r Children's Bookshelf NEW BOOKS THE YEAH OF THE BADGER By Molly Burkett No one thought the pathetic infant badger would survive. When the Burketts first saw it, it was about six weeks old| barely 8 inches long, and sparsely covered with black and white guard hairs Its nuzzle was still blunt and pink and soft, revealing that it was still relying on its mother's milk. Getting it to swallow from a dropper was a major undertaking Forlorn and mud caked, it lay whimpering in its box. The Burkett family wondered if it might not be more merciful to put it out of its misery. '• Love and patient care effected a near miracle in the shape of a healthy, bounding, mischievous and wholly lovable animal who shared the Burketts' home for one rewarding, if at times difficult, year. This true account of what it was like to have Nikki trundling around the house, whipping laces out of the shoes of unsuspecting visitors, prying open the refrigerator door, or snoring comfortably in the Ph. 815-678-4098 Closed Mondays Gasthaus Lorelei SERVING YOU THE FINEST GERMAN AND AMERICAN FOOD. ROLLING DOWNHILL By Ruth Carroll Everything was quiet on the porch of the little house in the great Smoky mountains until the cat knocked over the sewing basket (right onto the dog's head) and out rolled a fat ball of yarn. Off they ran chasing, catching, playing with it until they were all tangled up and rolling downhill. That's when the surprises started. Greene Isabelle and her best friend, Herbie, were all set to fight again after school ("O.K.," said Herbie, "but no fair using feet"), when Isabelle clapped her hand to her forehead. "I can't fight today. My mother's taking me to the doc tor's for a check-up. She wants to ask him what makes me so itchy. <She says she might have a nervous breakdown if 1 don't stop being such an itch." Isabelle's tremendous energy was driving her parents crazy, but at least Isabelle could cope with people like Mary Eliza, who had an unpleasant way of linking her arm in yours and then asking, "What's the capital of West Virginia?" or Chauncey Lapidus, who ran past Isabelle shouting, "Izzy, Izzy is a bear, in her flowered underwear!" (In the first grade, she's shown the mole on her stomach to the class for Show and Tell, and she'd had on f l o w e r e d u n d e r p a n t s . Chauncey had never forgotten.) Isabelle could fight back all right, and she used a lot of energy doing just that. But what she really wanted was to take over her big brother s paper route--and to win the fifty-yard dash at school She got her chance at the paper route one week, and that was how she met Mrs. Stern, an elderly lady who liked to paint the rooms of her house different colors to cheer herself up. And she got her chance at the fifty- yard dash, too. But the best part came when Isabelle realized, with the help of Mrs. Stem and a new girl in her class named Jane Malone, that if she channeled her energy, she could scale mountains. I«I4 1 THE WINGEDCOLT OF CAS A MIA By Betsy Byars We stood at the railroad station and looked across the tracks at each other He was a boy in a dark suit with his hair combed down flat He was holding a Mad magazine I was a man in dusty boots and dusty pants with a scar down the side of my face that no amount of dust could hide. When Uncle Coot met Charles that day at the station, you could tell they were going to have a hard time hitting it off. Charles was a serious, bookish kid, whose mother had left him pretty much on his own in boarding schools and had farmed him out to his uncle for that summer Uncle Coot was tired and bitter, a farmer movie stunt man who had made hundreds of spectacular leaps and falls--until the day he accidentally killed the best stunt horse he ever had Charles and Uncle Coot had nothing in common but their mutual distrust They might have continued that way for a long time, maybe forever Then Mrs. Minney, Uncle Coot's eccentric neighbor , drove up in her truck The mare she had bought from Uncle Coot had foaled The colt had wings. Uncle Coot couldn't believe it, even after he saw it for himself. Charles was ecstatic. They took the colt home and cared for it, but when it was lost during one of the fierce Texas electrical storms, the tension .Stretelling Your Dollars SIDEWALK SXCEf -- H wfP • Saturday & Sunday - ONLY McHENRY STORE ONLY Our R*g. 2.81 and 4.34 All Jr. boy«, boy* and man's frayad lag (Danim |aans) at '/> prlca, whlla thay last.
