Diet Frauds And Fads Are Target Of Doctors Fat frauds, fads and fallacies are the target of Illinois physicians and public health officials who are concerned about the proliferation of programs and products which treat obesity without medical supervision. The Illinois State Medical society (ISMS) and Illinois Association of Osteopathic Physicians and Surgeons are considering proposal of legislation which would regulate clinics and other facilities offering weight- reduction programs. . "Few people think of obesity as a disease, but that's exactly what it is," said Dr. James C. Reid, Greenfield, chairman of- the ISMS Council on Social and Medical Services. "Disease is defined as an impairment of the normal performance of vital functions, and any fat person knows how true that definition is." "Obesity should be treated by only qualified physicians," Dr. Reid said. "Weight control clinics operated by unqualified persons are a very real threat to the health - and even the life - of consumers." In addition to consideration of legislation designed to drive quacks and fast-buck operators "eut of the obesity field, Dr. Reid's ISMS council has developed these guidelines to aid consumers in selection of weight-control programs or products: 1. Consult a physician to make sure the program or product is safe. Mo6t diet drugs, exercises and products are designed for people in good physical condition.
