Membership chairman, Mrs. David (Doris) Henken, was in charge of the dinner and ^warded the membership committee with charms of musical instruments, as the theme of the year is "Join Stringers Symphonette- Harmonize More In '74". If you buy convenience foods, compare the kind of time you are "buying." Sometimes you save "active " time, time spent in preparing food, such as chopping, mixing, and cleanup. Sometimes you save "inactive" time, time in which you don't have to concentrate on the food while it's being prepared. You can do something else while the food is baking, thawing, chilling or simmering, Miss Frank explains. You still would be wise to become well-acquainted with store brands where you shop frequently. Store brands usually cost less than name brands-and they're similar in quality, she adds. With food prices changing so rapidly, the food-buying guidelines and habits we've used as a basis for wise shopping may no longer hold true, says Pat Frank, McHenry county Extension adviser, Home Economics. One food-buying rule-of- thumb has been, "You pay less per unit of food when you buy the larger size." Now it will pay you to compare prices to be sure. Prices may change relatively more on one size than on another, she explains. You should also compare prices on the different forms of a food. Foods which used to be cheaper in one form may suddenly be more expensive than they were in another form. For example, dry beans may have increased in price more rapidly than beans already cooked and in the can. Also, food which used to cost less or very little more in a convenience form may sud denly be cheaper to make yourself, notes Miss Frank. For example, the next time you shop, compare prices between h o m e m a d e , f r o z e n , refrigerated, and ready-to-eat bread and rolls. Although price concern when products, other factors should also be considered. For in stance, check the label for nutritive value. When you have a choice, choose enriched or whole grain cereal foods in stead of unenriched; iodized invited after the dinner for dancing.-The wonderful dinner was prepared and served by the members of the McHenry Rifle Squad, with Bernie Matchen and Ed Reid in charge.
