May 1,1974) Law Enforcement Agencies Join In May Observance The McHenry Sheriff's department joins with all other law enforcement "agencies in pointing out th%t May 1 is celebrated nationally as Law day. Ferris E. Lucas, executive director of the ' National Sheriffs' association in Washington, D.C., in a letter to the McHenry County Sheriff's department, emphasized the importance of Law day in America. The role of the citizen in American history has been one of participation-exercising the right to vote, the right of free speech and the right to be secure in life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. Sheriff Tyrrell stresses the role every citizen can play in this fight against lawlessness. The community has been effectively participating in a National Neighborhood Watch program-a U.S. Department of J u s t i c e , L E A A - - f u n d e d program which is designed to bring into every home steps that will reduce the threat to the property and person of each citizen. Citizens sharing together the responsibility of security in the community make a firm commitment to insure everyone's rights. "McHenry County Sheriff's department is working hard with all law enforcement agencies to provide leadership and guidance, and to bring the local problems of security to your attention." Ferris Lucas continues to point out that, "Law day provides a time to reaffirm our determination to protect our basic rights, to work together, to continue the excellent work, and to never cease in our vigil." An Aug. 16, 1975, wedding is planned. by Pearl Cooper Each year the American Legion auxiliary throughout the national organization studies and aids a country outside the United States, bringing a closer understanding, relationship and harmony between us and that country. The auxiliary "CARE" program this year is the Republic of Korea. Mrs. Lydia Fenner is Foreign Relations chairman for the McHenry unit and sees that the CARE box is passed at all of the meetings. Pennies and dimes make dollars. " Two projects are being sponsored for the Republic of Korea. The first entitled "Lights of Friendship" will help provide? electricity to isolated villages in Korea. This is not a luxury but an integral part of a cooperative effort rural people are making to improve living conditions for everyone. The second project is especially for Junior members (those under 18 years of age), and Mrs. Eleanore Reid, Junior Activities chairman of the McHenry unit, reports that the Juniors are asked to raise funds to provide scholarships for rural children in Korea to give them new hope and a better future. These are agricultural scholarships in the amounts of $60 for a short course at the American-Korean Foundation farm; and $430 for a long term scholarship. Junior members are striving to make possible either one whole smaller scholarship from each group, or to make a substantial contribution to the larger one. CANCER CRUSADE Because of illness among some Cancer Crusade volunteer workers, every home will not be visited. Those who would like to make a contribution, and have not been called upon to do so, are asked to send a check to the city chairman, Catherine Weber, 3405 Pearl street, McHenry.
