PAGE 13 - PLAINDEALER - WEDNESDAY, MAY 8,1974 Twice Told Tales FORTY YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of May 3 1934) Memorial poppies which the women of the American Legion auxiliary will distribute here on Poppy Day, May 26, have been a means of providing employment to hundreds of disabled World War veterans through the winter and spring months according to Mrs. Eleanor Althoff, rehabilitation chairman of the local auxiliary unit. McHenry will have a Home Bureau unit which will meet on the fourth Friday of each month at the home of a member. Through the efforts of Mrs. E.E. Denman, a sufficient number of members have signed up to constitute a unit. Mrs. Edith Hayes and family moved the first of the week front an apartment in Justen's hotel to the Cristy house on Waukegan street. McHenry fire department answered two calls over the weekend the first one being at the home of Dr. and Mrs. J. Cravfer where the barn in which baby chicks were housed had caught fire and about one hundred baby chicks were killetfby the fire. The other fire was the old green house owned by W.M. Crouch on U.S. 12. It was destroyed. "Rex", a pet dog which has been with the M.J. Walsh family for the past fourteen years no longer will be found about the premises as it was found necessary to chloroform the little fellow. Fr. A.J. Neidert, 67, passed away at his home in Johnsburg, May 4, following an extended illness which often caused hospitalization in recent years. McHenry high school's first blue ribbon in state final vocal competition was realized last Saturday when the boys chorus won top honors at Charleston, 111. They sang "Down The Open Road" by Haney and "Dance My Comrades" by Bennett. One of the* prettiest spring weddings to take place in McHenry was solemnized April 30 when Miss Muriel Ayers of Ita, Wis., became the le of Mr. Herman Etten. le double ring ceremony was performed at St. Mary's church. A traveling museum, the Museumobile, will visit McHenry schools May 16 it was announced this week by Roland McCannon, McHenry county superintendent of schools. The unique traveling museum from the Illinois state museum in Springfield displays twenty-one exhibits. The exhibits show Illinois minerals, mammals, insects, flowers and art, Illinois Indian life and scenes of how Illinois looked during the coal age forest and ice age periods. * Rev. F.A. Graham, Methodist Minister who lived until recently in Oakhurst subdivision, McHenry, has retired from the ministry and has purchased a home at Prophetstown. His retirement comes after fifty years of church service. Wonder Lake firemen have been attempting to learn the origin of a fire last Monday night which burned a vacant house on the old Marsh farm. Six Junior boys at MCHS have been selected by a vote of the faculty to attend Illini Boys State next June. They are James DeVos, Vic Beck, Gary Lockwood, James Anderson, Wayne Hiller and Richard Smith. McHenry Shores couple, Mr. and Mrs. Ed. J. Burgstaller, left by plane last week to attend the World's Fair in New York. It is an all expense paid trip won last December in the second annual holiday promotion of the Chamber of Commerce. Donald Herdrich has been initiated into Scabard and Blade national honorary student military society at Marquette university, Milwaukee. Miss Nancy J. Nichols, reading specialist for the McHenry public schools, has accepted an invitation to teach three professional courses on the campus of Platteville State College and Institute of Technology at Platteville, Wis. FORTY YEARSAGO (Taken from the files of May 10, 1934) Postmaster Krause, in behalf of the Married Men's club, requested permission of the board for the club to play ball in the park two nights a week. Permission was granted by the council. Fire destroyed the tool house and its contents at the McHenry Country club Wednesday morning about 2 o'clock. The entire equipment used at the golf course was destroyed including two tractors, a model T Ford, small mowers and other tools and machinery. More than 3,000 unemployed McHenry County men and women seeking jobs are registered at present at the county headquarters of national reemployment service in the court house. Mr. and Mrs. Dwight Williams of Jackson, Miss., are parents of a son, Jack Dwight, born May 5. Mrs. Williams was formerly Miss Opal Cooley of this city. Mr. and Mrs. George Jones are now living with Mr. and Mrs. Albert Purvey and will open a tavern in the Hunter building on Green street. The Joe Williams family is quarantined with scarlet fever and whooping cough. L.A. Erickson, McHenry merchant, was named to represent the independent merchants at a meeting of eighty-three merchant food distributors of McHenry county. TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of May 12, 1949) A pioneer resident of the Ringwood community Fred Wiedrich, Sr., 75, passed away at the Woodstock hospital, May 8. Mrs. C.W. Goodell and Warren Jones attended the annual State Federation of Music club convention held last week at the Abraham Lincoln hotel in Springfield. Warren was guest soloist as a representative of the young artists of the state. He was accompanied by Mrs. Goodell. Mrs. Gwen Bieschke attended the Richmond junior prom where she reigned as queen. She was guest of the prom king, Thomas Bower. A very beautiful wedding ceremony was solemnized at Crystal Lake's St. Mary -by-the Lake Episcopal church, May 6, when Miss Alyce Bradley of McHenry became the bride of Mr. George Brda of this city. Thirty-five members of the Young People's Athletic club enjoyed their annual banquet at the Villa Hotel Resort. Leon Grosby acted as toastmaster. Calling on the officers and the club's director, L.J. McCracken, for short talks. Honored guest of the evening was Bob Schultz, a charter member of the association nine years ago, who for the past eight years has been confined to St. Luke's hospital following injuries suffered in an accident. TEN YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of May 14, 1964) Fire which caused estimated damage of several hundred dollars, broke out in Mike's Fireside Tavern on Rt. 31 in Ringwood Wednesday morning. The business is owned by Antra and Mike Wieser. Fire Chief Ed Justen said a transformer on a neon sign outside the tavern shorted and the resulting fire spread to the building. An intensive seven day campaign to raise $10,000 to assure the start of construction on McHenry's library addition met with success. This most recent program of the Rotary club came Thursday evening when members gathered at the McHenry Country club for their annual anniversary dinner. At the dinner Mr. Harry Dean, drive chairman, presented William Bolger, president of the library fund with a $10,000 check. Two junior students at MCHS were announced as winners of the annual music scholarships to Egyptian Music camp at DuQuoin, 111. They are Cathy Ruth and Rodney Mauch.
