Is this a Veterans administration program? A - Vetreach is a program sponsored jointly by VA and ACTION, enlisting the use of Volunteers in Service to America (VISTA) members who are Vietnam-era veterans, to assist other veterans who, because of education or economic barriers, have failed to take advantage of VA benefits. Q - I bought my first home with a GI loan. I am now considering purchase of a new house. Must I obtain a release from the VA before negotiating for my new house? A - Veterans are cautioned to obtain a "release from liability" the seller (veteran) can be held financially liable should the purchaser default on mortgage payments. PLANNING FOR A LEARNING SUMMER Even good, conscientious parents need time away from their kids. In the summer with young children home all day, parents can come to feel tied down, especially if there's no money for camp or a vacation. It is possible to alleviate this problem, but first parents have to decide whether they'd rather complain "the kids drove us crazy" or whether they want to solve the problem. It takes some parent will power and some simple advance planning, planning that will pay off in saved time and tempers. A n " I n d e p e n d e n c e " Environment - If a child has to call his parent to get a glass of water or open his bedroom door, then both parent and child are too dependent on each other. Independence is both a state of mind and the actual resources to do something by oneself. A stool by the sink, a stack of paper cups, a hook placed lower on the door will save time and aggravation for everyone. Setting Summer Goals - This is the time to set some goals t o g e t h e r a b o u t accomplishments for the summer: one child may want to Q -- Will the Veterans a d m i n i s t r a t i o n p a y transportation costs to the place of burial for a veteran who died of a nonservice- connected disability in a private hospital? \ A - The VA is authorized to pay transportation costs to a burial site only when a veteran dies while being treated in a VA hospital, or while being treated at VA expense. spurgeon's Blanket Event! A child is far less likely to complain that he's bored if he's given responsibility for planning and doing things. Both in and out of school achievements depend on attitudes of independence, purpose and creative use of time. The Home Suggestion Box - Ask children for ideas on places to go, things to do. Clip news items , read posters. Discuss the suggestions: what can we' really do? how much will it cost? what supplies do we need? To add "dash" to activity, decorate a real box and check it every few days to see what new suggestions are inside. Future columns will contain some ideas that will pay off in school success as well as summer fun. Jerome Bellak Earns M.E. You will do the usual in town, visting very old buildings and centuries old cathedral with interesting figures over the doors and under 1 the gables. The unforgettable is a visit to the old Roman baths. It seems that because of floods and the fill-in of silt and mud, these baths became KIWANIS NEWS WONDER LAKE CLUB Election of new officers was held at the June 17 meeting. The fact is that a house was built on the ground above them. It was just by chance in attempting to dig a basement that they were discovered not too long ago. The main pool was quite like our high school pool in size and shape. There were several smaller pools in different rooms along the route of the water coming in and going out. The edges of the main pool were covered and high, round, ornamented stone columns held up the roof which provided a shaded walkway around the pool. The bottom of this great pool was entirely covered by thick sheets of lead. All of the water was warm. I believe it came from under ground hot springs. However, in one of the baths on the way out was an unique way of artificially heating the water with fire. Some of the water flowed through open troughs but in other cases it traveled through lead pipes. This intrigued me the most. Imagine lead pipes about 3 inches in diameter. They had a folded seam on top. The pipes were leaded together at the joints with a process that looked like our welding today. Imagine being able to do this without the aid of a Mow torch. I was deeply impressed with the skill, craftsmanship and knowledge of these first century Roman builders. The folks there told us they had cement that was superior to any we have today. They had baked bricks, many, many of them that were also superior to ours this day. Much knowledge has been lost, perhaps forever, and this is such a pity and such a waste.
