The race was run on the inside of the track due to its sloppy condition, and was won handily by Jackson in a time of just over 6 minutes. The race was run under adverse conditions due both to the condition of the track and the very high winds that prevailed Sunday. To Bussie's credit, he finished the race and did so in a time of just under 10 minutes. The THE GREAT RACE? event was witnessed by approximately 60 interested spectators, with the support for the 2 runners being about equally divided. The race resulted from a discussion at the Catholic Order of Foresters Bowling Tournament, regarding the merits of the ABCg Sports' Superstars Program and was a warm-up for Jackson's up-coming tryout later this month with the Chicago Fire Football Franchise in the World Football League. This event, which is the highlight of the winter activities, matched the best of the freshmen girls against that of the sophomores for the first game. Although the freshman class made a valiant effort, especially with a fine third quarter rally, the sophomores proved to be too much for them as they fell to a 39-14 loss. The freshmen team was coached by Krista Justen and included Patty Althoff, Renee Freund, Monica Haley, Annette Hansen, Kathy Herdrich, Meg Humannn, Jayne Liptrot, Cookie Miller, Cathy Pintozzi, and Kelly Staley. Playing for the victorious sophomores were Kathy Brooks, Eileen Connell, Diane Eschner, Pam Fleming, Reggie Lunkenheimer, Taina Olsen, Kathy Rogers and Linda Rupp. The sophomores were coached by Linda Meurer. Before the big game between the juniors and seniors, a Northern Mini Bowmen News Over 120 archers and friends of Northern Illini Bowmen helped honor the NIB Club Champions and successful big game bowhunters at the McHenry based archery club's Annual Banquet. "Wes and The Plainsmen" from Great Lakes furnished the music for dancing at the Rimas Lodge on Griswold Lake Last Saturday. Earl Paddock of McHenry was the Master of Ceremonies presenting awards to club Champions: Joe Winkler of Mundelin in Free Style and Ray and Ann Martin of Evanston in Barebow. The Traveling Family Trophy was also won by Ray and Ann Martin. The Duke Adams Taveling Trophy for the largest deer arrowed by a Northern Illini Bowman went to Ray Koch of Justice for his 144 lbs. (field dressed weight) 8 point Illinois buck. A decorative wall plaque trophy was won by Jim Box of McHenry for his first deer taken with the bow. Other deerslayers adding engraving to their formerly won deer trophies were: Harvey Eady getting his 6 point buck the first week of bowhunting season in Wisconsin, Earl Bird of Wauconda for his Wisconsin doe, and John Zawaski and Joe Kozial of Chicago each arrowed 2 deer, one each in Wisconsin and Illinois. The game got underway, and after the first quarter had ended, it looked as if the seniors (coached by Kathy Barry and Betsy Stephenson) would have no problem, as they took a commanding 14-4 lead. However, in the second and third quarters, the juniors managed to hold the seniors' scoring even with theirs, and at the end of the third quarter the score was 28-19. With about seven minutes to go in the game, the seniors' high scorer Deb Mahon, fouled out. This left them with no substitutes and unfortunately two of the remaining players already had four fouls on them. The juniors, with their momentum built up, began to make basket after basket, while holding down the of­ fensive efforts of the deter­ mined senior team. With four minutes left, senior Helen • Coast Guard I -- -* ' Ericksen fouled out, leaving a one-man advantage on the court for the juniors. However, fine defensive skill shown by Roni Bierman, Dawn Ewald, Sue Hoffman, and Nancy Wagner held the juniors and with 14 seconds left in the game,Sue Hoffman hit her shot for the clinching two points. The final score of this exciting and nerveracking game was 33-30. Representing the junior team were Pat Estis, Sharal Koenigseder, Shirley Meurer, Donna Munyon, Kim Pinkstaff, Annette Pintozzi, Beth Stein- sdoerfer, and Laurie Swanson. The junior team was coached by Val Rode. The teams were given a lot of support, not only from the audience but their respective cheerleaders. These girls, including seniors Danette Crawford and Debbie Leonard; juniors Karen Covalt, Colleen Rogers, Jaye Shappert, and Char Weingart; sophomores Cathy Byers, Kathy Nellesen Felicia York; and freshmen Kristy Day, Maureen Hall, Clare Higgins, Doreen Sturm, and Sue Wickenkamp did a fine job of cheering their teams on and entertaining the audience as well. J-D Trucking On Strike Spree In County Bowling News I Boy scout packs 16 and 99 participated in Project 1,000,000. The scouts attended a one lesson class on safe boating by the United States Coast Guard Auxiliary Flotilla 6-6 of Wonder Lake at the J.F. Kennedy School in Shiller Park. Project 1,000,000 is the training of 1,000,000 scouts in the use of personal flotation devices, fire extinguishers, and safe boating habits through the cooperation of Commandant of United States Coa$t Guard, the National Commodore of the United States Coast Guard Auxiliary and the National Office of Boy * Scouts of America.
