We presume those coaches are all nice fellows. As the young folks say, they lost their cool. Genevieve Knox told us that a former McHenryite and school teacher, "Maggie" Ward, died in Forida at the age of 85 years. The last time we saw her, she hadn't lost her snap or winning smile. We didn't think of her in that age group. The following came to our sports desk (and we use the term humorously): "Little Randy Buenzli, an 8 year old, bowled a 198 game last Saturday in league. He was exactly 100 pins over his average. This is Randy's first year in the Teenage League. Watch out Sam, or you won't be able to beat any of your boys." Congratulations, Randy. Just remember how you did that and roll the ball the same way all the time. They will never forget Hebron in Illinois basketball discussions. In the Sunday Trib, Rick Talley makes a point when he says "Allow the Class A Champion to compete the following weekend as one of the eight entries in the Class AA tournament." Of course, there is justification in separating the little schools from the big ones, but nobody will ever forget the Hebron Green Giants knocking out the giants in the state tournament. Talley wants to give the small schools a chance for the big prize. He may have something there if he could get the state athletic association powers to listen. It won't be long now until the metropolitan papers will be giving space to the baseball prospects. Many a rookie will get the raves, then fade away. It is the ones who come up in the fall whom we take seriously. Found Bimbo's a hummin' after being closed a couple of weeks. Asked Joey Etten if his Mom was still in the country. Dave Meyer explained that she has headed for Cub camp. (That'll be the day!) Dick Wimmer and Pat were in wonderment as they told about wanting Pat's Mom to join them, but she preferred staying home with the boys. The Cadys were there and headed home early. Saw Ted McNish, fresh from California, but didn't get a chance for a report on the trip. Gene Schaefer was outlining Ron Santo's number on Eddie Bimbo's back. Forester bowrers were rehashing the day's activities. It seems the name Ed Buss was mentioned several times. He wasn't there to defend himself. Janice Pieroni, a White Sox fan and one who sees all the Notre Dame football games, was telling how she could have had a ticket to the Notre Dame - - U.C.L.A. basketball game. (Something about a conflict in her social calendar). Same old story. Who has more fun than people? FLASH! - A telephone call informs us that "An over-the-hill car dealer" will run a foot race with Dennis Jackson on March 3rd at 2 p.m. at McCracken field. So -- if you see Ed Buss out early these mornings doing road work, you will know what it is all about. Let's have the Rescue Squad ready. Northern Mini Bowmen News The annual award banquet will be held at Rimas Lodge on Griswold Lake road near Rt. 176 this Saturday, Feb. 23. Reservations may still be available from Ardene Raven, 385-6328 for the 7 p.m. dinner and dance. All NIB archery friends are invited. The Warriors trail by two games with just two to play. Dundee, the co-leader with Zion Benton, play Crystal Lake and Crown, and the way the Cards played Saturday night they can chalk up two more wins very easily. On the other hand the ZeeBees still must play at North Chicago and then host the dangerous Libertyville Wildcats. The odds favor the Cardunals, but in this wacky North Suburban anything can happen and this year may prove no exception. On Friday night in Buckner gym the Warriors never trailed. They jumped off to a quick start and the closest the Broncos managed to come within the locals was 15 to 12 at the 3:15 mark of the 1st period. From that time on for a period of 8 minutes and 23 seconds the Warriors managed to hold the Barrington five scoreless, while running off 16 straight points. It was during this time that Steve Buss had the hot hand, as he hit 4 in a row from 15 feet or better. The Warrior defense was indeed sticky during this period and caused many turnovers on the part of the Broncos. The Warriors had a 20 point advantage at half: time 37 to 17. In the opening minutes of the third period the Warriors hit a short cold spell, and only Steve Koerber's basket at 7:30 kept them from being shut out for the first 4 minutes. Then they went to work, and with sharp passing and excellent shooting built up a 57 to 32 lead going into the final quarter. At one time in the 4th period the Warriors built up a 31 point lead, but then Coach Ludwig (with mercy in his heart) took pity on the hapless Broncos and began to substitute freely, and the Warriors won it easily 75 to 49. It was the first time in Coach Ludwig's tenure at McHenry that he defeated Barrington twice in one season. Again the Warrior defense proved too much for Barrington. The press forced them into numerous turnovers. Although they had a height advantage the Warriors held their own. Steve Him- pelmann's 23 points paced the Warriors. Rog Wanta got out of a slump and hit for 14, and Tom Stark had 11. Tichy, Barrington's leading scorer, had 17, 9 of them coming after Coach Ludwig pulled his regulars. BLITZED BY CARDS On Saturday night before a Parent's Night gathering the Dundee Cardunals literally ran the Warriors out of the gym in the opening minutes of the game. The Cards jumped off to a 10 to 1 lead in the first 90 seconds and kept it up all night as. they raced to an 84 to 60 win over the Warriors. The Cards just couldn't miss in the opening period as they raced to a 28 to 12 lead. Their shooting percentage was 66 percent in comparison to the Warriors 25 percent. Time and time again the Warriors were caught shor- thanded on the fast break as Schumacher and Kipfer kept hitting from underneath. The Cards led at halftime 45 to 28. The third period was no different from the first two, the Cardunals kept running and shooting and built up a 61 to 42 lead going into the final period. During the first three periods the Cards shot at a 56 percent clip, and only the playing of reserves during the final period kept their shooting average from 50 percent. They hit for 48 percent for the game, and that's not bad for a high school club. Max Kipfer with 24 and Bill Schumacher with 23 points led the Card attack. Tom Stark's 19 was high for the Warriors. It was a letdown for the Warriors. After beating Barrington easily on Friday night, they probably took Dundee too lightly. Dundee was the better ball club on Saturday night. They are big, they can snoot, reoouna, and run. Their defense wasn't too bad either. They are a much improved ball club. They are playing the best ball in the league at the present along with the ZeeBees. Next week the Warriors are at Crown on Saturday night. Due to the 13 game conference schedule, each team has a bye, and next Friday it is the Warrior's turn to have a night off. The Warriors will close out their regular season on Friday, March 1, when they host the Crystal Lake Tigers. * BOXSCORES McHENRY fg ft pf tp Wanta 5 4 2 14 Stark 3 5 4 11 Koerber 2 0 4 4 Buss 5 0 5 10 Himpelmann 8 7 3 23 Zeller 12 2 4 815 385 5511 907 N Front St M c H e n r * . EARL WALSH' So I Hear SPORTS EDITOR J PAGE C - McHENRY PLAINDEALER • WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 20.1974 Where are the birds? Each winter we put out bird feeders to keep our feathered friends from starving - and in hopes of luring some beautiful species. What did we get this year? Sparrows. Now, it isn't our plan to put up a sign "no sparrows allowed." It is simply that we want variety in our bird sanc tuary. For a while we thought it was something we had done to of fend our feathered friends. Then came Frank Adams through our door one day to ask, "Where are all the birds this winter?" Anybody know? Saw Coach Ken Ludwig's basketball Warriors wallop Barrington's best last Friday For several years many sports fans thought the Barrington school was too big and their athletic teams too strong for the North Suburban Conference. STARK SCORES TWO - Tom Stark (with ball) goes up for an easy lay-up in the Friday night game against Barrington. McHenry won easily with Stark collecting u points. On Saturday night. Stark was high scorer with 19 points in a losing cause against Dundee. (PLAINDEALER PHOTO) This year is evidently a building year for the Bronco five. They have plenty of size and may be a different team next year as their Junior boys develop their skills. EvidenUy the down year has, gotten to the Barrington' coaching staff. It couldn't have been prayers the officials heard that prompted calling three technical fouls. Most coaches disagree with calls against their own team. 'Twas ever thus. WARRIORS WIN FRIDAY - The McHenry Warriors easily beat Barrington Friday night at McHenry 75-49. Dan Camasta (24) got two on this jump shot from the key as Marty Zeller (54) and Roger Wanta (44) get ready for a possible rebound. Barrington defenders are Tichy (11), Salstrand (40), Donovan (32), and Lally (13). The Warriors lost Saturday night to a fired up Dundee tea m 60-84. But, looking at the box score we find that those nasty old men with the whistles called 28 fouls on the Warriors against 22 for the Broncos.
