TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of April 7, 1949) A passerby in Ringwood detected flames emanating from the roof of the E.E. Whiting home on Monday morning and notified the local fite department. Considerable damage was reported. Cause of the fire was believed to have been a spark from the Whiting chimney pr from a passing train, the home being close to the railroad Jrack. Ralph C, Whitehead seaman apprentice, :AU.S.N. of 127 Center street, McHenry, has been graduated from the Hospital Corps School, Great Lakes, 111. Herman E. Lacy of McHenry recently sold eleven purebred Aberdeen-Angus cows to Bruhnke and Wise of West McHenry. A bulletin board has been installed in the local city hall on which coming events may be placed by various community organizations. Harry G. Grosmann, 81 years old, a resident of Island Lake for seventeen years, died by hanging in the garage near his home April 5, while despondent over poor health. Mr. and Mrs. Fred Lawrence and family have purchased the Stanley Schaefer home recently completed on south Green street. Mr. Lawrence is superintendent of brick construction on the Green street bridge. The A.K. Thompsons of Wonder Lake began the long journey home after spending a most enjoyable vacation in Hawaii. The Thompsons spent three weeks there. Joan Biggers of Wonder Lake was selected as McHenry's representative to attend Girls State next summer. TEN YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of Aprils, 1964) Mrs. Helen M. Johnson, 48, of Spring Grove, was found dead in her home on April l. A wedding of local interest was solemnized April 4 when Miss Kathleen Anne Hunt of Hebron became the bride of Mr. Lawrence M. Cynowa of Lakemoor. Rev. Fr. James Vanderpod officiated at the Mass. Kenneth Marsh of McHenry has earned academic distinction on the dean's list at DePauw university where he is a sophomore. A daughter was born March 30, to Mr. and Mrs. John Mahoney. Now that registration is over for Little League players the next important date is April 19, for tryouts at the Little League field. All aluminum evaporators which because of their formability, allows greater freedom in the design of refrigeration . and air conditioning systems, have been develped by Modine Manufacturing company, Racine, Wis. They are manufactured at the Ringwood chemical plant. McHenry area artists were listed among winners in the McHenry County Town and Country Art show. Among the winners were Gertrude Gladstone for "Landscape" and "Caravelle", James Pearson for "Bird" and Lori Wilhelm for "Winter Lost". The planning committee is anxious to learn the whereabouts of Phyllis Boling, Carla Dietz, Pat Haynes, Robert Johnson, Scott Johnson, Scott King, Tom Kuntz, George Lissy, Donald Mahal and Philip Morris. JOSEPH MEYER PLAN TOUR - Joseph Meyer, son of Harold Meyer, 5114 W. Rt. 120, is a member of the concert chorale and the concert band of North Central Bible college, Minneapolis, Minn. Both groups are under the direction of the Rev. Robert H. Cilke, chairman of the Department of Music. The 30- voice chorale will present sacred concerts in Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, and Iowa from April 7 to 14, and the 35- member band will present sacred concerts in Wisconsin, Indiana, and Michigan from April 27 to May 5. Joseph is a freshman majoring in Bible and Pastoral Studies. Golden Eagle Passports Are Campers' Service The McHenry post office will again issue golden eagle passports for calendar year 1974 as a special service to campers and other outdoor enthusiasts. The pass is good for entrance to designated federal areas operated by the U.S. Department of the Interior's National park service. The passport is available for purchase at all first and second class post offices. "Golden age passports, issued free of charge to any person 62 years old or older during 1973 at the post office, will not be issued by post offices this year", Postmaster Leroy M. Smith said. "The Department of Interior has decided that golden age passports will be issued at national park entry points only", Postmaster Smith said. The golden eagle passports , whiqh are available at the post ^offiqe cover national park systi&i" entrance fees at designated 4 areas for the purchaser and all persons accompanying him in a non­ commercial vehicle used for private recreation purposes. Postmaster Smith pointed out that the golden eagle passport is valid only for entrance fees, does not cover federal special recreation use fees, and is non-transferable. The golden eagle passport does not cover charges by private concessionaires operating within federal recreation areas.
