(DON PEASLEY PHOTOGRAPHY) Thirteen beauties start the quest for recognition and a chance to compete in the Miss Illinois County Fair contest when they go before the judges in the Miss McHenry County 1974 pageant for preliminary evaluation this week. The preliminary contest is an ijmportant part of the total fudging because it provides the Judges and the thirteen ^candidates a chance to get acquainted and to make first impressions, said Don Peasley, coordinator for this twenty-first annual beauty pageant which is presented as a feature of the McHenry County Fair each year. Finals for the Miss McHenry County contest are Wednesday night, July 31, before the grandstand audience on the opening day of the McHenry County Fair in Woodstock. At the preliminaries, members of the press, committee members, fair board officers and sponsor representatives of the respective candidates are in attendance. The candidates will appear both in formals and swim suits, a similar procedure to be followed on July 31 before the grandstand audience. Blondes, brunettes and redheads are in this annual pageantry which is being staged by Mrs. Lyle Kleckner and Mrs. William Nye along with a committtee representing many of the communities participating in this contest. The candidates have chosen their order of appearance before the judges, and a main event Thursday night will be personal interviews. Local candidates are the following: Bonita Berndt, 18, Miss Wonder Lake, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Joe Novak, sponsored by Woman's club of Wonder Lake; Donna Humann, 18, Miss McHenry, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Donald Humann, sponsored by McHenry American Legion; Kathie Pohlman, 17, Miss Island Lake, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Pohlman, sponsored by Woodstock Moose lodge; Linda Tanouye, 18, Miss Richmond, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jerry Tanouye, sponsored by Richmond-Burton Jaycees. "Acupuncture Is Subject Of PWP Meeting Acupuncture. What is it? Parents Without Partners, Chapter 189, will have the opportunity to increase knowledge of the subject at the next general meeting Friday evening, July 19, at 8:30 p.m. An area physician will be the guest lecturer and present an informative program on this traditional practice of Chinese folk medicine. A question and answer period will follow. The meeting will be held at the American Legion ciubhouse on the corner of Oak and Woodstock streets in Crystal Lake. All members are urged to attend. Retiring from the board are Clyde Blackwell of McHenry and Mrs. Alice Weber of Spring Grove. Several new jnembers joined the society during the annual meeting and initial opening of the museum in May. Recent donations added to the over 7,000 artifacts, are a workable Edison phonograph with large horn donated by Mrs Virginia Knutson of Crystal" Lake and an antique vacuum cleaner and clothing from Isabel Litzenburger in Woodstock The Museum is particularly V interested in obtaining a complete file of high school yearbooks from throughout the*- county. Several have recently been donated from Crystal Lake, and it is hoped that everyone will search their bookshelves and bring them to the Museum. Maybe attics will need to be searched for older years. At the June board meeting, approval was given to repair part of the roof and to completely replace the roof over the exhibit hall (gymnasium), all of which is expense not previously a n t i c i p a t e d . F u r t h e r renovation plans include the second floor rooms, but all of this n^feds the continual funding and support of county residents. Contributions to the McHenry County Historical society, both cash and appraised articles, are tax deductible. However at present, legislation has been proposed in the U.S.. Congress which would do away with tax deductions to charitable and not-for-profit corporations. The public is urged to write their congressmen to oppose Senate Bill 3647 and House Bill 636. Volunteer workers continue to be needed to help sort, mend and classify books, newspapers , and clippings. The same type of help is needed for the many dresses and other garments which up to now have not been able to be properly displayed. centennial Celebration the "Smile chapter entered a float in the parade held Friday evening, July 5. An overabundance of effort went into its production which carried the following theme: "Education and Recreation Leading Our Children to Commerce and Industry in the Future." State Education committee, will be a speaker for the McHenry county chapter of the National Organization for Women July 18. Ms. Reynolds will share facts and possible solutions concerning sexism in the schools. Her own slide presentation, "An Overview on Sexism," and another titled "Dick and Jane as Victims," will be shown and discussed. A second speaker, Charlene Caster, was instrumental in gaining equal sports facilities and budget for girls in Elgin School District U-46. Ms. Gaster will relate her experiences in effecting those changes. V '1 Bargain Sale This Week Aids Stray Animals Summer bargains galore for the entire family at genuine bargain prices will be found at the Helping Paws Animal Welfare association rummage sale, beginning Wednesday evening, July 17, at 6:30 p.m. The sale is being held in the barn at 4515 Valley View road, Crystal Lake (1V2 miles east of the intersection of routes 31 and 176, just north of route 176 on Valley View road), and will run from Wednesday evening through Saturday noon. Hours on Thursday and Friday, July 18 and 19, will be 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., and on Saturday July 20, from 9 a.m. to noon. Featured at the sale will be a large variety of clothing for all ages and sizes, pots and pans, dishes, toys, books, jewelry, bric-a-brac, and much miscellaneous.
