The games will again be co-sponsored by the Chicago Park > District, Mentally Retarded Olympian Program and Joseph P. Kennedy Jr. Foundation. Uiis year the sponsors hope to involve 10,000 mentally handicapped athletes in the Illinois area and state meets and thousands mere in local programs. liie purposes of the Special Olympics are many but as founder Mrs. Anne Burke explains, "The Special Olympics is the first officially organized physical recreation program for the retarded which gives each participant a chance to develop physically and spiritually and strive for individual recognition. A competitive atmosphere was created to promote the concept but everyone is a winner in the Special Olympics." This year, there will be four area meets conducted. The Southern meets will be run by Dr. William Freeburg of Southern Illinois university, in Carbondale; The Central meets will be conducted by Mr. Jerry Menz, Director of Decatur Park District, in Decatur ; The Northern meets will be conducted by Mrs. Pat Condon, Illinois Special Olympics State Director, and the staff of the Chicago Park District; and The Western meet, a newly developed program will be run by Mr. Hiram Brownwell of the Warren Achievement Center, in Monmouth. The area meets will be held in April and May and top medal winners from each area will then represent their schools and communities at the Illinois State Special Olympics on July 11 and 12 in Chicago. The Illinds State games will be a doubly exciting experience for both athletes and guests, for in addition to the athletic activities and party festivities, the games will once again take place in Soldier field. 2-Speed. One can see we have a long way to go to reach our goal if we are to help all these deserving but long neglected people, and with continued support, we can do it," he concluded. The Special Olympics is now an international program involving all 50 states, Canada, France, Mexico and several European countries. McHenry Swimmers Honored At Banquet By Dick Rabbitt The Mc Hairy high school swimmers were honored at a pot luck dinner last Thursday evening at West Campus cafeteria. The ever improving McHenry tankers won two invitational meets during the past season. They won the Stevenson and Libertyville Invitationals. Two awards were given: The Most Improved Swimming award wait to Erv Gall, and the Most Valuable went to Vance Roth. Both boys are juniors and will be back next season. Varsity awards were presented to the following: Scott Topp, Vance Roth, Kevin Weiss, Mark Koerber, Jon Sek. Erv Gall, Randy Watkins, Lowell Kively, Guy Garn, Brian Fetzer, Bruce Fetzer, Jim Nelson. Nine sophomores received Minor "M" from Coach Bill Noyes. They were as follows: Bill Nickelson, Chris Goetschel, Tory Rachel, Tony LaGreca, Bill Mahon, Murray Alford, Les Sharp, Rich Jackson and Gary Grimm on pre. Congratulations are in order to Coaches Shanahan and Noyes for the fine record the swimmers had this season. With the ever increasing popularity of the spori, more boys will be participating, and maybe some day we will have a state champ in swimming. Jim set a new all time Huron college individual scoring record for a single game when he scored 40 pts in a 82 to 81 loss to Dakota Wesley an. He was the leading scorer in the S.D.I.C. Conference with a 29.2 average. In the 12 conference games Jim scored 30 or more points in 6 of them. During the past season he sewed 776 pts for an overall average of 26.9 as the Tribe finished with a 21 and 8 record. The 6'7" Center wound up his college career by playing in the N.A.I.A. tournament in Kansas City. Jim's 3 year total was 1324 points good for 3rd place on the school's all time list. Jim a transfer student from Western Illinois university played only 3 years at Huron. Jim was All Conference, and all District 12, which comprised the states of South Dakota, Montana, and North Dakota. Jim is married to the forma Janet Lawson, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Tom Lawson of McHenry. Speaking in behalf of Coach Ken Ludwig (Jim's high school coach) and the rest of the "Warrior" fans we wish to extend to Jim our heartiest congratualtions. JOHNSBURG'S BOY'S LEAGUE Johnsburg's Boy's League baseball registration will be held Saturday, March 23, at l p.m. at the J.A. Bush school gym - Boys, ages 8 through 15 are eligible. At the annual awards and dinner dance in Rockford, Rear Commodore John Covich presented the Wonder Lake Flotilla with the following awards: Accepting the Public Education Trophy, for conducting safe boating classes for 645 children and 135 adults was Public Education Offica Hank Opensky. Accepting the Courtesy Boat Examination Trophy, for examining 177 boats, was Carea* Coordination Officer John Bohac for Courtesy Examination Offica Charles Beccard who could not be present. Accepting the Public Relations Trophy, for development of the "Tow Line" column in the Woodstock Daily Sentinel with 102 news articles was Public Relations Offica Eugaie Kaisa. Accepting the Membership Training Award, for all members qualified as instructors and boat e x a m i n e r s , w a s Communications Officer Bill Haupt for Membership Training Offica John Paul who could not be present. Accepting the Operations Trophy, for 33 days unda coast guard patrol orders was Vice Flotilla Commander Ted Boswell. Rear Commodore John Covich then presented the flotilla with a special award for being the first flotilla to win all division awards. This beautiful trophy was accepted for the flotilla by Flotilla Commander Clifford Mason. WOMEN WANTED! The United States Coast Guard is looking toward "women- power" to meet the personnel demands needed to provide first rate service to the public. Forty women from across the country were sworn into the Coast Guard on Jan. 14 of this year, becoming the first women to ever enter the regular enlisted ranks of the nation's oldest seagoing sa*vice - now the Coast Guard is seeking to increase its number of women enlistees to 190 by June 30. Tlie door opened for women to integrate into the regular ranks when President Nixon signed a Public Law abolishing the women's reserve program in December of last year. At that time, the Coast Guard offered only training in a limited number of carea* fields including: Photojournalism, Yeoman, Storekeeper, and Musician. Howeva, that list has been increased to offa training in such shipboard skills as: Boatswain Mate, Telephone Technic ian , Radioman and Electronics Technician. Coast Guard representatives have programs available Which will guarantee school training in one of the above mentioned fields. They also have the facts . about enlistment programs that do not guarantee schooling, but offa on-the-job training at one of the many Coast Guard installations around the world.
