Two young Girl Scouts show delight to be visited by Smoky, the Bear, during recent Day camp at the Harrison-Benwell conservation area in Wonder Lake. Smoky Visits Scout Camp About 150 Girl Scouts and their leaders were surprised to have Smoky, the Bear, visit their twilight cookout at the recent week-long day camp. Smoky dropped by to say hello to all the Scouts and to praise them for their work in helping to maintain the forests. Conservation is more than a word to Scouts and the girls demonstrated this fact by planting 900 trees furnished by the forest rangers while camping at the Harrison- Benwell Conservation area in Wonder Lake. A grove of Hickory trees was planted, another grove of wild cherry, and silver birch were started along the banks of the creek that flows through the property. All during Day camp, nature courses and hikes were given stressing the importance of preserving conservation are^s like those in McHenry county? When asked what was the most fun at Day camp the majority of Scouts agreed that cooking out-of-doors was Number one, but they also enjoyed getting their water from an old-fashion pump, playing games and singing songs, making things in crafts, meeting new friends and just having a fun time.
