BROWNIE FLY-UP (,i PICNIC • Each year the Girl Scout troop and Brownie troop scheduled a picnic to initiate Brownies into the Girl Scout . troop. This year only one Brownie, Terry Abbink, will i fly-up to Girl Scout status. The two troops held their picnic at the Lakewood Forest Preserve in Wauconda on May 21. Terry was accompanied by her „ mother, Vi Abbink. The other girls in Brownie troop 409 are ; Julie Bartkus, Michelle Campbell, Roseann Catanzaro, Rhonda Coburn, Janine Cody, Bobbette Hjarpe, Lisa Ledford, Becky Lonergan, Christine Minter, Shelley Reid, Elizabeth Siatta, Gina Tannert, Connie Tomlinson, Alicie Anderson, and Michelle Canady. Carol Campbell and Peggy Ayres are to be thanked for their leadership with this group the past year. The Girl Scouts in troop 478 were as follows: Dale Williams, Angela Catanzaro, Cindy and Doreen Rasbaugh, Jeanna Boettcher, Ann Stackhouse, Chris Connell, Priscilla Kaspryzk, Debby Bartkus, Suzie Bielski, Cheri Bruser, Noreen DeWitt, Diana Gregg, Kim Hamilton, Kiki Hughes, Jeana Koeppen, Valerie Priko, Karen Thietje, and . Dawn Douglas. Many thanks to Marge Connell and Tillie Williams for their leadership with this troop. Even though the group had tb battle the elements they thoroughly enjoyed the cook- out of hot dogs, the watermelon treat from the Girl Scouts to the Brownies, and the graham cracker goodies created for the Girl Scouts by the Brownies at the Brownie fly-up picnic. A special thanks to the mothers who drove the girls to the event; Tillie Williams, Marge Connell, Cheri Hoglund, Connie Catanzaro, Colleen Priko, Mrs. Coburn, Mrs. Hjarpe, Mrs. Minter, Carol Campbell, and Mrs. Tomlinson. The Brownies would like to express their gratitude to Mi.;. Hjarpe for the lovely afternoon they spent at her home in Villa Vaupell on Tuesday. May 28. Mrs. Hjarpe invited the troop for treats at her residence to conclude the last troop meeting for this year. NEW LEADERSHIP REQUESTED The Brownie troop 409 will begin its new year in September. The troop will be losing its leaders and a plea for * volunteers is forthcoming. Mrs. Ayres will no longer be available for .these duties as the family is soon to be moving from the area. Mrs. Campbell has been carrying an overloaded activity schedule for quite some time and would like to retire. If anyone is interested in these activities please contact Carol Campbell at 385-4205. There t is an exceptionally large group of girls interested in the troop, so it would be a shame to lose the charter from lack of adult leadership. LAKE WATER TESTED One of the reasons the swimming lessons had been offered so late in the summer was fear that the lake water had been contaminated from the flooding Fox river. This past week the water has been tested and Griswold Lake has been given an excellent rating. Frequent checks will be made during the season to enable bathers the safest water standards possible. ATTEND HlltTIIDAY PARTY On Friday. June 7. my son. Kicky, attended a birthday party for Itpndy Vidas of Mcllenry. Randy is a fellow classmate at Edgebrook school. To celebrate his eleventh birthday Randy and his friends occupied their day swimming in the family pool. The soggy group could only be tempted to retreat from the pool with offers of delectable goodies from Mrs. Vidas' kitchen. Later in the evening our entire family joined the Lawrence Kottke family to help celebrate Sharon Kottke's birthday. We were all treated to homemade goodies prepared by Sharon's daughter, Laura. Others on hand to help Sharon celebrate were her parents, Elaine and Ray Herman, her brother, Matt, Sharon's in­ laws, Fred and Lillian Kottke, and Grandma Kottke. LITTLE LEAGUE STANDINGS Here are the Little League standings as of June 10. In first place with six wins and no losses is the L&M team, (will they continue to go on undefeated?) second place with a 4 win to 2 loss standing are the Braves (this team is reaUy improving with age), the third place slot is shared by the Carpet Discount team and the Island Lake Police Department team with 3 wins and 4 losses; and finally sharing fourth place with 2 wins and 4 losses are the J&L team and the Lions. These standings change with every Kame, so it's almost Jiiiyooc's race at this stage. There have been some outstanding plays by these youngsters in these games. C'ome on coaches, let's hear from you about your player's feats! I was informed that my son, Ricky, made a fantastic catch in left field for an out in their game (Lions vs Carpet Discount). Ken Hoff has five out of the park homeruns to his credit already. In Sunday's ganfe (June 9) between the Braves and Police, Jeff Wells of the Braves pitched a shut-out for the Braves with a 3-0 victory. FORM WOMEN'S SOFTBALL TEAM Several girls in our area are members of the McHenry Women's travelling softball team. Are they the "softies"? It appears just the opposite as they won their first game against the Woodstock II team last Thursday (June 6) with a 34-2 victory. Eileen Connell, Debbie Mahon and Denise Hughes are among the girls from this area. The league caters to women from age 15 years and up. The team will play teams from Harvard, Richmond, Cary,' Marengo, Algonquin, Huntley, Lake in the •Hills, and Woodstock I and II. Their next game will be on Tuesday night at Woodstock. MIXED COUPLE LEAGUE BANQUET After thirty-six weeks of bowling, the Friday Night Couples Mixed League from the bowlifig alley in Crystal Lake highlighted the season with ;» lMirif|iiot. 'Hie hnn<|iief w;is held in ElKiri. The' liowlers were lauded for their ade|>tncss and skill during the season. Among the awards received was a certificate to Marge Connell for the most improved average r 138 to 150; to Larry Kottke for second place for high game with handicap; Bonnie Kellen. received a high game trophy; the Marge and Jack Connell and Bob and Bonnie Kellen team placed fourth in overall standings. The league's officers for the '73-'74 season were John Bodnar - president; Carol Lynn • vice-president; Bob Kellen - secretary; and Mary Dierking - treasurer. The teams are already being farmed for '74-'75 Fall leagues. Jack Connell has been chosen secretary and Sharon Kottke treasurer for the new league. AGAINST ERA "Editor: "Unable to achieve ratification of the Equal Rights amendment by constitutional means, the ERA proponents have asked a Federal court to declare unconstitutional the section of the new Illinois Constitution which requires a three-fifths majority for ratification of a constitutional amendment. . The Court declined to do this and dismissed their case. However, Jhe ERA proponents have announced that they are going to bring a new case with the same objective. "The Illinois Constitution, Article XIII, Section 3, requires the Illinois Attorney General to take this oath of office: 'I do solemnly swear that I will support the Constitution of the United States, and the Constitution of the State of Illinois.' Unfortunately, in the case which was just dismissed, Attorney General William Scott did not "support the Constitution of the State of Tffinois," but permitted the • ERA proponents who brought lawsuit to make use of his Itten opinion which agrees ith their argument that the new Illinois Constitution is unconstitutional. In so doing, the Attorney General has ulted in his constitutional ity to the people of Illinois, who adopted this new Constitution only four years ago. "Until ERA came along, no challenge to this section of the Illinois Constitution had ever been made. This section was adopted unanimously by. the delegates to the Constitutional convention which drafted the Constitution. There is nothing in the U.S. Constitution or in any U.S. Supreme court decision which prohibits or questions the three-fifths majority rule. The U.S. Constitution itself requires a two-thirds majority in Congress for passage of a constitutional amendment. "Attorney General Scott opposed the litigation brought . by ERA proponents only on other grounds, namely, the three-fifths rule adopted by the Illinois House of Rep­ resentatives. But he did not dispute the ERA proponents' effort to invalidate a section of the new Illinois Constitution. "Probably the reason why Attorney General Scott is not fulfilling his constitutional duty to support the Illinois Constitution is that he has joined the organization called Men for ERA. We call on Attorney General Scott to absolve himself of this clear conflict of interest by resigning from Men For ERA, and causing his name to be removed from their letterhead. "We further call on Attorney General Scott to fulfill his constitutional duty by supporting the Illinois Constitution in any new suit which may be brought by the ERA proponents.
