New Brochure Points Up Eye Hazards On Farm Eye injuries among Illinois' farm population have taken an alarming upward trend in recent years. Today the chances are one in ten that a farmer will suffer an eye accident or an eye injury during the coming year serious enough to require die attention of a physician. This fact was disclosed by statistics recently compiled by the Illinois Society for the Prevention of Blindness, the non-profit organization which for the past fifty-eight years has been working to reduce the risk of unnecessary blindness throughout the State. Increased mechanization and the growing use of highly toxic liquid chemicals in agriculture were cited by the Society for the dangerous increase in eye accidents. To help cut down the toll of farm eye injuries, the Society has published a brochure pointing out the hazards in farm operations and detailing first aid procedures to follow if an eye accident occurs. EntiUed "Chances are One in Ten that You Will Suffer an Eye Accident This Year," the brochure warns farmers about the dangers of flying objects, chaff, dust and other debris that can cause injuries to the eyes. "But possibly the greatest dangers to your eyesight," the brochure states, "are the liquid chemical fertilizers and insecticides, particularly the compressed ammonia types that are the most likely to cause partial or total blindness if they come in contact with your eyes." More than one third of farm- related eye injuries were caused by burns from fertilizers, pesticides, and liquid chemical mixtures, the Society estimates. Failure to wear eye protection and the use of worn-out tools that shred off metal slivers were other major causes of eye injuries. The Illinois Society is hopeful that many Illinois farmers will have an opportunity to read and profit from the brochure. Copies are being distributed through farm organizations a n d a g r i c u l t u r a l manufacturing companies. Copies of the booklet may be obtained free of charge from the Illinois Society for the Prevention of Blindness, 220 South State Street, Chicago 60604. j%co (Taken frorft the files of June 1964) May 23 was the wedding day of Miss Bonnie O'Brien of Iroquois Trail, McHenry, and Mr. Lyle Krieger of Island Lake.
