(DON PEASLEY PHOTOGRAPHY) Complete Water Supply Study Two studies, one on desalting brackish groundwater and the other on artificial recharge of groundwater, have been completed by the Illinois State Water survey as part of a . comprehensive water-supply study of the metropolitan Chicago region. An earlier phase of this study showed that many parts of this six-county region (Cook, Du Page, Kane, Lake, McHenry and Will counties) will have water-supply deficits by 1990. Since the amount of Lake "Michigan water for domestic use is limited by a U.S. Supreme court decree, alternative sources for meeting predicted needs are being analyzed by the Water survey. One of these alternatives is the use of desalted water from a large and very deep water bearing formation called the Mt. Simon aquifer. The technical and economic feasibility of desalting this brackish water was investigated in detail. Although technically feasible, desalting was found to be a relatively expensive alternative, but might be practical if used as a supplement to a fresh groundwater supply. Artificially recharging groundwater with treated sewage effluents was another alternative studied. Laboratory studies showed that the deep sandstone formation in the area might be recharged successfully if a very high quality wastewater effluent was used. Procedures for the required backwashing, chlorination, and pH modification were developed in this study. Publications describing these two studies are now available free from the Illinois State Water Survey, Box 232, Urbana, 111. 61801. Barbara Krebs Writes Of New Life In Brazil The following letter, written by Barb Krebs, American Field Service student spending the year in Brazil, tells highlights of her experiences to date. Through the Plaindealer she will share them with classmates and friends in McHenry. "Being In Brazil over three months now, I've noticed so many cultural differences I'd like to share with my friends and community. naturally, the language cannot be learned overnight. And Portuguese is no exception! The grammar of this language is something else! It's much more complicated than English because of its vowel structure, vocabulary, and all these funny little rules they have, that don't mean a darn thing to me. At least I'm not having any trouble making myself understood now . . But notice that I said, ' now'! You should have heard me a month ago! Anyway, communication isn't so much a problem any more, as just having to learn all the forms of the verbs and correcting my grammatical errors. I find it so hard to remember the past tense forms of the verbs and because of this, I must sound ridiculous when I'm talking because I'm continually using the present tense! "As far as the food goes - it's terrific! Rice and beans are a must at every meal whether served plain or mixed in with the main dish. Since the growing season nere never ends, there's always a large variety of different fruits and vegetables available, and almost endless variety to be certain. I can't rave about the milk too much, but after three months, let's just say I'm used to it. The coffee's fabulous though, since the coffee's so strong here it's not drunk n !he same size cups as we have in the states. They're much Harvard, is accepting entries and fees until July 21, after which exhibitors' names will not be printed in the fair program. Even though the cups are smaller, believe it or not, they use more sugar to a cup of coffee than in the states. Sometimes I get confused as to whether they're putting sugar in their coffee or having coffee with their sugar! "School itself is a whole new way of life. The school I'm attending is an all girls' private, Catholic school with only about eighty to ninety students for every year. I had to choose the subject area I was interested in to determine which class I d T f'tinCM the humanities area, as I'd never studied psychology, sociology, etc., before, ana also, because I didn't want to find myself stuck taking physics! It's hard enough in English -- but in Portuguese? "Classes begin every morning at 7:30 a.m., and depending on the day of the week, I may get out at 10:20, or at noon. For six days every week (yes, including Saturdays) I'm in the same classroom with the" same students, which was one of the hardest things to get used to as I've had the modular scheduling for the past few years which is completely different. All the studying here must be done at home because they just don't have study halls. Since I'm only in school during the morning, naturally I have the rest of the day to do whatever studying must be done. All activities are done outside of the school (such as *ny kind of sports or handicrafts). The friends you have ttafo are from your class in school and then from your other activities done outside of school. "The only thing about school I don't think I'll ever get used to, is getting up at such an early hour. Since I have a half-hour walk to school every morning I have to leave the house by at least 7 to insure getting into the gate before it's locked. But I really shouldn't worry about not adapting to this, because it seems as if all the other students have the same probiem. Just about the time classes are being let out, everyone seems to just be getting over their morning Krebs. „ Santoe.SaoPaulo.Braw NAMED TO BOARD Virginia Williams, family nurse from McHenry, was recently elected to the board of directors of the Comprehensive Health Planning agency for McHenry county.
