Karl Mundt Farm Bureau Continues Attack Against RTA Vote One of the most serious drawbacks of the RTA referendum to be voted March 19 concerns the fact that an entirely new form of govern ment would be established. This was the chaise made by the Farm Bureau. "Under this referendum a sif-county governmental unit with extremely broad powers would be established," explains Ed Meier, Jr., Algonquin farmer who heads the McHenry County Farm Bureau com mittee opposing this referen dum. "We urge a large voter turnout and ask them to vote no," says Meier. "Many- reasons have been voiced in opposition to this RTA referendum, "and it is significant, I believe, that legislators of this area are working hard to inform the public of the drawbacks and asking for a no vote also." Meier said the six-county body would be a unique authority overlapping county lines with power of eminent domain and not be subject to the regulation of the Illinois Commerce commission. In a talk at the Farm Bureau last week, Rep. R. Bruce Waddell, Dundee legislator who is one of the most critical of this legislative boondoggle, revealed the cost to the "typical McHenry county family" has increased com pared with the estimate given in early January. At that time, costs were figured at $82.75. Now the tqtal has risen to at least $134 a year. Here's what's included: 5 per cent sales tax on motor fuel, part of the state sales tax siphoned from General Revenue and given to the RTA, and $14 license fee diversion on Chicago residents to the RTA., "You can't come to the legislator and ask for help if this referendum passes," Waddell warns, "because of the extreme authority granted under its provision. Also, the board will have the power to condemn property for RTA use and can tax parking facilities." Farm Bureau is moving into new offices, and with this move comes a new telephone num ber. To call Farm Bureau, call Woodstock 338-1520, effective March 15. Shift to the new office in volves moving the executive secretary, Larry Harris, and the Farm Bureau office per sonnel into the space inside the main door to the left, the area occupied by the Extension Service until Farm Bureau needed the room for its own service tp farmers of McHenry county. Try putting a scoop of ice cream into your cream before whipping it, and this will not only add flavor, but will keep the cream chilled as you whip it. Q. How can I repair the stitching of some moccasins? A. Pick up the broken threads, then sew with heavy cotton or linen thread coated with beeswax, threading this through the old holes. Q. How can I treat some tarnished brass? A. You can usually do an excellent job of removing tarnish or corrosion by rubbing over the metal with a lemon rind that has been dipped in salt. Q. What is an efficient way to apply oil or water-stains to raw wood? A. Try using a cellulose sponge instead of a brush.
