U.S.S. CHICAGO San Diego Navy Yard Brings Happy Memories (by Father Wm. 0. Hanner) San Diego, Calif., is a Navy port. Here come atomic subs, cruisers, aircraft carriers, seagoing tugs and destroyers. Uiis I had to see. My old Navy days at the academy at An napolis were strong up on me and the smell of salt water spurred me on. There is a two- hour cruise about the harbor you can buy so one afternoon we sallied forth to embark on this glimpse of anything painted Navy gray. The trip goes clear out to Point Loma lighthouse. You can feel the swell and lift of the ocean for you touch the edge of the Pacific. It was a clear day. The sky was flecked with clouds through which the sun shone to diamond sparkle the wavelets. A good sized cruiser lay-off to one side out in the channel. Why there? Was she under way? There seemed to be a bow wave but it was so small I couldn't be sure. Thai I saw the ensign was not flying from the stern but was at the main. This was a sure sign she was under way. I was all messed up with feelings of awe, nostalgia, patriotism, and joy. I was near a Navy ship under way. Hie skipper of our excursion boat spoke over the loud speaker. "This is the U.S.S. Chicago off to your left. She has been re-equipped to launch and track missiles. She is putting out to sea for exercises." We got very close to her. I took the picture shown. You can see the ensign flying from the main; you can see signal flags; you can see her boats secured for sea; her radar finder turns. The Navy at Sea. I was taken back fifty-two years today when I had had sea duty. Hie most interesting bit of equipment shown are the two huge trackers aft. There are .also two forward. They look like search lights but they are not. They are the reason for the ship. They trace and track and maybe even help direct missiles. You love the Navy but you don't remember all the things about her nor how equipment works. We can see the crew about their tasks. Our country 's arm. who controls the sea controls nations. I snapped a dozen pictures. What a sight! Hie Chicago passed us and - stood out to sea. I turned back to the harbor sights. Ye gods! Look! A fiat top! Sure enough, now also plainly under way and standing to sea behind us was the USS Constellation. Not the biggest but pretty impressive she was following the Chicago to the open waters. My pictures were not good here. The light was not as clear. Thoughts of the Coral Sea and Midway battles chased through my head. A flat top is the mightiest ship on top of water today. Battleships are passe and gone even as sail. Today the battlewagon carries planes that strike far from her decks at an enemy not even seen. Here are some of our first lines of defense. The Constellation passed us too and soon both ships were fading. They were going out for naval exercises together. We continued on our harbor trip. We passed the atomic subs with their smooth round tops, we passed lines of destroyers, we saw the mothball fleet. Returning from the trip we passed a submarine rescue ship, handy for an emergency - like an extra tire on a car. There were supply ships and oilers and the gleaming white of the Coast Guard cutter at anchor. There were ships with strange looking equipment on them at whose uses I could only guess. Here on the southwest corner of the nation is one of our great naval bases. Two years ago we had seen the great naval base in the Northwest Bremerton Navy yard. I had seen the ones at Boston and Key West -- at each corner of bur land they lie ready - something we in the. Midwest hardly ever remember. - Well, we turned back to our pier. We passed a few feet from a harbor buoy. There on the buoy lay a seal all soft and cuddly looking. He raised his head in lolling interest as I snapped him for a memento. Life for him was a warm pelt, cool water and a few fish. You'd like San Diego. PAGE 11- PLAINDEALER-WEDNESDAY, MARCH 20, 1974 Terrible Woman! TAX FACTS (This is the fourth of five ar ticles on 1973 federal income tax returns.) By Harvey L. Coustan (Taxation Committee Chair man, Illinois CPA Society) Traditionally the policy has been that a taxpayer can deduct from his income the costs incurred in obtaining that income. This is reflected in many varied deductions or exemptions permitted on tax returns. Hie ordinary and necessary costs of business travel and entertainment are deductible, for example, if one is not reimbursed for these by an employer. All you have to be able to prove to Uncle Sam is that the expenses were directly related to the earning of in come. One expense connected with the earning of income that cannot be deducted is the cost of getting to and from work, except in the case of a worker who must carry heavy or bulky tools or materials to and from the job, in which case he might be able to deduct car costs. Even here, though, the car costs are not deductible if the individual would use his car anyhow, even if he didn't have a load to carry. A working taxpayer who incurs expenses for the care of young children in order to be able to go to work can in some cases deduct those costs. Undo* certain conditions, if one has moved his place of residence because of a change in his place of work the costs of making the move are deduc tible. Professional fees paid to lawyers, brokers or CPAs for guidance or assistance in such fields as investments and taxes can be deducted, along with the cost of a safety deposit box for the protection of securities, as well as subscriptions to in vestment advice services, financial publications, etc. All are considered as having contributed to obtaining in come or managing income- producing property. If a taxpayer owns income- producing property - a sec Mid house, for example - he can deduct the costs of maintaining and renting it out, along with. payments for interest and taxes, which are deductible in any case. However, if he himself, lives in the second house part of the year, ex penses other than interest and taxes may be deductible wily up to the amount of income the property produces.
