spurgeons PAGE 6 - PLAINDEALER-WEDNESDAY, JUNE 12, 1974 McCullom Lake Gerry Milbratz 385-8543 Advise Swimmers Take Precaution Against Parasites Test of the lake recently showed the presence of an abundance of the type of snail, known to cause "swimmer's itch." Although there have been no cases reported at our beach this year, conditions are such, that the potential to develop the "itch" is there. The beach remains open, but those who wish to swim are advised to take precautionary measures. This includes avoiding weedy areas in the water. Most importantly, swimmers should towel dry» themselves immediately after leaving the water. Thk parasites which cause the itch, burrow into the skin when it is dry. Towel drying right after getting out of the water will wipe off an parasites before they get a chance to enter the skin. Treatment of the water was made June 6, and plans are to begin algae treatment, next week. It is hoped the water treatibfljbt will keep cases of "swimmer's Itch", down to a minimum, or possibly eliminate them altogether this year. Board members say the majority of the problems are due to the rainy weather of the past few weeks. Excessive amounts of rain have caused most of the new sand to run into the water and also contributed to the tremendous weed growth on the beach plus the muddy condition of the park. It is impossible to correct the situation while the rainy weather continues, but residents are assured, restoration will begin again, when weather permits. Spring Grove Eva Freund 675-2135 David Kagen Ordained Deacn In Vatican City With the sounding of trumpets and the peal of organs, forty-two young men from the United States marched into the Chapel of the Immaculate Conception of the Pontifical North American College in Vatican City on May 9, 1974, to be ordained deacons of the Roman Catholic Church. David Kagan, son of Dr. and Mrs. L.L. Kagan, 1920 Main Street, Spring Grove, was one of the candidates. Each candidate was called and presented by name and diocese by the Vice-Rector, and each man responded by replying that he was ready and willing to be ordained. At this time, the ordaining bishop, The Most Reverend James A. Hickey, Rector, announced his intention of ordaining these men and asked the audience to show a sign of approval and consent. In a most stirring scene, the congregation gave the young men a standing REMINDERS Beach Gals meeting- Wesnesday June 12, 7:30 p.m. Ladies of the Lake meeting- Thursday June 13,, 8 p.m. ovation with tumultuous applause. The Bishop then gave a brief instruction and examination and asked certain promises of the candidates. Placing their hands in the Bishop's hands they promised obedience to their own bishops and their successors. During this time the "Lorica of St. Patrick", and "The Law of Love" was sung. Next came the Invitation to Prayer, which was the Litany of the Saints from the Maronite Liturgy, and included the patron saints of those to be ordained. The Laying of Hands by Bishop Hickey on the head of each candidate took place at this point; In the ancient Christian tradition, this act signifies the descent of the Holy Spirit as at the first Pentecost. This action, with the prayer of Consecration by the Bishop, constituted the orders the men received to become deacons. The new deacons were then vested with the stole and climatic. • While the choir and congregation sang "My God, Accept My Heart This Day" and "Hymn of St. Patrick", the Bishop presented the Book of Gospels, the chief tool of his ministry, to each new deacond and said: "Receive the gospel of Christ, whose herald you are. Following the ordination, the new deacons, their parents, relatives and friends were feted at a reception and dinner at the North American College. The day preceding the ordination, the forty-two young deacons, their parents and relatives were among those in attendance at the Papal audience in the new audience hall at St. Peter's. As the American Deacons were introduced, the Holy Father, Pope Paul VI extended his congratulations and had a special message for them concerning their ministry. A delightful episode took place as the Pope was being borne from the hall, he reached out and blessed Mary Lou Kagan, Dave's youngest niece. After this little Mary Lou was quite disappointed when the Pope wasn't present at all future gatherings.
