Lakemoor-Lilymoor Alma Hueckstaedt 385-5689 4-H Group Works On June Recycling Drive Recycling, rather than throwing away bottles, cans and newspapers, is a help to the environment and is becoming a part of the way of life for more and more of McHenry's citizens. Since the beginning of this year each month has seen an average of 20 tons of bundled newspapers, magazines and cardboard brought to the McHenry Market Place. The amount of gl$ss and cans brought in is also on the increase. The McHenry County Defenders and the McLakewood 4-H club would like to make those new to recycling aware of the following guidelines: pottles must be washed and have lids and plastic or metal rims removed. Labels need not be removed from bottles. Separate by color if possible. Do not bring dishes, electric bulbs, etc. Cans must be washed and labels removed. All cans, including pop cans, must be flattened. It is impossible to find storage space for unflattened cans (nor do plants want to ship them). The McHenry County Defenders would like to remind everyone that the environment would be helped greatly if returnable bottles were purchased rather than beverages in cans. Aluminum cans, TV dinner trays, and clean aluminum foil are accepted also. Aluminum items should be kept separate from the steel cans. Newspapers make up the majority of the paper brought in. Make sure no plastic bags are included, and that bundles are securely tied in both directions in stacks that can be easily handled by strong children. Magazines, flattened cereal boxes, catalogues, and advertising mail can all be bundled together. Corrugated cardboard, flattened and tied, makes Up another group of paper products. This month members of the McLakewood 4-H club will be cooperating with the McHenry County Defenders to provide the labor for the recycling drive. Paper will be collected from 9 until 5 at the McHenry Market Place Saturday, June 15, and bottles and cans will be collected from 9 until noon. Anyone needing rope with which to tie bundles for future Plan Supper Benefit For CMI Defense Program Meetings of this group take place every Tuesday evening at 7:30 p.m. at the village hall in Lakemoor. Anyone interested in joining, may do so and they will be very welcome. Last night's meeting consisted of a men's working crew that assembled wooden street barricades. On the first Saturday in August a spaghetti supper will be served from 5 p.m. until 8 or 9 p.m. Tickets will be available within a short time. I wiH give more information on this in later columns. Proceeds will go for civil defense equipment. Make your long range plans now to go out for a spaghetti supper. Sometime during the evening a movie on tornadoes will be shown. I have seen the film and I would recommend everyone in the area go and see that film. PARENTS FOR YOUTH Members are looking for interested adults who would like to get involved with the young people of your community. You do not have to be a parent to get into it with the young people. All it really takes is a real interest. Call Edna Garbacz at 385-2744 or Diane Murphy at 385-5107. Quite a while has gone by since the club had their Easter egg hunt and they tell me it was very successful and the members would like to thank all those who took part in it to make it a successful project. All youth and parents are invited to participate in a beach drives may pick up what they need the day of the drive. There will be a good supply on hand. Anyone having questions regarding the recycling drive is encouraged to call a McHenry C o u n t y D e f e n d e r s representative before the day of the drive at 385-8512. clean-up and a car wash on June 15. "Are you interested in the youth of your community?" This is the topic to be discussed on June 18 at a garden party sponsored by the Parents for Youth Club. It will be held at 1 p.m., at the home of Mrs. Diane Murphy at 103 Sheridan road. This paragraph is for those who don't wish to get involved but yet take time to criticize those that do. It is not fair to those who try to find things for the young people to do and by doing so the kids do not get into mischief or more serious trouble. Instead of knocking what the club members are doing, become one of them and you may get a lot of satisfaction out of helping and planning activities for the youngsters. Don't fight them - join 'em.
