FAGK B MCHENRY PLAINDEALER WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY «. 1974 fflSM mm EVEN THE REF appears to be in doubt about the hold that Steve Hurckes has on his North Chicago opponent. Whatever the hold, Steve wrapped him up to capture his fourteenth win of the season by a 13-2 score. Steve leads the Warriors in takedowns with 37 and has lost 3 matches. The Warriors upset the powerful Warhawks 35- 22 last Friday night. This Friday and Saturday the Warriors meet Irving Crown high school to compete in the North Suburban Conference wrestling tournament. The matches start at 7 p.m. on Friday and 1p.m. and£:30 p.m. on Saturday. (STAFF PHOTO-WAYNE GAYLORD) SPORTS Met our friends the Harry Ecklunds on two consecutive evenings last week. In fun, fellowship and a good time, Harry remarked, "We only kid people we like." Come to think about it, that's what we do in this column. But, if you think you may escape, remember we like everybody. recently entered a furniture store (not in McHenry). Spoke to the man behind a counter who was obviously looking over some invoices. He didn't speak. If he had asked, "May I help you?, we would probably have come back with the standard answer - "We are just looking around." He didn't ask. There wasn't another soul in the store as we looked around. We walked out. He didn't speak. Now, there's a salesman! EARL WALSH So I Hear SPORTS EDITORJ Sports writers will have a big time trying to stir up a feud between Bill Melton and Ron Santo. The big question will be, "Who's on third?" Wish they were that crowded in all positions. One thing for sure, they can't let Melton bat and Santo run for him. From the time George Freund and Mary picked us up Saturday night to attend the McHenry Hospital annual dinner meeting at McHenry Country Club until they wheeled into our driveway to let us out, it was one fine night out. The program was real good. So was the prime beef. McHENRY AMERICAN LEGION POST 491 RINGWOOD RD. ROARING "20's" PARTY DANCING TO "DON KNUTSON COMBO" FEB. 9-1974-8 P.M. til? That enormous payroll is a big boost to McHenry's economy. President Roy Olsen, ever the capable one, ran the entire program along real good in leading up to the speaker of the evening. And he was a good one. Some day the McHenry Library will expand. As mentioned many times, we hope to see some space reserved for historical papers and pictures of the McHenry -area. Maybe the collection should be started now. What do you think? Any ideas? What a man! Met Fred Meyer Sunday night entering the Fox Hole (for a bite to eat) with THREE young girls, his wife, Ethel Conway and Lucille Ott. Ethel was happy over bowling a 200 game. From Dick Rabbitt's report it sounds like our Warrior basketball team ran into too much height at North Chicago where they were knocked out of first place. On Saturday night the Ludwig boys bounced back to beat Kaneland. Dick seems to think the team now has the momentum for a couple of victories this week. That we would like. Soph Cagers Split Pair Over Weekend Coach Gary Collins' sophomore cagers split a pair of games over the past weekend. On Friday night they lost a close 2 point decision to North Chicago by a score of 45 to 43. Brett Decker with 19 points led the locals. Also Ron Himpelmann and Otto Dschida, a pair of sub guards, came off the bench to do an excellent job of handling the North Chicago full court press. On Saturday the young Warriors led all the way to defeat the Kaneland Sophs by a score of 56 to 50. Again Brett Decker's 19 points were high for the game. (STAFF PHOTO-WAYNE GAYLORD) Waniois Lose To Wariiawks, Defeat Kaneland Five 71 - 63 Coach Ken Ludwig's McHenry High Warriors dropped out of a first place tie Friday night when they were defeated by North Chicago 64 to 53. The loss put the Warriors in a tie for second place with North Chicago, each with a 5 and 3 record. The Warriors jumped off to a quick lead led by Tom Stark with 7 points and held on to a 12 to 10 first quarter margin. Both teams traded free throws during the opening minutes of the 2nd period before Szostek's two quick baskets put the Warhawks ahead to stay for the evening. They increased their margin 30 to 19 at halftime, when the Warriors managed only four points in the last 4 minutes of the period. In the opening minutes of the 3rd period the Warriors came alive and outscored the Warhawks 10 to 6 to close the gap to 36-29, but then the roof caved in, and the North Chicago five widened the gap to 44-35 going into the final frame. The shorter Warriors battled the Warhawks down to the final buzzer, but could not overcome the advantage built up, plus the taller Hawks' rebounding. The Warriors were outrebounded by the taller Warhawks 38 to 23, and once again Steve Himpelmann was held to a total of 4 points. Junior forward Tom Stark of the Warriors with 22 points was high for both teams. It was a loosely officiated game, and the taller North Chicago five seemed to have the better of it. They just wore down the smaller McHenry team, and that was the margin of victory. AVENGE KANELAND DEFEAT 71 to 63 f Saturday night the Warriors traveled to Kaneland and avenged a defeat at the hands of the Knights earlier in the season by a score of 71 to 53. The Warriors never trailed during the game. Tom Stark had the hot hand during the first period as the Warriors jumped off to a big lead and led 25 to 19 at the quarter. Ben Himpelmann kept the Warriors going in the second period with 4 baskets and the Warriors led at halftime 36 to 29. The Knight's fought back and with 5:10 remaining in the period trailed 40 to 29. Then Steve Koerber, the 6'4" sophomore center, took control of the boards at both ends of the court and along with Rog Wanta put the Warriors ahead 54 to 45 going into the final frame. During the 3rd period Koerber had 4 baskets and Wanta's 3 baskets paced the Warriors. The final 8 minutes saw the Warriors play steady ball and control the game to win in easy fashion 71 to 63. Steve Himpelmann finally got off the 4 point budge tfiat hampered him the past two games. Tom Stark had a good first half, but had to sit out most of the second half in foul trouble. Steve Buss again played a splendid defensive game. Bill Richey the high scorer for Kaneland had 12 points the^ first half, then "Bussy" put the clamps on him the second half allowing him one free throw, and only 4 shots from the field in the final 16 minutes of play. He gives all he's got for a full 32 minutes, and he is definitely an asset to Coach Ludwig's Warriors. The fine play of Steve Koerber cannot be overlooked. This sophomore is the most improved player in the league. His work along the baseline is something to behold. His rebounding was a definite factor in the Warrior victory Saturday night, along with his season's high of 27 points. When the Warriors were shut out from the outside, they looked for Koerber, and he didn't let them down. Maybe this is an omen for the Warriors, the big fellow can get open, if he does - get him the ball, he knows where the basket is located. * This weekend the Warriors are in another doubleheader. They play at Crystal Lake on Friday night, and host the Woodstock "Blue Streaks" on Saturday night. More about these games in Friday's edition. Coach Paul P a l m a t e e r ' s " R a s s l i n g Warriors" defeated the North Chicago "Warhawks" for the first McHenry victory in the 10 year rivalry between the two schools. Forfeiting two matches the Warriors were down 12 to 0 before they took the mat. In the 98 lb class Greg Worm pinned Tom Livingston, and when Ken Scanlin pinned Lopez at 105 the Warriors found themselves right back in the match with a score of 12 to 12. After Parker, Phillips, and Hood all won matches for North Chicago, the Warriors struck back with a vengeance. Alvord pinned Wyche, and Hurckes thrashed Callahan, to bring the Warriors close to the Warhawks. When Lane at 167 defeated White, the locals found themselves tied with two matches to go. Bob Eppel then pinned O'Brien, and when Mike Thornton won a decision over Gebehardt, the Warrior gym became a madhouse. Victories have not been too plentiful this season for the Warriors. This win over North Chicago was a well deserved* win for the coaching staff and s q u a d m e m b e r s . Congratulations are in order for a fine team victory.
