"Now that the crops are planted, we want to remind farmers to come by the ASCS county office at their convenience to signup and certify - just as long as they do so by July 15," said Jimmie D. Lucas, executive director for the Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation Service in McHenry county. Lucas explained that the 1974 procedure is different from previous years when there was a signup period ahead of planting and a certification period after planting. Now a farmer makes only one signup- and-certification visit to the county office. Signup and certification are as important as ever to producers, Lucas said. He pointed out that the new agricultural law includes provisions for disaster payments to participants if their feed grain, or wheat crops are lost or the yield substantially reduced because of natural disaster. Also, as in • prior years, eligibility for support loans and payments is dependent on being in the program. Accuracy is also as important as ever in certifying crop acreage, Lucas said. Measurement service is available at cost from the ASCS county office for any program purpose for those who want to make use of it. "Remember, July 15 is the last day farmers can signup and certify their farm program participation," Lucas said. "We hope every eligible producer has visited or gotten in touch with the McHenry county ASCS office before then."
