Twice Told Tales FORTY YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of June 14, 1934) Miss Margaret Hitzel of Chicago was united in marriage to Mr. Edward Mertes of Pistakee Bay, June 9. The ceremony took place at St. Jardath's church, Chicago. James Jerouski, 40 years old of Arlington Heights; time keeper for the Chicago and North Western railroad, lost his life Sunday, when the boat in which he and his three children were rowing on Slocum Lake capsized. On Monday evening during the heavy rain and high wind, Miss Hazel Kramer had a narrow escape from injury in the storm. She and her mother were visiting at Woodlawn Parte and when the storm came up Miss Kramer went out to close the windows in the car and a huge hickory tree blew down across the car, crashing the top and breaking the windshield but left Miss Kramer uninjured. William R. Skidmore, wealthy Chicagoan who about eight months ago purchased the George Sayer farms, No. 1 and No. 5 at Pistakee Bay, has just recently completed a transaction in which he has become the owner of the Stock farm which adjoins his original property. This farm of 222 acres includes the Pistakee Bay golf course. Miss Dorothy Fisher and Miss Mildred Thompson of DeKalb received awards in the Women's Athletic association activities announced by the p h y s i c a l e d u c a t i o n department. The Empire theatre put on a special show Tuesday night of local talent. Miss Jean Huck popular tap dancer put on a speciality number and the Adams Brothers of Johnsburg put on musical numbers, featuring cowboy songs. TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO (Taken frrom the files of June 16, 1949) Mrs. Eleanor Foley is receiving congratualtions .of her friends this week on her appointment as assistant county superintendent of schools. Roy Kent was elected! chairman of the Red Cross in McHenry township at the annual election. He replaces Paul R. Yanda who resigned after efficiently holding the post for several years. Other officers are Ethel McGee, Robert L. Weber and Susan Olsen. Two McHenry men were included in the graduating class of the University of Illinois when 3,100 received degrees. The local graduates were Roy Gladstone, doctor of philosophy in educatin, and John E. Barthel, B.S. architectural engineering. After a highly successful year of leadership, Edward J. Frett was re-elected as Grand Knight of the McHenry Council Knights of Columbus. Mr. and Mrs. Howard Collins and children, Dick and Joan, returned Wednesday morning from a few days trip into Michigan. A crowd of 20,000 persons witnessed Harvard's biggest Milk Day, its eighth annual event. Many local entries brought home honors in the cattle show. One grand champion female in the black and white Holstein saw " L e e d o r a M a n - O - W a r Buckeye" of Hickory Creek farm not only receive the Harvard Milk Day trophy but also the Dean Milk Co. rotating trophy. A squad car for the county's sheriff's office was requested on Monday at the monthly meeting of the board of supervisors. The request was made by Math Schmidt of McHenry who said that he felt that the county should have a squad car on duty twenty-four hours a day with two deputies in order to keep proper police protection. TEN YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of June 18, 1964). Dean W. Paul, president of Gearmaster, Inc., announced Tuesday that his firm has just purchased five acres of property located two miles south of McHenry on Route 31. The firm plans to start construction in July. G e a r m a s t e r , I n c . , manufactures' small electric motors and generators. Friends and family honored Mr. and Mrs. George Johnson of Main street on their fiftieth wedding anniversary at an open house reception held at the McHenry Country club June 7. Mrs. Kathryn Freund, 77, widow of Math Freund, a farm equipment dealer in McHenry for many years, died April 16 at Holy Family hospital, DesPlaines. A son was born June 8 to Mr. and Mrs. Paul Seeber of Wonder Lake. Rev. George W. Martin, pastor at the McHenry community Methodist church until his transfer to Albany Park two years ago will soon assume new duties at Park Ridge. Donald Seaton of McHenry is among fifty-three high school teachers of mathematics on the University of Wyoming campus as participants in the summer institute of mathematics sponsored by the National Science foundation. Michael Hastings, 10 years old, suffered a fractured skull when he fell from his bike on Monday. _ The lower end of Blue Glacier, Mt.
