Though the picnic was held in the garage, everyone managed to join the 'fun and played volleyball, badminton and horseshoes. Little Davie Gende enjoyed all the attention he received and had fun playing with all the little people who were at his home. Talk to the experts at CAREY Appliance General Electric (by Father Wm Hanner) If you didn't get to the 18th annual Country Aft Fair held in Parkland school last week, dear friend, you have goofed again. About seventy artists from the local area had examples of their work on exhibition. This is a BIG EVENT in McHenry. If you pride yourself on knowing what goes on in our area, of course you were there. You saw Robert Tucker's one- man show and took time to go over it with some care. It earned your attention and appreciation. Mr. Tucker's work was the subject of an article in the Plaindealer June 21. Many other artists were in the show. The work was in ceramics, oil, water color, acrylics, textiles inks, metals and other media. Photography was a new and appreciated show this year. Wayne Gaylord's thoughful work was shown. The pictures from McHenry County college showed interest and imagination. This is a field in which many can take part. You can take better pictures than many do. There is more to it than pointing a camera at a sun squinting face. The greater part of the work was done right here in our own county. It used local ideas and subjects. Work was often carefully done. For fifteen hears my wife and I had been members at the Chicago Art Institute. Time after time we went to disappointing shows. Things were "far out" and had small appeal. This is in no way true here in "grass roots art". This art was not forced. It used McHenry county, 111., and Mid- America in the main. There were few strike-outs. It was an enjoyable afternoon. Do you know there was even a children's section? Nothing pleases a child more than to have his efforts appreciated. This can lead to deeper interest and better work; not always, but often. Much of the art was for sale. One man said, "I sold seven pictures." Lots of pictures were marked SOLD. People must have enjoyed what they were willing to put out money for. Mark down for next year, Country Art Fair, it is something of our own and it is good. EIU HONOR STUDENT Sara L. Richards of McHenry was among the 872 Eastern Illinois university students at Charleston, 111., who received academic honors for the spring semester. A grade point average of between 3.75 and 4.0 is necessary for high honors and an average of between 3.50 and 3.74 for honors.
