights. As usual I would like to en courage everyone to follow the Warriors, but I know the fuel shortage will keep some of you at home. If you can make it, I'm sure the team will ap preciate it. McHenry County College had their mini winning streak snapped this past weekend by a fine Triton College basketball team. The Scots were forced back into the real world as Triton's Warriors blasted the nets for 112 points while limiting the McHenry squad to 74. Dale Groskinsky was the only Scot hitting the hoop with any regularity. He dropped in 34 points and grabbed 10 rebounds but he didn't get much help from his teammates in either department.
